What do you think of this?

"A 1993 study published in Demography [magazine] showed that Mormons marrying within their church are least likely of all Americans to become divorced. Only 13 percent of LDS couples have divorced after five years of marriage, compared with 20 percent for religiously monogamist unions among Catholics and Protestants and 27 percent among Jews. However, when a Mormon marries outside his or her denomination, the divorce rate soars to 40 percent—second only to mixed-faith marriages involving a Jewish spouse (42 percent)."

Those numbers are old and i've heard that they were fudged a little, but i hope it is close to the truth.

I do not think divorces inside the church are this low in the first five years either. I do think it is a stumbling block for a Latter-Day Saint to marry a non-member. I have personally witnessed someones struggles in marriage because their partner does not believe the LDS faith. They have no children yet, but I am pretty sure it will be an issue once one partner wants to teach a certain set of beliefs and other not agreeing.

I concur I have seen some couples work this out but it inevitably causes friction at somepoint.

Don't make me find the citation, but I read that Mormon divorce rate is similar to other religions - except for those sealed in the temple, at which point the divorce rate drops to 6%.

But I've also heard that the classic 50% all-across-the-board divorce rate is full of errors...

I'd say 50% is pretty accurate, you either will or wont get a divorce. ;)

well it takes a lot more effort to keep thing harmonious when both partners don't have similar beliefs... and the LDS belief is very peculiar in the eyes of the world, which would make it that much more difficult.

I just thought of something else that might make inter-marriage difficult. We have a lot of stuff to deal with, some of it happening at home, such as visiting and home teaching. I can't think of another group that does this. Then there are the men's activities, scouting, RS events, etc. People are in and out of your house. You have to go to other people's houses. Depending on your calling, you may have additional duties each week, such as prepping for lessons. There is food involved. : )

I can see where this would be stressful and disruptive to a non-member and where, eventually, there might be some lobbying to keep these activities to a minimum.

Congratulations Dahlia! You and your husband now have a 94% success chance! (probably higher, since I can almost guarantee no infidelities on his part :)).
