Maureen Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) I know some of the posters here do not care for the Salt Lake Tribune, but here is an article about D. Michael Quinn. I enjoyed reading it.Noted historian still believes in Mormonism, but now as an outsider | The Salt Lake TribuneM. Edited September 29, 2013 by Maureen Quote
bytebear Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 The problem with his authorship is that he reads his own agenda into all of his conclusions. Quote

bytebear Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 In your opinion? :)M.He believes that brotherly sealings, common during the time of Smith, were homosexual marriages. Quote
pam Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 Also the Salt Lake Tribulation will take advantage of any opportunity to turn something negative when it involves the church. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 Yeah, I've also noticed that he tends to read sources a certain way. Frankly, he did it when he was writing stuff orthodox Mormons agreed with, too--we just didn't care back then. I always get a kick out of the critics who assume Quinn must be unbiased because he is/was a Mormon. Given the guy's personal life, I think the last thing he wants is for people to believe that Benson/Hunter/Hinckley/Monson are messengers of God--regardless of what he claims to believe about the restoration narrative. Maureen Posted September 28, 2013 Author Report Posted September 28, 2013 Also the Salt Lake Tribulation will take advantage of any opportunity to turn something negative when it involves the church. That may be, but there is also the chance that you read into their message as negative when it's possible that it's just information.M. Maureen Posted September 28, 2013 Author Report Posted September 28, 2013 ...I think the last thing he wants is for people to believe that Benson/Hunter/Hinckley/Monson are messengers of God....Only Mr. Quinn can answer that, but he does say in the article that he does acknowledge them as human.M. It's the way they usually are when it comes to anything LDS. Quote
Vort Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 I feel very bad for Brother Quinn. But his situation is largely of his own making, and until he humbles himself and repents, he will not find what he claims to want. Quote

And there's also "a chance" that the Deseret News chose not to run this article merely because they didn't think it was newsworthy. But I doubt it. We really do ourselves a disservice when we perpetuate the myth of an unbiased news media. Quote
john doe Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 That may be, but there is also the chance that you read into their message as negative when it's possible that it's just information.M.The SL Trib caters to its readership. Reading the comments section after an article can give you a pretty good idea of who its readers are. The Trib was started as an anti-LDS alternative to the Deseret News, and while some of its reporting of facts are accurate, the slant they give those facts is aimed to foment reactions from its readership. Without bothering to read the article, let me guess: 90% of the comments direct anger toward some aspect of the LDS Church. Am I right? Quote
