My sister just got our Will setup for us, in the event that something happens to me and my husband, then she will have guardianship over our daughter until she's 18. I am so happy we got this done but then I worried about family sealings.

My husband and I aren't sealed, and obviously our daughter is not sealed to us. Is it possible for my sister and her husband to go ahead and seal our daughter to them if we're dead? If it is, I find this very upsetting, as the goal is for me and my husband to have our family sealed but we're just not there yet. But if we both suddenly died tomorrow - we're out of luck. I haven't brought my feelings up with my sister because it's kind of an awkward topic.

Guardianship is not the same as adoption.

Unless your daughter was adopted by them, she cannot be sealed directly to them.

What should happen, is that your temple work should be done for you and your husband. Then your daughter can be sealed to both of you by proxy. If you're sealed to your sister through your parents, then your sister will be sealed to your daughter through your sealing with your husband.

In essence, nothing to worry about. Take a deep breath. :)

I expect your sister would have you and your husband sealed, then have your daughter sealed to you by proxy. That's what I would do in her situation.

You should probably talk directly to your sister about this. It's unlikely, of course, but if you've gone to the trouble to create a will, it's a simple enough thing to ask your sister to see to your family's temple work if you don't get it done before you die, including having your daughter sealed to her parents.

Ditto what Skippy & Vort have said. Nothing to worry about.

There are a few circumstances that permit a child to be sealed to someone other then birth parents or adopted parents; however, when it is a "living ordinance" for the child (or the parents in the case of a deceased child) there are some pretty strict guidelines & hoops to jump thru for approval.

That doesn't mean there are not people that circumvent the guidelines & bypass the approvals, though I like to believe that the Lord will determine the validity of those ordinances when someone goes around the system to accomplish them.

There are many many confusing circumstance of ordinances that will only be straightened out in the next life! Though I have no doubt they will be corrected.

Bini, if something should happen to you and your husband tomorrow you will not be out of luck. The Lord knows the progress that you and your husband are making. Your family would need to wait one year from the time of your death to do your temple work for you, and then your daughter at that time would be sealed to you.

Talk to your sister about this. Tell her that if you and your husband die before you go to the temple, that you would like her (or other family members) do your temple work for you and have your daughter sealed to you. I wouldn't think that she would have any problem with this. I imagine that she loves you and would think that would be the natural thing to do.

Just for the record, I've always used it as "Sorry Out of Luck".

Thanks for the insight, guys. This has really been bugging me.

Agreed. My mom always said "sore out of luck." I honestly don't know what else it would be used for.

I think most people understand it to mean "Poop out of luck" except with the other word that means the same thing but starts with an "s". :)
