shanstress70 Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Do you guys have a drive-in theater in your town? We have one about 30 mins away... had another that closed down recently. Here's the website for the one still open, showing pics that will take you back if you're my age or older: http://raleighroaddrivein.com/_wsn/page9.htmlWhen I was a child, my mom and a few of her friends would go and take us kids. We would take chairs and sit outside to watch the movie. For intermission we'd go in and buy hotdogs and french fries in cups that they kept under a red light to keep them warm. They'd stay for the double feature and we'd always fall asleep in the car. Good times!I wanted to go tonight, but they aren't playing anything that's family-oriented... plus it's raining for the first time in two months or so... YAY!What are some other retro places that you guys like to go to... if any? I'm all into the retro thing, especially food places. Here's a neat page that lets you look up these places in your state: http://www.agilitynut.com/roadside.htmlMaybe it will help you find something fun to do this weekend! :) Quote
FrankJL Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Yes, there is one right next to my aunt's house. So whenever there is a movie to see we bring the little portable radio, and patio chairs and watch the movie from on top her garage. Quote
pam Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 We have one in the SLC area. Currently it has 5 screens. We try to go when we can. You can even bbq there and you can find many people with a complete spread of food while enjoying the movie. Quote

Wow!Now to switch to eateries... do you guys ever watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives' on Food Network? It's an interesting show and a lot of the restaurants they go to are the retro diners. I live in Raleigh, but Charlotte which is a couple hours away has a lot of places like this... we have just a few, like Char Grill http://www.choppedonion.com/id37.html Quote
jaguarangel Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 We had one growing up as a teen. It was such fun! We got another 5-screener, and then they both went away. Now many years later, we have another drive-in! Really wanted to go tonight, too, but don't think they're very good shows--rated bad. I remember going with my parents when I little and playing on the swings up front. Ahhh... Quote

Jbs2763 Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 i think that there are a couple around Indy, but what i enjoy are teh drive in resturants, the pre-cursors to "sonic" and the like...but the ones that aint that fancy, there is a place called "Dog and Suds" they make thier own root beer, and my favorite is called "earl's", had been "busters" for years but Buster retired and sold it to earl (who appears to be about 90 himself) but this place looks strait outta the 50's you pull up, a girl comes out and takes your order, you order off of the hand painted sign on the side of the bulding, and their trademark item is a tenderloin sandwich almost the size of a dinner plate and about half an inch thick....for $4.75 good stuff Quote

They take me back to my childhood... not that I was a child in the 50's! But the 70's.Umm, tenderloin sandwich. There's a place in Mt. Airy, NC - or Mayberry according to The Andy Griffith Show - called Snappy Lunch that specializes in Tenderloin sandwiches... the same Snappy lunch and tenderloin sandwich that Andy and Barney talk about in their show. Here's an interesting link: http://www.visitmayberry.com/detailsnorthc...sCategoryID=374<div class='quotemain'>We have one in the SLC area. Currently it has 5 screens. We try to go when we can. Wow. http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/uttredwThat does sound great to have a BBQ at a drive-in. The one here doesn't allow you to bring in your own food because that eats into their profits, so you have to stick with the hamburgers or hotdogs under the red light. Not the best, but definitely nostalgic! Quote
Annabelli Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 I can remember going to the drive-in movies in the early 60's and like all has said it was fun. But when crime took over, we stopped going. The movies that I remember seeing at the drive-in's were John Wayne, Sean Connery...007's, and Bob Hope/Bing Crosby. When was it...maybe late 60's when the TV networks started airing movies on TV. We have one of those cable diner's here and a couple of years ago it was sold. The new owners added a dining room building and stucco'd the whole structure. There are a lot of restaurants that hang pictures of the original business back when. Some of them rebuilt because of fire, tornado's, etc. Always makes interesting conversation when you are waiting for your order. Quote
