This is for a High Priest age group of adults (empty nesters)

Any and all suggestions are appreicated. I'm hoping to find something that is scripture oriented and not just a discussion on a Conference Talk from the last issue.

thank you in advance.

The atonement of Christ, faith, obedience, missionary work, temple work.

OOOohhhh, that's a heavy one. But if done right should put Christ's mission into perspective. Look up talks by Robert J. Matthews (past BYU prof. & scholar, he died in 2009). He gave a few speeches titled "Resurrection, The Ultimate Triumph" and also "The Spirit World and the Resurrection of the Dead" along with "The Established Order of the Kingdom of God" and also "Why a Savior is Necessary, and Why Only Jesus Christ Could Qualify" that may be on point of what you're looking for.

I'm sure there are others, but give those a shot. Also, stay away from Cleon and Eric Skousen. It's a bit off the deep end for group discussion.

Added one more, because I'm compulsive that way.

wow... thank you bunches.

The book that got me thinking of this subject is "Infinite Atonement" by Tad Callister.

For me, the author waxes into floral proses so often, it's almost like it's there as a filler. It was a difficult read.

Mediation and Atonement by John Taylor is pretty good. One of the points that I remember is that the Atonement bridges God and man in more ways than typically thought. Specifically, the Priesthood is the Power of God given to man. Without the Atonement, man cannot have that power. Further, the Atonement lifts us into communion with the Godhead. He pretty much says we enter into unity with them.

On the subject of the Atonement, there can be good study on why you and I would be devils and angels to the devil if there were no Atonement.

You could also play a bit of a game where you look for teachings and principles of the Atonement in the OT by looking for the word "covering/cover" (which is the same as "atonement").

Thank you... we've sort of done those.

What do you think of "what if the Atonement didn't happen?"

that would be a good question for under talking about the atonement, i don't think that would be good for a main topic.

Things like this remind me of BYs comment (paraphrased)- we won't get more revelation on the deeper principles of the gospel until we can learn to keep and understand the basic ones.

I generally like the KISS rule-

Keep It Simple, Stupid.

one thing you may want to do is open the class by asking if anyone had questions about anything or had any spiritual experiences they want to share.

I was actually going to suggest Cleon's A Personal Search for the Meaning of the Atonement, :D. Although it could be waaaay too much if one doesn't keep the discussion limited. And if the spiritual maturity of the quorum isn't up to par it would fall short.

I'm studying that talk right now, though, so it's on my brain.

Apple, you could also delve into the events of the end times and warn against apathy.

That is what I was thinking would be way too much for a FHE or any lesson. It's more for personal edification and study.

I skipped from Chapter 7 to the Chapter 26. :o

The reason I thought of this subject for the discussion at FHE is that I got stuck on Chapter 7, which is about what would happen if there wasn't an atonement. The people in this FHE group are all HP age (one used to be a bishop, one his counselor, one is a very knowledgeable convert, and the other is currently HP group leader and that's just the priesthood holders, the sisters have the same level of gospel knowledge). This is a very knowlegeable group of people.

Keeping it too simple with this particular group sometimes just leads to pretty heavy discussions anyway :)

I love Skousen's A Personal Search for the Meaning of the Atonement.

I've been actively studying the atonement for several years. Every time its our turn to give the FHE lesson in our home I seem to be doing the Atonement...again. :) I decided that's ok, because its the foundation of all we believe.

Sweet! Can I have a gold star or rare smiley?

Let us know what you decided on once you've got a lesson plan ready. I'd be interested in it.

:lookaround: Looking around for a gold star.

I'll let you know how it turns out. :)

FHE went well. We have a really good group.

What I finally did was open Tad Callister's book and read parts of Chapter 7. Then gave the scripture references and asked questions. We ended up with a great 30 minute discussion. One of the couples in the group teach the Gospel Principles class and had just given the lesson on the topic of "What if there was no Atonement?"

I should really quit stressing with this group of wonderful people. They always pick up where I fail.

Thanks again everyone. This helped me clarify my thoughts.
