Hala401 Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 I thought a little less gravity would be nice this afternoon. So, I was just going through the internet news, since I do not have TV here, and noticed a story about a beauty contestant "Tebowing" after she won. Um, so why do they call what she did a Tebow? It did not look like a curtsey. Where did that name come from. Hmmm. Should LDS women involve themselves in beauty contests? Isn't this straining Agency a bit? Quote
annewandering Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 its beyond me, Hala but they do get scholarships etc from them. I guess that might explain it. Quote
Dravin Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 The name comes from Tim Tebow who is famous for doing it.Hmmm. Should LDS women involve themselves in beauty contests? Isn't this straining Agency a bit?I don't see how it strains agency. I could see the arguement for straining injunctions against vanity or modesty, but agency? Not so much. Quote
applepansy Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Tim Tebow took a knee and prayed. Now taking a knee in public and offering a small prayer is disprectfully called Tebowing instead of Praying or Thanking God. Quote

Hala401 Posted July 19, 2012 Author Report Posted July 19, 2012 No. Why should it be?I have to say that I have some really conflicting emotions about this and admit that jealousy could be one of them, thought that is not the only one. I was taught to not be exhibitionistic as it is shameful, but admit that I like attention; like way too much, and were it not for the Holy Spirit and my desire to please Heavenly Father ... well, enough said.I will pray in church, but out in public just does not feel right to me because Jesus Christ said to pray in private. It is just hard to sort things out some times. Quote
annewandering Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Nothing wrong with struggling with it. In fact its an acknowledgement that the reasons for prayer might not always be spiritual. I think it is good to think about how we, personally, feel about doing prayer in different ways and places and why we feel that way. Quote

It is more a part of my thinking than I like to admit. As a very undeserving recipient of forgiveness because of the Atonement, sometimes I obsess about pleasing Heavenly Father. Quote
Bini Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Clearly I'm out of the loop. I had no idea what Tebowing was until I Googled it. As far as beauty pageants/competitions go, it doesn't bother me one way or the other. Some people compete in sports, showcasing their endurance and strength. Others compete in academic events, showcasing their brain power. Beauty is just another one of those things, in my opinion. Quote

beefche Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 I really respect and like Tim Tebow. Here is a man who isn't afraid of displaying his beliefs, living his beliefs, and being ridiculed for them. He has his faults (don't we all?), but I believe him to be genuinely trying to live his faith the best he knows how. Quote
Hala401 Posted July 20, 2012 Author Report Posted July 20, 2012 And he's dang good lookin to boot!Sigh ! Quote

It is just hard to sort things out some times.I will in pray in church or other appropriate public events. I would not kneel after a sporting event and give a personal prayer. That's too much for me.As for beauty contests, there really isn't anything wrong with them. They offer many girls the opportunity to qualify for scholarships and grants that put them through school. Sharlene Wells is an amazing woman and brought great attention to the Church.I like to bring less attention to myself than more as a general rule. So when it comes to praying in public like Tim Tebow did.... well, this is the scripture that comes to mind:3 Nephi 13:1Verily, verily, I say that I would that ye should do alms unto the poor; but take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father who is in heaven. applepansy Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 I wish I had some of it. :)Hala, I'm sure you have talents. Don't hide them under a bushel. :) Quote
beefche Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 I have no problem praying in public. I'm not praying to be seen of men, but because I feel it is appropriate for that time. At each Girl's Night Out, my high school girlfriends and I pray before we eat dinner. I think it's in the motive/intent. If we are doing it to show how righteous we are, then yeah, not appropriate. If we do it because we desire to communicate with God in praise or thanksgiving, then go for it. Quote
Guest Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 I don't understand getting a scholarship for God-given beauty. It's not like they did anything to deserve it. But then, I'm no beauty queen. Quote
beefche Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 Well, they SAY that the majority of the judging on beauty pageants is on the interview. I've always wondered, is that like saying you only read the articles in Playboy? Quote

beefche Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 Ok, that is just embarrassing. I recognize that she must be very nervous. But, "...and The Iraq, and everywhere, such as. And we should help..." doesn't even make sense. Quote

Guest Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 I guess I don't see beauty as a talent to be developed. Quote
Dravin Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 I guess I don't see beauty as a talent to be developed. There is the plucking, the shaving, the make-up, the exercise, the tanning, the not eating the donuts... that last one is one talent I really need to work on. Quote
