Salmonella Sickened Grandma... A Call to Legislation??

Peripherally related to yesterday's thread, "Retired Generals say - Kids Not Fit to Fight", for which I levied a comment; we have another article today on MSNBC enticing us to enact further legislation around food.

Salmonella-sickened grandma pleads for food safety

It appears that our buddy Rupert is keen on expanding the role of government in our dietary lives. We've got the attack coming on two fronts... on one end, we've got the fear tactic of "National Security" as in the Retired Generals article yesterday... and on the other end, if that doesn't get you, then we'll use your sick grandma to pull at your heart strings.

Despicable. Obvious. Blatant. The sprint to socialism continues on... and in fact the pace appears to be quickening. We know that it is all going to get so much worse before it gets any better and articles like these are painfully obvious to me. But I am just as sure there are many who will read these articles and say to themselves, "Yes! Please help us Congress! Please help us FDA! We cannot bear to take personal responsibility for our own actions anymore... we need you to save us from ourselves!" And then write their congressman and beg them to take action.

I for one will be writing mine and telling him/her to leave my food alone... I can take care of myself and my kids quite well on my own, thank you very much.

Such a law might have avoided the severe infection that struck Lobato, who fell sick after eating an unusual appetizer on July 10 at The Fort restaurant in Morrison, Colo. Until the outbreak, the upscale restaurant specialized in “rattlesnake cakes,” patties of cooked rattlesnake meat similar to crab cakes, topped with an avocado relish, cilantro greens and a chile aoli sauce.

Are you sure it was salmonella that made her sick?

Federal laws insuring good safe farms/food factories are bad?

Huh. My grandma told me that you just don't eat raw eggs.

Indeed. In fact most menus I've seen for places that serve undercooked or uncooked meat and eggs will have a nice little warning that eating such things increases your chance of contracting an illborne illness.

The above (what I said, not you HG) said I'd need a better understanding of what the current laws and situation is to know whether I think increased inspections and stricter conditions is called for. No need to add laws if the conditions cited were already in violation of the laws (though better enforcement may be called for). Else you end up in a situation where having already violated 3 standards a 4th isn't going to stop them.

I don't see what's wrong with having food safety laws, especially when it comes to the conditions of farms. I'm even willing to pay a little extra to ensure that the eggs or meat came from farms that ensured they were safe. If that makes me a bleeding heart liberal socialist animal hugger food snob, then so be it. There's also something called common sense, which means that if you really want to be safe, then you wouldn't eat something with raw or undercooked eggs in it. The only PETA I belong to is People Enjoying Tasty Animals.

Who does that Grandma think she is wanting to bring down the full weight of a socialistic state on our heads just for a little clean food? Why does she not have her Pâté de foie gras flown in from one of those socialistic European countries if she is sooo picky???!!!
