Doctor Steuss Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Some might dig this (I certainly do). I love it when a truth transcends denominational/sectarian/religious barriers... Baha’i Faith: “Lay not on any soul a load that you would not wish to be laid upon you, and desire not for anyone the things you would not desire for yourself” – Baha’u’llah, Gleanings Hinduism: “This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.” – Mahabharata 5:1517 Buddhism: “Treat not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.” – Udana-Varga 5.18 Confucianism: “One word which sums up the basis of all good conduct… loving kindness. Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.” -- Confucius, Analects 15.23 Taoism: “Regard your neighbor’s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss.” T’ai Shang Kan, Ying P’ien, 213-218 Sikhism: “I am a stranger to no one; and no one is a stranger to me. Indeed, I am a friend to all.” – Guru Granth Sahib, pg. 1299 Christianity: “In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law of the prophets.” – Jesus, Matthew 7:12 Unitarianism: “We affirm and promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” – Unitarian principle Native Spirituality: “We are as much alive as we keep the earth alive” – Chief Dan George Zoroastrianism: “Do not do unto others whatever is injurious to yourself.” – Shayast-na-Shayast 13.29 Jainism: “One should treat all creatures in the world as one would like to be treated.” -- Mahazira, Sutrakritanga Judaism: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. This is the whole Torah; all the rest is commentary.” – Hillel, Talmud, Shabbal 31a Islam: “Not one of you truly believes until you wish for others what you wish for yourself.” – The Prophet Mohammed, Hadith Quote

I am half finished with Rough Stone Rolling, I finished the Emma Smith one, and now I have this Porter Rockwell bio. by Richard Dewey that I want to read, plus I have been reading my scriptures online and I am already six months ahead of my read through the standard works in a year schedule....so, you see....I have less time to play up here as my books have my attention for now....I pop in still, and I went to the beach today...My kids are both sun burnt...poor Mikey!!! He is especially suffering!!! I tried to put sun block on him...but he was "too cool", now he sees the wisdom in my wanting to put it on him!!! A painful lesson!!! I spent the afternoon lurking in the shallow water, looking for pretty stones to put in my aquarium at home. ( I boil all rocks and things before adding them to my aquarium)...it was a nice day!!! I'm a little sun burnt, too...but I used sunblock, so I am not suffering like my poor son is tonight!!! My neighbor gave us some tea bags too put on it...something about the tannic acid, she said it would help. Anyway...the quote: It is just one of my many quotes that I collect and I thought it was appropriate here. Jesus is the Golden Ruler...he is the door to Heaven...all the good works in the world will do you no good till you have a personal relationship with the Golden Ruler. Quote

He is a hillbilly, redneck, good hearted guy...but he is loud, opinionated, and obnoxious too!!! He has a heart of gold, though!!! He would give the shirt off his back for a total stranger!!! My kids like that new show: My name is Earl...because it reminds them of there Uncle Hokie....yes, Hokie!!! I told ya we were a bunch of rednecks!!! I don't let them watch that Earl show though...I didn't like some of the content...but you get the idea...I love Porter Rockwell too!!!!! Quote

Iggy Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 He is 13, and I'm suddenly an idiot!!!! again - you will continue to get dumber and dumber until he either becomes a parent himself or turns 50. Sometimes they discover Mom is not so dumb when they hit 40. At least that has been my observation regarding my brothers and our Mom. Now of course I never thought my Mother was dumb - Nooooooo, just stupid. That is until I reached the ripe old age of 30. Then miraculously, overnight it seems, she gained massive amounts of wisdom. I remember when I first "discovered" Mormon history. There was something in that really called out to me. I know how corny that sounds, but it did! And I've never looked back since. I've slowed down . . . but never looked back.Anyway...the quote: It is just one of my many quotes that I collect and I thought it was appropriate here. "Peter Rockwell"I am not so enamored of Porter Rockwell as everyone else is here, or at least not in the same way. Everything everyone has said of him is true, especially your "pit bull"! description. That's an absolutely perfect way to describe him.But he was also a murderer, among other things, and I'm not talking about Boggs. He did things his way, regardless of what anyone else thought. For example, he was a "serial" polygamist. He would meet a woman he liked, marry her, tire of her and just leave. Then he'd meet another woman, "marry" her, and repeat the pattern. There was one woman whom he did genuinely care for who unfortunately died. But my point is he did practice polygamy, but in his own way, and no one could tell him different. Even Brigham couldn't control him, and it irked him. (Actually, I like that about him.)He also drank and partied, but was the man you wanted if you were in trouble. He was beyond human when human strength was not enough.Of course, everything I've written is far too simplistic to describe the "whole" of Rockwell. I need to head to the library to re-read up on him myself. In fact, I think Porter deserves his own thread since he keeps popping up in others.I'm just concerned mentioning how devoted he was to Joseph and Brigham, which is true, will give the wrong impression that he was a pious and practicing Saint. He wasn't. He was also a murderer, and I see that part of his personality get set aside often when speaking of him.Elphaba Quote
