PC, you know I enjoy your posts and the objectivity that you bring to this forum.

In regards to your questions I think that they are an example of how other churches take some of the truths we believe, things we believe to be truths, and distort them. An example would be the very first question.

1. True we believe that we are Christians because we believe in Christ and do all we can to follow Christ according to the dictates of our own concience. We believe in His attonement, in His resurrection. We follow His instruction of "Unless a man be born of the water and the spirit he cannot enter in to the kingdom of heaven. For those reasons I would say we are Christians. Not because his name is in the name of the Church.

In addition to that our Articles of Faith share what we believe. My favorite has always been the 13th.

Not sure where someone gets the idea that the Book of Mormon is not scripture. We believe the Book of Mormon to be a second witness to Jesus Christ. Scripture just as are the Old and New Testament.

1. Mormons argue that they are Christians because “Jesus” is right in the name of their church—Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

That's one reason I believe LDS are Christians, but not the only one.

2. Mormons do NOT believe that human existence began at the creation (Genesis 1:1).

True, we dwelt with God as spirits before receiving our physical bodies.

3. Mormons believe that polygamy has proven itself to be a righteous and historically successful institution for fulfilling God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply,” and continue to practice it today.

I guess the first part could be true, but of course we don't practice it today.

4. Mormons fully embrace the doctrine of the Trinity.

In a strictly literal sense, the Godhead is composed of three separate beings who can be called a trinity, but no, LDS don't believe in the traditional concept of the Trinity.

5. Mormons believe the Heavenly Father has a physical body.

True. It is a glorified body of flesh and bone just like the one Jesus exhibited to his disciples following his resurrection.

6. Mormons hope to become gods.

True, as long as we're using a common definition for the term "gods." I hope to sit with Jesus in his throne as he sits with his Father in His throne (Rev. 3:21). I don't hope to become equal to God in authority, or in other words, I will always serve God and Christ even if I am exalted to the kind of glorious Beings they are.

7. Mormons believe anyone who does not become a Mormon in this lifetime will burn in the eternal fires of hell.

I hate the way that's phrased (become a Mormon) but I agree with what you're trying to say. We must obey the laws and ordinances of the gospel to return to God, and I believe the LDS Church is authorized to teach and administer the same.

8. Mormons believe that there is an aspect of human existence that has always been.

True. Our "intelligence" (to use a D&C term) or core consciousness was not created and is eternal. It is clothed in a spirit body, which is clothed in a physical body at our mortal birth.

9. Mormons believe that Mormon families who are “sealed” according to Church ordinances can be together eternally.

True. The LDS Church has the priesthood keys to bind on earth and in heaven.

10. There are many approved denominations within Mormonism.

False.

11. Mormons believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and that accepting his revelations is akin to the Old Testament Jews hearing the words of their prophets, and returning to right worship of God.

True.

12. Mormons believe that after the apostles died the Christian church became “apostate,” wandering away from the true teachings of Christ.

True. Also part of the apostasy was the loss of priesthood authority to preside and perform ordinances.

13. Mormons are often accused of teaching a “works-salvation,” because the Church says that salvation is something awarded at the end of our earthly existence—not at the moment of conversion.

Well salvation isn't fully experienced until after our death (resurrection is part of personal salvation). But a person can receive a spiritual witness in this life that they are saved and will return to God's presence, so I'd respond "false" to this question.

14. Mormons believe there will be many non-Mormons in heaven—especially the two lower heavens.

True.

15. The Mormon concept of hell is much more limited than the evangelical Christian understanding.

Depends on who you ask. While belief in the details may differ (whether there's actually fire), the result is the same: eternal misery caused by being separated from God, Jesus and the Spirit.

16. Mormons believe that non-Mormon Christians are in need of “evangelizing.”

True, missionary work is an inherent duty of those to whom God has revealed His full gospel. "It becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor."

17. Mormons believe each person is responsible only for his or her own sins—not for those of Adam and Eve.

True.

18. Mormons believe in the gift of tongues and interpretation, so they can be considered Pentecostal.

I suppose so, though I wouldn't label those gifts of the Spirit based on one well-known occurence on the Day of Pentecost.

19. Mormons believe in and study the Bible, but see it as incomplete, and too subject to discrepancies, because of translation errors.

True.

