norah63 Posted July 31, 2012 Report Posted July 31, 2012 This morning on c-span the topic was, paying at risk children to go to school. How many more at risk will suddenly appear if they get paid? When did we drop the ball when it came to education? Some states already do this as was talked about. Quote
applepansy Posted July 31, 2012 Report Posted July 31, 2012 You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink? Public education is free. If anyone wants to take advantage of that then they should. Paying someone to go to Public School - FREE EDUCATION - just feels wrong. Why should those who took advantage of free education and became productive members of society pay to bribe those who won't take advantage of an opportunity other people in this world don't have? Traveler Posted July 31, 2012 Report Posted July 31, 2012 This morning on c-span the topic was, paying at risk children to go to school. How many more at risk will suddenly appear if they get paid? When did we drop the ball when it came to education? Some states already do this as was talked about. Not so long ago there was a proposition being presented in California that was opposed by the LDS (Mormon) church. We were very much criticized for using “church” funds for political purposes. But for the most part most Mormons stood firm. Our prophet declared that the proposition in question was an assault on families and that if society was to allow such a thing that it would place children at risk, that it would be both morally and economically harmful to our country and traditions – especially and in particular for the family. In essence your very concerns was prophesied would be the result. At the time it seemed like such a simple thing and a solution to many failing relationships. The year was 1963 and the proposition was no fault divorce. Indeed why couples should stay together in abusive and failed relationships? – was a primary argument. This was when the ball was dropped. The prophet prophesied that as a result a time would come when “most” children would be forced to grow to adulthood in broken homes - the result of which we are all now paying for. Many thought that it would not affect them – they would hold to their morals and values and not be touched. The prophets of G-d have warned us and continue to warn us. They will speak again to the world in October. Some will listen but if history is any indication most will think themselves safe and protected in their own beliefs and interpretations – while ignoring G-ds prophets. The Traveler Quote
Backroads Posted July 31, 2012 Report Posted July 31, 2012 Many of these at-risk children will make an appearance at school and that will be that. Sounds like extra welfare to me. Quote

Gramajane Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 As I have been a sub school teacher k-12, ( I loved the work for the most part, dealing with some of the teachers was worse than most of the kids!) I found that the "Love and Logic" parenting principles (do a goggle search) were a great help. I actually taught a class where some boys in a remedial level class were saying that they didn't need to learn English, because they planned to work in the construction of roads. I was able to help them see that to GET a job there, requires filling out an application etc. When kids (any of us?) can connect the dots to see how something could make a difference in our lives (especially if it could hurt us!) suddenly there seems to come some natural motivation. When kids have learned by their parents applying logical reasonable consequences WITH LOVE and empathy (not anger) and let the youth have as many appropriate choices as possible, kids will actually learn to make choices for their own good, as they will learn to ask themselves (just like in a game of chess :) --- if I do this or that, what harm or good could come of that in the frame of things? marshac Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 IMO public school should cost some amount of money to attend, and if a parent can't afford it, then some sort of service could be rendered. Why? People tend to place very little value on things they get for free. Quote

applepansy Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 If its free why do they tax me?That's sort of my point. Its free to the child. K-12 is public education. Families don't have to come up with tuition costs etc.As for taxes. I think public education is worth my tax dollars. There are so many other areas where my tax dollars are being wasted, but public school is not one of them. We could argue about how public schools are run but that would derail the thread. If we bribe/pay a child to take advantage of public school where will those extra dollars come from? More taxes of course. That's the part I'm opposed to. Quote
norah63 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 The cost is always laid on the home owner. Even if they never had kids to send to school. Where as the unwed parents who draw the stamps and checks get the education offered free. So If They have at risk kids, and don't' have any incentive, to take advantage of a free education. Why pay ? It's like bribing a kid to learn. And for sure there are lots of single parents that do a wonderful job of raising their children. Don't want to single out any group. Just tired of paying for someone else's life style. Sure don't have taxpayer dollars to pay a woman to get a pregnancy visit. Quote
