the_jason Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 So with the callings that are "just to fill a spot", you don't believe the bishop consults with the Lord, or at the very least gives it some serious thought? Quote
Canuck Mormon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 I'm also the 11 year old Blazer Scouts Co-leader. Canuck, Im confused by this. Scouts? Thats not a calling surely? After I get married, me and my wife are going to lie low (at least try) for a few months until we get settled. sixpacktr Posted good luck with that! They had my calling lined up before we were even married and before I was in the ward!!!!Yes, Scouts is a calling. We have our own LDS troop for cubs & scouts. Basically it is the Young Men's program disguised as scouting. The good thing about the ward we're moving to, is because of my son, who I only have custody of every other weekend, we will only be attending Sacrament meeting until September. The ward starts @ 3:00pm. We'll have to wait and see what happens Quote

Sure I do. I do the same thing. Guess you could say I am not one for blind obedience. Quote
Blessed Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 I think the idea of callings is a good idea. We do not practice "callings" per se unless it comes to priesthood in the CofC. However, we still have many roles that need to be filled on an annual basis and for that we use an election process. In the past I have been a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, women's leader, and worship director. All of those roles sure have impacted my life in a deep and meaningful way. The church we attend now we are nothing more than benchwarmers and there is nothing fun about that. You have to be a member to serve and I am not going to get baptized in order to do that. So for now... it is benchwarming. Quote
anniem Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Help me out here...has anyone heard the story recently of a faithful church member who was extended a 5th calling? She said something like this to the bishop: "I've never turned down a calling, and I don't intend to. But let me tell you a little bit about what's going on in my life" Then she let him know about her four other callings (apparently he wasn't aware) and discussed with him other issues in her life. He was thankful for her honesty and retracted the calling. So she still had never refused a calling. Has someone else read or heard this story? I think that leaders are inspired, AND that information can help inspiration. Quote
Brother Dorsey Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 I'm just wondering what callings we all have in our wards. I am second counsellor in primary and also music director for the ward.I have had only 4 callings in the church since I was baptized..(probably because I was apostate for a number of years)I was a Stake Missionary, Gospel Principles teacher, Gift of Family History consultant and am currently the ward Sunday School Pres.....the last three in the past 3 years...the first was in 1998. As I look at some of the callings the Lord has to offer I can honestly say I am scared to death of being offered a few of them...the Bishopric for one...who has the time? Nursery for another.....taking care of a bunch of terrible 2 and 3 year olds would be way too much for me. And anything to do with music....I can't sing at all and the only musical instrument I can play is my stereo! However....if the Lord asks...I will accept! Absolutely! Quote
Aphrodite Posted May 4, 2007 Author Report Posted May 4, 2007 Not so. Some calling are only to fill a spot. If you don't believe me look at some ppl who have many callings.... Revelation...or desperation?I have to agree with you Strawb. Our ward is very smnd Ive sat with my primary president on a number of occoasions, going through people in the ward to see who is actually available to be a teacher-once there was literally one person who could do it. So they were called. Im sure she must have prayed on it but its hardly revelation, just common sense really-them or no one lol. I have to admit to seeing some 'suspicious' callings I'm sure people know what I mean. People higher up calling their friends etc into callings that make you think, 'uh-huh,'. Plus the fact all my newly married friends have been called into primary after marriage-every single one with no exceptions, almost as a 'trial-run' before you have kids. That annoys me a bit, just because Im young and will one day be a new mother doesnt mean INot so. Some calling are only to fill a spot. I'm not a kid person. One of the primary teachers just asked to be released as she was sick of being in primary. My husband said if you do that, you aren't given another calling for a while. However, she was just callled as a RS teacher. He just shrugged. I suppose the bottom line is the Lord knows you and whats best for you. Quote

Hi Blessed,I'm just curious what denom it is that doesn't let you serve unless you join the church? That makes no sense to me. I have visited too many churches to count and as far as I know, they welcome (and greatly appreciate) any help whether it's from a visitor or a member. In a few churches I've visited, periodically there is a flyer in the bulletin with opportunities to serve. Usually you indicate a few choices in case your first choice is no longer available. After reading this, it sounds like I'm doubting you, and I'm totally not! :) Quote
