Just_A_Guy Posted October 3, 2013 Report Posted October 3, 2013 In this instance the Book of Mormon is quoting Isaiah (I think Isaiah 11:8). The original Hebrew word in that scripture is tsepha--a viper, or other poisonous snake. The Bible's translators rendered the word "cockatrice", after a mythical creature. Other translations use the term "basilisk". (Yeah, like in Harry Potter.) Wikipedia has fascinating entries on both terms. Quote
Lakumi Posted October 4, 2013 Author Report Posted October 4, 2013 I thought the idea of mythological creatures in the Bible made it a more interesting read as a kid, painted a far more interesting picture in my mind, and admittedly, still does... are there any unicorns, please say yes Quote
