Well...let's put it this way. It's been over 30 years since I went to seminary but I loved every minute of it. Even having to be there at 6:00 in the morning to attend. Always made my day go much better.

I have to admit that I'm very upset about seminary this year. Our school district has moved back the start time for HS from 7:30 to 8:30, but because of the need for our seminary teachers to work we still have to have seminary start at 6am. While this is fine with me and I don't mind driving the kids to and from seminary, my husband absolutely refuses to allow them to just "hang out" between seminary and school. I while I give him the logical solution that I can pick them up, bring them home, they can finish getting ready and hop on the bus, that is not a good answer for him. So now my children are not "allowed" to go to seminary and it breaks my heart because at least one of them really wants to go. What can I do? Should I just disregard his adamant refusal and take them as was my original plan? So far I've decided not to fight it because it's just too much stress, but really I think it's ridiculous. well, thanks for letting me vent and if anyone has any good input for me...i'd really appreciate it.

I only attended for one year, and I regret not going the full four. But, I had started doing AP classes my Sophmore year, and 5:00am was a little too early for a high-school mind to be sitting listening to theology.

I am observing many HS'ers using their attendance in Seminary and Church Programs as leverage in getting what they want from their parents and I am not talking about material things. Some of them use it as an excuse for not getting their homework done or studying for test.

I think that using Seminary as an excuse not to participate in a school service program is ridiculous. If you cannot take a day off from Seminary to help set up folding chairs for a memorial service for a fallen student what are you getting out of Seminary?

Our HS and many others across the nation offer before school bible study programs at 6:00 a.m. HS's also offer a number of academic classes that students can take at 7:00 a.m. So Seminary students are not the "only" kids getting up early.

Now if you ask Seminary students to attend Seminary in the evening at 6:30 or 7:00 p.m., I think that would be making a sacrifice.

I think perhaps seminary is not helpful for many young people due to it's schedule.

When I was younger and went to seminary, I would not be able to remember a thing the next day, I was just too tired.

And it wasn't as if I went to bed super late.

Scientists everywhere agree that teenagers need 9 hours of sleep each night to preform to the best of their abilities.

I think the way institute is set up is much more beneficial, and remember getting a lot more out of it, even though I did graduate 4 years of seminary.

i dont really have a problem with gettin up early. however im my seminary class there are students who disrupt the class and when the teacher tells them to move they flat out tell him no. its pretty sad.

There should be a "no tolerance" policy for student behavior in Seminary. In cases like this the Seminary teacher should be able to call the parent to pick up their child. If no parent is available, the teacher should be able to call their home teacher, counselor, or bishop to have them escorted out of class.

Since there is a high value placed on a Seminary Certificate, I think this would strengthen the program.

funny thing there... the #1 talker is the bishops daughter and they know she has those problems. she was kiked out of seminary for 3 weeks one year

My husband and I taught early morning seminary in our home for a couple of years.

The second year we had a class that had some very rude and disruptive students.

They were spoiling it for the others who were trying to behave.

There were repeated episodes of ignoring requests to behave (over many days and weeks).

I began removing the misbehaving ones from the class and would simply send them home.

Alternatively, they could catch the bus to their local schools outside our home.

This was supported by our regional CES supervisors.

They recommended ejecting the few to save the atmosphere for the rest of the class.

Enough was enough.

im quite lucky really as i get to be taught at home by my mum, because i couldnt make it out to college on time if i went to the seminary class in my area. i have it at 6:30 am every morning and so far i'm really enjoying it :) much more than the last two years anyway. did anybody else find doctrine and covenants not as interesting? (not meaning to say its rubbish or anything, just not as exciting as the Book of Mormon, for example?)

I understand what you are saying with the sleep deprivation that is so prevalent today. However back when I went...I noticed my school day didn't go as well on the days that I "skipped" seminary. It just seemed to give me that nudge to do well with the rest of my day.

I have been a seminary teacher for several years and I see my seminary students every weekday morning at 5:45am. I have also seen how the world has changed in the past 15 years since i graduated high school. I think this kind of statement is very harmful. With this train of thought you could even say that sacrament meeting is not very helpful because it means we have to get up early on Sunday. It is "slippery Slope" thinking. Seminary not only provides a place to learn the scriptures, but even more importantly, it is a place the Spirit of the Lord can teach us things. It is not a social club, it is not an activity meeting, it is not a breakfast club. It is literally a classroom for the Spirit. I have seen so many youth pass through my classroom and some may not have had the best experience. Some have just decided to stop coming and most of those that stop coming, also stop coming to church as well. I have also seen the students sacrifice their precious time to the Lord and make changes in their lives, Not because of anything I did as a teacher, but because the spirit touched their hearts. Seminary IS VITAL for the spiritual well being of our youth today. When they go to seminary and study the scriptures they literally put on "the armour of God" so that the fiery darts of the adversary that they face everyday cannot pierce them.

im seminary class president. and i think im learning a lot this year about responsibility and my influence on those in the class.

It's actually interesting in some of the discussions to hear what people think about different things in the old testament

I ADORE seminary. It is by far my favorite class. And, I got the shock of a lifetime, my teacher called me as the president. It's amazing how a calling can change your perspective.

Here is my story.....I was class President during my Junior yr of high school. I have no idea why I was called especially during my JR year. I came across an answer sheet for seminary that year and I got caught cheating. The way I got caught was....the answer sheet had some mistakes on it and if I had read the questions I would have caught it.....so I got fired or impeached whatever you want to call it.......
