I'm new to the church and have much to learn. My husband was previously married in the Temple. What does this mean as it applies to him and I now? Our Bishop has been talking about sealing. Yet, my husband is still sealed to his exwife and has a son.

Your bishop can help. Your husband will need to get a clearance to be sealed to you. This goes thru your bishop and to the First Presidency. It is a process, I am currecntly going thru. But it will be worth it! :)

Sometimes, a temple sealing may be cancelled. You should ask your husband if his was. If this is the case, it is like the sealing to his previous wife never happened. In that case also, who the son is sealed to would depend... If the ex agrees to it, the son could be sealed to you and it is as if he is yours. Or, if his ex gets married to someone else and it is okay with your husband, the son is sealed to her and her new husband and it is as if your husband never had a son. Make sense?

Now, if it was not cancelled, you can still be sealed to him, as can your children should you have any. You would be considered his "second wife", and in eternity he would be able to decide which sealing he wanted to honor. He could do one, the other, or both.

When this happens the other way around... when a woman is sealed to someone, gets divorced but the sealing is not cancelled, and she remarries- she cannot be sealed to her new husband. A man can be sealed to more than one woman, but a woman cannot be sealed to more than one man.

Judominja, Wow! No wonder our Bishop wasn't real forthcoming with the information. Holy smoke! No one told me I'd spend eternity as a second wife... That may take sometime to digest.

It is a hard thing for many people to cope with and is why many will not even consider marrying someone who is still sealed to their previous spouse. However, it is the way of the Lord and has its purposes. We do not understand all His ways, but they are perfect, and we do not have to understand everything to have a testimony of its truth.

I am pretty sure that is not the case. When children are sealed to their parents they stay sealed to those very same parents even if their parents' sealing is cancelled.

As to the next question, “What happens to the children in the next life when there has been a cancellation of sealing of the parents?” it is understood that in the case of a cancellation of the sealing of the woman to the man, this does not cancel the sealing of the children to the parents, since they were born in the covenant, which is a birthright blessing. They remain in the status of the sealing to their parents and can never be sealed to anyone else. The decision as to with whom they will go will be determined by the Lord in the hereafter.

Peanutterrier2009... Please understand that JudoMinja is talking about a potential possibility. In order for that to even come close to happening is that the EX must be worthy. If she is not worthy then will not happen (Your husband must be worthy too but I am assuming that). And if she is worthy she must not move on to someone else. And finally they both must still want to be sealed together. The Lord will not force two people to be together.

Issues like this is one of the reason the First Presidency is involved in making sure it is done right and for the right reasons

The short answer is that it means nothing for your sealing to him.

The longer answer is that his ex-wife will be contacted and any objections she might have considered. It is doubtful that this will interfere, at least long-term, with any sealing between the two of you. The sealing between your husband and his ex-wife need not even be dissolved before you can be sealed to him. In such cases, it seems* that the sealing often is not dissolved at all until and unless the ex-wife finds another husband to whom she wishes to be sealed.

*I am not authoritative. I say "it seems" because that's what I have observed and have been told is the case.