20. Mormons believe that the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrines and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the on-going teachings of its living prophets all constitute Holy Scripture.

True.

The only thing that bugged me about the questions was the repeated use of the term Mormon. I don't belong to the Church of Mormons. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'd feel more comfortable with your questions if you substituted LDS or Latter-day Saints in place of the term Mormon.

<div align="center">MORMONS: TRUE OR FALSE?

1. Mormons argue that they are Christians because “Jesus” is right in the name of their church—Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. False...we are Christians because we follow ALL the teachings of Christ and live his restored Gospel....not just because we belong to his church which happens to be named after him.

2. Mormons do NOT believe that human existence began at the creation (Genesis 1:1). False...we believe Adams immortal human body was created at the creation and it became mortal with the advent of the fall.... We also believe that our human bodies are created and then joined with our Spirits which were living as spirit children of the Father since before the creation of the world.

3. Mormons believe that polygamy has proven itself to be a righteous and historically successful institution for fulfilling God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply,” and continue to practice it today. Well of course this is false you need to simplify the question to "The Mormons continue to practice polygamy today"

10. There are many approved denominations within Mormonism. False

11. Mormons believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and that accepting his revelations is akin to the Old Testament Jews hearing the words of their prophets, and returning to right worship of God. True

12. Mormons believe that after the apostles died the Christian church became “apostate,” wandering away from the true teachings of Christ. False...we believe that the original church became apostate because the Priesthood authority was lost when the original Apostles died out...they didn't just wander away from the true church.

13. Mormons are often accused of teaching a “works-salvation,” because the Church says that salvation is something awarded at the end of our earthly existence—not at the moment of conversion. False...we believe that everyone will be ressurected regardless of wether they believe in Christ or not...this is a gift from Christ because he overcame death....to have eternal life or eternal progression we believe you have to make covenants with the Lord through ordinances in the church and include keeping these covenants and commandments.

14. Mormons believe there will be many non-Mormons in heaven—especially the two lower heavens. True

15. The Mormon concept of hell is much more limited than the evangelical Christian understanding. True...we believe hell is the total disenchanting of the Godhead...outer darkness.

16. Mormons believe that non-Mormon Christians are in need of “evangelizing.” True...the Lord has commanded the members of his church to proclaim the Gospel.

17. Mormons believe each person is responsible only for his or her own sins—not for those of Adam and Eve. True

18. Mormons believe in the gift of tongues and interpretation, so they can be considered Pentecostal. False....we believe in the gift of toungues to do the Lords work and only to be an instrument for doing his errand.

19. Mormons believe in and study the Bible, but see it as incomplete, and too subject to discrepancies, because of translation errors. True

20. Mormons believe that the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrines and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the on-going teachings of its living prophets all constitute Holy Scripture. True

<div align="center">MORMONS: TRUE OR FALSE?</div>

1. Mormons argue that they are Christians because “Jesus” is right in the name of their church—Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. TRUE ("argue" could be contend or explain, I suppose).

2. Mormons do NOT believe that human existence began at the creation (Genesis 1:1). TRUE. You should know that most non-LDS Christians will find this particularly interesting and surprising.

3. Mormons believe that polygamy has proven itself to be a righteous and historically successful institution for fulfilling God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply,” and continue to practice it today. FALSE. Had to throw in the stereotype to debunk.

4. Mormons fully embrace the doctrine of the Trinity. FALSE. The three persons are not essentially or ontologically one, according to the COJCLDS, but they are according to trinitarian doctrine.

5. Mormons believe the Heavenly Father has a physical body. TRUE. This is another surprise to many non-LDS Christians.

6. Mormons hope to become gods. TRUE. This is truly shocking to non-LDS.

7. Mormons believe anyone who does not become a Mormon in this lifetime will burn in the eternal fires of hell. FALSE. Keep in mind the discussion about all the Christian teachings of Joseph Smith's day being declared an abomination, etc. Some may actually believe this.

8. Mormons believe that there is an aspect of human existence that has always been. TRUE. This was a key to me understanding much about Mormonism--especially #6.

9. Mormons believe that Mormon families who are “sealed” according to Church ordinances can be together eternally. TRUE. Had to give your "flagship" teaching some spotlight. :-)

10. There are many approved denominations within Mormonism. FALSE. The Fundamentalists, the COC (RLDS), etc. are not recognized by the COJCLDS, which remains, by far the dominant organization adhering to "Mormon" teachings.

