HiJolly Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Welcome to the site! I have heard it said that Buddhists do not believe in "God". But when I read various Buddhist writings, I get the feeling that this is not entirely true, depending somewhat on the definition of "God". As you might know, Mormonism has a fairly unique definition of "God". So in your opinion, is there a "God", in Buddhism? HiJolly Quote

HiJollythank you for your warm greeting and question! you have hit on a hotly disputed point in buddhism. generally speaking, buddhists do not believe in a god in the traditional christian/muslim/jewish way (triune or otherwise). for me, it is an emistemological rather than ontological matter. HiJolly Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 thank you for your warm greeting and question! you have hit on a hotly disputed point in buddhism. generally speaking, buddhists do not believe in a god in the traditional christian/muslim/jewish way (triune or otherwise). for me, it is an emistemological rather than ontological matter.Indeed. That is because I study most religions/faith traditions, as I come across them. As a Mormon mystic, I have found my counterpart in Buddhism and we definitely agree that there is a 'God' -- by whatever definition -- usually defined by our own personal experiences. It is the same in all religions, for the most part, in my experience. I have done the same with my 'mystical' friends in Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Taoism, etc. BTW, Did you mean to say "epistemelogical"? HiJolly Quote
bodhigirlsmiles Posted October 25, 2008 Author Report Posted October 25, 2008 BTW, Did you mean to say "epistemelogical"? HiJolly yes i did....it is always hard to type early in the morning. although....the "m" adds a lovely hint to the mystic that you described. perhaps, today, i have created a new word :) Quote

lindsayjane Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Welcome. It is a treat to have you here. I have often felt that if I were not LDS I would be Buddhist. I have studied much of Buddhist philosophy and practice with reverence and admiration. I believe the path of Buddhism to be mindful, peaceful, and enlightened. His Holiness the Dalai Lama continues to be one of my very favorite people. I have always been inspired and uplifted as I've read his remarkable words. I wish you peace and enlightenment on your path, as well! Quote
