This is talking about inner strength... It is what gets us through "what lies benind us" & what is still to come or "what lies before us".

There is no deep hidden meaning... It means exactly what is says.

I think what Susie is saying is, that it is what makes us who we are inside that got us through the past and will get us through the future. It is our character, our fortitude, our belief, our commitment to God or whatever we are committed too, and everything else that goes into making each of us who we are, that will get us through the future.
