searchingfortruth Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Hey everyone! I come in peace! lol Half my family is mormon. other half has a background in freemasonry. I believe in God, Jesus, the holy spirit, and the bible. My lds family has been "witnessing" to me about LDS church. I stumbled upon here...and figured I sign up and see if I learn anything! Feel free to say anything to me! I'm open-minded, and will listen to anyone's side of the story! Quote
Rhi_Bran_y_Hud Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 say anything? ... I'm not a Mormon, and I really don't know much about Free-masonry. I've heard it said that there are a lot of elements of Free-masonry within LDS ceremonies, but I don't know if there's any validity to that. I don't think a Mormon would say there is, and out of respect I really have no desire to know for sure, because the ceremonies they do in the Temple are very private and sacred to them. However, from what I do know of both, I think you will find the same common denominators: there advancement of same kind, climbing a ladder to get closer to God, or even becoming a god, and/or attaining enlightenment. You may also find a degree of universalism common to both (the idea that basically everyone gets "saved" in the end). In other words, if you were a website, I think you might change "skins" and even a lot of content, but not much actual substance if you were to switch between the two. At least that's the opinion of an outsider (an evangelical I guess you could say). Option #3 can be found in Luke 15:11-32. Is this about joining a club? Pursuing your own spirituality? Quote
Gwen Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 according to your profile you are a stones throw from the temple. we're neighbors..... sorta... thinking globally we are. lol welcome. Quote

questioning_seeker Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 I'm guessing that if you're looking for answers, at some point you'll ask a question? Quote
Gwen Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 i can't think of anything wrong with dothan, always had a blast at their ysa conferences. met my husband at one. :) Quote
HiJolly Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Though I'm no world-class scholar, I know quite a lot about freemasonry & the LDS church. I'll try to keep my eye out for any questions you may have. One thing is that the masonic effects on the LDS are mostly/completely contained within the Temple setting (it is the LDS's 'mystery school') so a lot of discussion concerning specifics might be difficult to speak of publicly here. So send me a PM if you have particular Q's. Welcome to the site! HiJolly Quote
HiJolly Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Or we could do it publicly and move to PM only if Pam objects - but many LDS differ in their level of what is considered OK to discuss and what is not. BTW, you probably know but Truth is a terrible (as in, fierce) master -- yet only devotion to Truth will lead to the mysteries of God. :-) HiJolly Quote

rex8499 Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 I definitely don't think we could get into the specifics of the similarities and differences between the Free Mason's ceremonies and those in the temple without violating the covenants we made to keep the temple ceremonies to ourselves except while in the temple. But that said, after my first endowment session in the temple, I went online and searched for some free-mason ceremonies that were supposedly similar. I did find one that had some minor similarities, but they definitely weren't the same and did not give me the impression that JS just copied them. During my first temple interview with the stake president he talked about how there may well indeed be some similarities and perhaps they stem from fragments of truth that were still known when free-masonry was established. Seems like the beginnings of it are very unclear. Quote
