Gotta disagree with you Jason -- one has to investigate motives of writers as an aspect of source criticism (one of the foundations of analysis). If someone writes an article about intelligence being higher in whites than in blacks, and you find out that beyond his PhD in neuropsychology he is a grand wizard in the KKK, would you trust his work is objective?

He wouldn't have to be a neuropsych to evaluate the data. I hear what you are getting at and I think "what if Michael Jordan was a child molester? Would I say his basketball prowess is bunk?"

The question at hand is whether one can trust someone's slant on an issue if they embrace a lifestyle totally contrary to the organization they are dealing with.

I would be careful what you read when it is about "leaving the Saints". Besides you know it is right why even worry about it?

Typical. "The Thinking Has Been Done!!!"

My dad's parents had Reid Nibley (Hugh's brother) to their house in Bremerton one night for a visit. For anyone who doesn't know, Reid is a virtuoso on the piano! I was unable to attend, but my parents told me that among the piano playing and talking, the subject of Martha came up. Reid said their family is sad about the accusations which they know to be wrong. After reading comments from her brother-in-law (who I think Snow already referenced) I find no reason to believe the she was abused or molested or anything related thereto.

Martha has had strained relationships with some of her siblings but a strong relationship with other brothers and sisters. Even among the siblings that still respect or support Martha (who has damaged the relationships with the other siblings), none believe that the allegations are true.

If I remember correctly, Ms. Beck's allegations of sexual abuse came about due to RMT - Recovered Memory Therapy. Here's what the critics say about RMT:

RMT Critics

The Royal College of Psychiatrists summarized their position as:

"Psychiatrists are advised to avoid engaging in any "memory recovery techniques" which are based upon the expectation of past sexual abuse of which the patient has no memory. Such...techniques may include drug-mediated interviews ["truth serum"], hypnosis, regression therapies, guided imagery, "body memories," literal dream interpretation, and journaling. There is no evidence that the use of consciousness-altering techniques, such as drug-mediated interviews or hypnosis, can reveal or accurately elaborate factual information about any past experiences, including sexual abuse."

WELL OK THEN!!

Remember when I recently said I thought you had changed? The little back and forth with Jason is sorta what I sensed the last time around. I found the bold face as interesting as well. You seem to have hardened. I find that sad.

Maureen, this tidbit clinches for me--the allegations are extremely likely to NOT BE TRUE. The church I attended during my seminary years went through a horrific ordeal. The pastor's wife had a Masters' in Counseling, and did spiritual counseling as a ministry for the church. With the best of intentions she used this therapy on a 17-year old pastor's daughter, and she "recalled" terrible abuses her father had done to her. After two years of a split family, terrible feelings, initial action against the pastor (removal of ordination, etc.), the father's lawyer advised that the girl be sent to a doctor for a physical exam. Well, her's was one of those few cases in which in which the doctor could verify with 100% certainty that the girl was a virgin who could not possibly have been abused. The church's insurance paid $1 million--I'm sure the pastor would have rather had his two years back, and a family that had never been divided.
