Backroads Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Climate was brought up as a reason for immodesty.Immodest by whose standards?Such-n-such people set up a civilization. In order to survive and thrive, the people had to work with the surrounding environment: What was available to eat? Feasible to hunt? Feasible to grow? What textiles were available with which to make clothing? What clothing was necessary to make practical hunting/farming/ceremony/life/etc?We mentioned the Middle East. The dry heat made long billowing (and as a result body-covering outfits) the most comfortable and practical. Other cultures, that wouldn't work as well.I don't think very many cultures based their common everyday outfits solely on sex appeal. I don't think many of them had modesty/immodesty at the front of the brain.

Jennarator Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Church standards on modesty. Church culture. I never said that other culture think it is sexy to not wear much. In fact if you read all of my posts, I say that we should be tolerant of others. My point is, those that know better, should dress accourdingly.
Jennarator Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 · Hidden Hidden And there's the irony... For a burqa-wearing muslim, Jennarator is immodest! Hah!REALLY?!?! When did I say THAT!?!?! This is a JOKE! You are putting words in my mouth and taking things out of context. I am so much less of a prude than you are insinuating and this is a personal attach!!!!!! All I am stating is church standards. HA!
Jennarator Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 And there's the irony... For a burqa-wearing muslim, Jennarator is immodest! Hah!This is just rude and a personal attach.
Guest Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 This is just rude and a personal attach. How so? Read it again. I have a feeling you're letting your emotions get the better of your understanding of my sentences.
Dravin Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 (edited) This is just rude and a personal attach. No it's not. She's pointing out that what is modest varies per culture, and that just as you are looking at different cultures and calling them immodest other cultures can look at you and call you immodest. That said I can't help but think there is still some significant talking past each other going on. Maybe it might be helpful if everyone stated their position in a bubble (in isolation from the OP and other posts and positions already stated). I think the positions have been contaminated, so to speak, where it's hard to know exactly what everyone is trying to say because it's being filtered through the lens of the entire thread.Edit: For instance, at some point it seemed like lava-lava's were considered a modesty/obedience issue. I don't think anyone was actually making that claim (I may have missed it), it was just an outgrowth of other comments and interpretations. Edited May 9, 2011 by Dravin
Jennarator Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 (edited) The "Hah!" is rude and a personal attach. Now, let me get back to adjusting the AC, my floor length skirt, bonnet and long sleves are making me hot. Edited May 9, 2011 by Jennarator
Guest Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 (edited) Church standards on modesty. Church culture. And that's what we're trying to discuss with you... which you keep on bringing up "wanting to defy the GA's" about!MODESTY:- having or showing regard for the decencies of behavior, speech, dress, etc.; decent: a modest neckline on a dress. A person wearing thin strap sundress does not break that "decency of behavior or dress". We don't wear sleeves because we think thisis immodest. We wear sleeves to hide garments. Dravin Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 The "Hah!" is rude and a personal attach.Once again, not really. It's an exclamation that she's managed to corner you rhetorically speaking.
Guest Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 The "Hah!" is rude and a personal attach.Since WHEN???Granted English is only my 3rd language, but I did study it for years!
Jennarator Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 “Immodest clothing includes short shorts and skirts, tight clothing, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and other revealing attire. Young women should wear clothing that covers the shoulder and avoid clothing that is low-cut in the front or the back or revealing in any other manner. Young men should also maintain modesty in their appearance. All should avoid extremes in clothing, appearance, and hairstyle. Always be neat and clean and avoid being sloppy or inappropriately casual in dress, grooming, and manners. Ask yourself, ‘Would I feel comfortable with my appearance if I were in the Lord’s presence?’” For the Strength of Youth (pamphlet, 2001), 14–16.

Wingnut Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 The "Hah!" is rude and a personal attach [sic].It may be rude, though I doubt that was the intent, but it's not an attack.
Wingnut Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 First of all, oh please. Second of all, in all your self-righteousness, perhaps you didn't notice that bare shoulders aren't actually listed in the first sentence, which includes specific examples of immodesty. It is added separately. Semantics? Probably. But that's pretty much what this thread has devolved into.
Dravin Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Anatess's example dress covers the shoulder, what it doesn't cover is the upper arm which, if the model was to wear temple garments, would need to be covered.
