I have multiple piercings. They have not closed after all these years. When the counsel came out for women to have only one pair of earrings, I stopped wearing all my other sets (4 holes in my right ear, 3 in my left).

I chose to follow the counsel because I did not want to start a habit or set a precedent for not following the counsel of my leaders. That was something that mattered to me then, and still matters to me now.

Maybe following that one simple thing, is what will help me to keep following simple things, so that one day I can follow something harder or bigger.

I believe that following the counsel of my leaders is important, if for nothing other than proving myself humble, obedient, and willing to go wherever and do whatever Heavenly father requires of me.

Just my personal thoughts. ~TG

It was more of a reaction to the 60's counterculture, which wore their hair long and beards as a symbol of freedom and rebellion. The church didn't want to be associated with that image.

the 60's have been over for quite some time now.

Tell that to Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, etc.

 I didn't say the PEOPLE were untrustworthy. Just the beards!

Really, anything that hides half your face or more... From oldschool horror movie hockey masks to fancy dress venitian masks, from banditos bandanas, to surgical scrub masks. I wanna see those muscles!

But we still have missionaries in the EU.

Ever notice? Where cheek kissing is common, men tend to shave.

Stubble is an acquired taste.

But the societal implication of that look remains. Being labeled a "hippie" is not a good thing even today. It's like wearing your Florida Seminoles jersey. It gives off a bad impression.

Go Gators. :)

There was an abrupt shift by the church from the burly mountain man look towards the suburban business look. It was no accident, as who wants to be intimidated by a mountain man missionary? Through the business model, the church gained more credibility.

That being said, no amount of facial hair, dress or body art is worth someones judgement, or rejection of their worth.

It wasn't abrupt, and it wasn't a conscious shift to be more business like. In the 1800s, you were respectable if you had a big bushy beard. The leadership has always been at the forefront of conservative business like attire and for the 1800s, that included big bushy beards.

Do an experiment. Look at the pictures of the presidents of the church, and compare them to the pictures of US Presidents, and you'll see the exact same "abrupt shift" happening at the exact same time.

Nothing magical or even prophetic about it.

Unless you live in California, then it's status quo.

Some Polynesian cultures, Somoan comes to mind right off the bat. There are many cultures that have some sort of tattooing as an integral part of their culture.

It would be like asking Texan's to go vegan. :D (That's a joke, har har har)

Lone Star Plate | the blog of vegan Texas Just sayin' :D

So what about guys who get branded? Many black frats use branding. I find it disgusting, but they didn't ask for my approval. I'm pretty sure you can come into the Church with what you have, but what if you were in a frat when you converted and wanted to get branded like your brothers? Church approved or not?
