I went yesterday for an interview for a Temple Recomend and a Patriarchal Blessing. The interview went really well and we set up an appointment for two weeks to do the actual interview. Is there anything that I should take with me for the interview? How long does it usually take? I know the blessing he'll ask me some question then fill out a blessing recomend then I go to another guy for the actual blessing. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

For a Patriarchal Blessing, I would recommend to fast and pray one day prior to the actual blessing. Live as if you were a missionary. This means, no TV, music that does not uplift the soul, scripture reading, pray throughout the day in asking the Lord to open the mind and allow His voice to be the Patriarch, and keep the thoughts clear and clean. What this may do for you, it will prepare your soul to be more recipient for this wonderful blessing. I also recommend, you bring a person with you.

You are not allowed any recorder device or writing paper to record the event as it unfolds for you. Having another person in the same room, may aid you later to capture what was stated. You may hear specific revelations pertaining to you and may not be recorded for a wise purpose. The Patriarch is the only person who will record the blessing and later, depending on your area (time wise), will mail you a transcript.

The Patriarch in most cases, will interview in noting your personal desires before the Lord. So I will say, have a mental list that you may present to either the Lord or the Patriarch. In my case, I did test the Patriarch to see whether it was the Lord or him in presenting the blessing. Stupidity on my behalf in testing the Lord, the few I held back, was answered by the Patriarch. So again, just state your desire before the Lord.

Regards to a Temple Recommend, when you are interviewed by a member of the Stake Presidency, be yourself and look the presidency member in the eye at all times. I do this to see who fitches first.

God bless and good luck on your blessing.

What? My wife's grandpa was a patriarch and he recorded his blessings and had his wife type them up so the recipient could get a copy. How do others get a copy of their blessing if it wasn't recorded?

I just received my Patriarchal Blessing yesterday (June 19th). You are allowed to bring your spouse/fiance, or a limited number of very close family members with you to your blessing. No recording devices other than those used by the Patriarch and his wife in order to transcribe the blessing, check between any errors, clarify somethings that the Patriarch had in mind but was unable to verbalize at the time, etc.

The patriarch may receive inspiration after the actual blessing is done, when he is transcribing the recording to make the printed text copy. That's one of the reasons they don't want you recording it on your own equipment. The process isn't done until the patriarch "publishes" it. Inspiration can come to him at any time during the process. He may also change redundant wording, correct his own grammar, etc. I've also heard patriarchs say that they've added entire paragraphs after the fact. That's rare, but it can occur.

It's not spiritual "dictation" but it's the patriarch interpreting the impressions that come to him according to his ability to express them.

To prepare for your blessing, fasting and prayer is a good idea. Don't go in trying to "tempt the Lord" by asking for something you ought not. Your faith is expressed by going to the Lord's servant (the patriarch) for the blessing. You don't go to him trying to get "proof" that your faith is well-placed.

What to expect from the patriarch. He'll chat with you briefly, just to get to know you on a personal level. He may discuss your goals, your concerns, your ambitions, etc. During the blessing, the primary objective is for him to declare your lineage. All saved persons on earth belong to one of the twelve tribes of Israel, either by blood or adoption. Peter, James, John, and the other apostles had it given to them by the Lord to exercise judgment over the tribes of Israel. Thus, if you want to be found worthy of exaltation, you need to have a place among the Lord's chosen people, the seed of Abraham.

Beyond that declaration of lineage, the patriarch may give expressions of admonition, warning, encouragement, and direction for your life. He may identify spiritual gifts that the Lord has given you that you may not know you possess. The entire period of your "mortal probation" is covered by the blessing. That time goes up to the moment you will be resurrected.

Receiving a patriarchal blessing is a privilege given to those who are worthy members of the Lord's earthly kingdom. It is a wonderful thing to have a personal revelation given to a patriarch in your behalf to guide you through your mortal mission.

Best wishes. I hope you have a wonderful experience!

That is wonderful you are going to get your Patriarchal Blessing, it can hold such value.

I actually received my patriarchal blessing a couple of months ago, and it was one of the most spiritual experiences I've ever had. The feeling I had is beyond discription and different than the feeling of the Holy Ghost. I know it was truely our Father in Heaven and I wish that I could have felt that way forever.

One other interesting thing...our Patriarch records the blessing with two seperate recorders-just in case one doesn't work, but when he finished, neither one had recorded-the buttons were pressed, but nothing was on the tapes. He said that we could either brainstorm and try to remember the details or he could give me another blessing. He chose to give it again. It was equally beautiful and surprisingly similar to the first one-sometimes the wording was slightly different, but the meaning was the same. Which was astounding b/c it was a long blessing and I dont think he could have possibly remembered everything.

So please know, that it is to you He is communicating, what an incredible experience you are going to have.

I don't really have much advice on this. I went when I was pretty young. My father took one of my brothers and me to get ours the same day. I remember the patriarch was fairly tall and weighed at least 600 pounds while his wife was extremely skinny and only around 4 feet tall. It was the oddest thing. He brought me and my father into a room and asked me some questions which my dad pretty much answered before I had a chance to respond. You don't really have to do much of anything except answer what ever questions he has to get an idea of what you're like and sit there the same as you would with any blessing. My blessing lasted several minutes. If you'd like to read mine to get a feel for what they're like, I could email it to you. Other than that, you really don't have anything to worry about. I hope it goes well for you.

That sounds much better than the one I had. I just felt like the patriarch was repeating the things my father told him. I've heard of patriarchal blessings that are given in much detail but I haven't seen any personally. It sounds like yours was pretty nice.

Mliff, I still have my proof copy given to me by my beloved Hawaiian Patriarch from 32-years ago. Back then, they used typewriters and took over month to two months before you received a copy. I will always treasure this moment and this simple piece of paper that has guided my life since then.
