Gatsby Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 Are there any LDS, Mormon stand up comedians? I'm a big fan of stand up comedy. Some of my all time favorite comedians include Chris Rock, Katt Williams, George Lopez, Carlos Mencia,.... but I'm interested in knowing if they are any LDS comedians. I always enjoy a good laugh. Dravin Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 Look up "Latter-Day Night Live'. Some people find it hilarious, me I only really liked a couple of sequences. Quote
Jbs2763 Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 bengt washburn is...parts of his act are about being mormon, even tho he isn't exaclty active currenlty Quote
aruth5000 Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 John Bytheway has done some good ones Quote
Lost_one Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 John Bytheway has done some good onesAfter reading this post, i went on youtube and watched, Standards with John Bytheway. That was very powerful. I really felt the spirit as well as getting a few laughs. It was great. Why have i never heard of this guy before? Quote
Jenamarie Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I was going to say John Bytheway. I love the songs he writes, like the story of Lehi and his family set to the tune to Gilligan's Island. I still can't believe that one hasn't made it into the Primary Songbook. Quote
aruth5000 Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 My young women leaders at my old ward were actually the ones that introduced me to John Bytheway he has some great stuff Quote
skippy740 Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Bill Cosby has some good wholesome stuff too. Quote
daenvgiell Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Well I would have said John Bytheway, but there are few people that have beaten me to it, my young womens leader introduced to him, I think I listened to the survival guide for teens, or crash course, I dont know now it was a few years ago, but I really enjoyed it! Jbs2763 Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Brian Regan is a totaly PG comic, and hilarious...not LDS tho but safe for the kiddies Quote
Kawazu Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 (edited) Hi,Has anyone heard of Elna Baker? She has a book coming out called The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance. Some while ago, she contributed to an episode of NPR's This American Life, (Act III of the radio program, about working at a toy store.) Full episode streamed online here, for free.Website: Elnabaker.comYouTube Video: (minor advisory -- non-explicit, but acknowledges the existence of sex.)Thanks for the other recommendations, guys. I'll check them out.Have a great day.Regards,Kawazu Edited March 16, 2009 by Kawazu Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I had never heard of John Bytheway until he came to visit our Stake. He gave a talk which was both spiritully uplifting and hilarious. My daughters have been fans ever since. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 I've seen some Elna Baker on YouTube. Very engaging stage presence, but her "innocent-Mormon-girl-lost-in-big-bad-New-York" shtick becomes thoroughly unpersuasive (and therefore unamusing) if you listen to her long enough. Quote

Then again, I've only heard the NPR clip and the bit in the YouTube video. Does she have a CD or any other good material?Cheers,Kawazu Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 Does she have a CD or any other good material? Not sure. Her website doesn't say? Quote
Kawazu Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 Nope. Just the upcoming book, YouTube clip, and some radio show appearances. Some short stories are also posted, gratis. I thought you might have seen more of her act than the free Internet stuff. Some comedians are only funny for the first 10 minutes... Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 Yeah; when I said "long enough" I should have specified "approximately four minutes". Quote
Kawazu Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 Yeah; when I said "long enough" I should have specified "approximately four minutes". Haha. :) Fair enough. I still thought the "Rejection Show" YouTube video was funny enough to circulate on my Myspace bulletin and amongst my non-church e-mail contacts. It's hard to find LDS-themed comedy that a person could pass along to others. Quote
