Vort Posted November 5, 2015 Report Posted November 5, 2015 Just turn on Netflicks and watch Europa Report. I've extolled its virtues on this forum before, so I won't bother doing it again. But though,CGI-wise, it is much less ambitious (and far less expensive), the science is pretty much dead-on for just about everything in the movie. Great flick. jerome1232 1 Quote
jerome1232 Posted November 5, 2015 Report Posted November 5, 2015 I like my sci-fi a bit more like futuristic fantasy. Most sci-fi is essentially that anyways. Quote
Crypto Posted November 5, 2015 Report Posted November 5, 2015 (edited) I like my sci-fi a bit more like futuristic fantasy. Most sci-fi is essentially that anyways.Same here, but the presentation of the sci-fi can make a big difference. If it looks like it aims to be realistic but then ignores reality, that breaks the illusion for me. Edited November 5, 2015 by Crypto Quote
Guest Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Gee, that makes me NOT want to see the Europa Report. If we want reality, we'd sit around the living room and stare at each other. I watch a movie for entertaining value. The more realistic, the less entertaining. Want proof? I give you 2001: A Space Odyssey. Nice lights. Very realistic treatment of space, zero G, silence, momentum, etc. But BORRRIINNNGGG!!! Quote

I love paintings, and rarely enjoy photography. To each their own.(By photography, I mean large pictures of things in an ascetic/artistic sense. By all means I love family photos) Quote
Blackmarch Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 the martian got 4/6 from the cinema vs science critic which apparently is up there with the best entertainment + portrayal of sciency things if not the best according to him. Quote

Great flick.it reminds me of the part of "2010; the year we make contact" by arthur C clarke where the Chinese land on europa to refuel their craft there so they could get to the odyssey before the american and russion cooperative mission could.. but have an incident where some critter that's attracted to the heat and lights of the craft ends up wrecking their ship and stranding them there. and there are no mentions of any rescue mission in any of the story at that point or any of the novels further down in the story. Vort, I wish I had read your earlier discourse on the Europa Report. Maybe, then I would have been more prepared for the fact that everyone dies!!! An acquaintance of mine had also extolled the virtues of The Europa Report, and along with their recommendation and yours, I decided to watch it last night. I was totally unprepared that everyone dies!!! As you say, it was a very good movie. I wouldn't call it great, but it was good. But, I don't like movies where everyone dies!!! Quote