TRUE

13. Mormons are often accused of teaching a “works-salvation,” because the Church says that salvation is something awarded at the end of our earthly existence—not at the moment of conversion. TRUE (You didn't have to agree with the accusation to mark TRUE)

14. Mormons believe there will be many non-Mormons in heaven—especially the two lower heavens. TRUE (okay, I realize some LDS do not consider the Terrestial and Telestial Kingdoms to be 'heaven'--I'm defining them that way, because they are kingdoms of blessing, not torment).

15. The Mormon concept of hell is much more limited than the evangelical Christian understanding. TRUE (in evanglicalism, those who do not accept the salvation of Christ on some level, in this lifetime, will burn in hell).

16. Mormons believe that non-Mormon Christians are in need of “evangelizing.” TRUE. You believe you got something we don't.

17. Mormons believe each person is responsible only for his or her own sins—not for those of Adam and Eve. TRUE

18. Mormons believe in the gift of tongues and interpretation, so they can be considered Pentecostal. FALSE. See the "Are Mormons Pentecostal?" string.

19. Mormons believe in and study the Bible, but see it as incomplete, and too subject to discrepancies, because of translation errors. TRUE. The "discrepancies" I have in mind here are as innocent as differing interpretations amongst the non-LDS denominations.

20. Mormons believe that the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrines and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the on-going teachings of its living prophets all constitute Holy Scripture. TRUE. It could be argued that until a living prophet's words are canonized they are not Scripture, but I'm taking the broad understanding that the living prophets do indeed prophecy, and their words are to be taken as being from God.

Thank you for balancing the "TRUE" with the point. Of course, this is not the only, nor the strongest point LDS can make. However, I've heard this claim at least a half dozen times--mostly here, but once "live."

To demonstrate the weakness of this particular claim, you sure wouldn't want to claim fellowship with the Church of Jesus Christ Christian (a white supremicist outfit, clothed in church skin).

PC...I really have a question about this one....if the evangelical Christian view on this is really "those who do not accept the salvation of Christ on some level, in this lifetime, will burn in hell".

Is this true? Do they really believe this? Then what about those who would never hear the word of God? Those who never got the chance to hear about Jesus? They burn in hell? How about little children too young to learn about Christ who die...they burn too? What about those Muslims who are banned from any Christian teaching...them too? Communist Soviet Union or China...those billions of people who never heard a word....they burn also? If this is true I do not want any part the evangelical Christian God, for my God is a fair and loving God who would never condem someone for not having the opportunity to accept Christ because they never heard of him or his Gospel....WOW! All I can say is thank the Lord for the LDS ordinances for the dead!

Okay, I'll change it.

All I can say is thank the Lord for the LDS ordinances for the dead!

First, there are some Protestant ministers/churches that will say, "Yes, you don't embrace Christ, you burn in hell. If you never heard, it's the failure of the Church, or the predestined will of God."

There is a more nuanced position--a more humble position. That is, "God is good, just and merciful. We do not know what people know in their hearts. It could be that people will be judged based on what they knew. It may be that God will honor the one who responded to the subtle witness to a Creator find in nature. We don't know. So, we send missionaries, and we live the missionary life. We tell, we proclaim, and we do the good works, so men may see them and glorify God in heaven."

My answer is not as concrete as the LDS answer, but I am comfortable leaving some things in God's hands, and being faithful with what I do know. By the way, most Protestant churches teach that children, up to the age of accountability, are automatically 'saved.'

Note that although some of the LDS posters answered differently concerning the T/F, based upon the explanations I feel pretty confident presenting this quiz. It's meant to be a teaching tool, not a diagnostic test. Thanks for all your help.

I was told that it was hard to "burn in hell" and the worst that most people will get is the telestial kingdom, which is better than earth (because we all know how hard it is to get better than earth *sarcasm*).

I was told (by my dad.. I am still new) that only REALLY BAD people go to the outer darkness, like sons of perdition(sp?).

To be sent into outer darkness a person must choose to NOT accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior after fully understanding who He is, and what He can do for them.

Everyone else will have chosen to refuse some of what God told them that was revealed to them personally.... except for those who live by EVERY word of God revealed to them personally.

That's my story and right now I'm stickin' to it unless you can tell me more than God already told me. :)
