a-train Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 In those essays, students researched that he and his father were gold diggers, and also that he would read out of his hat to block the sunlight. That is just what it said in essays from other members of the church though. That just means that not all members believe this false.I am aware of the indications that Joseph was unable to use the stones in their frames and that he placed them in a hat. However, I have never seen even the slightest indication that he placed the plates in a hat. Also, the various attempts to describe how the Urim and Thummim operated have conflictions. There is at least one attempt that holds that Joseph saw english words in the stones, however there is much indication that the process was far from that simple and we do not get that notion from Joseph or those directly involved in the translation. The OT indicates that the Urim and Thummim possessed by the ancient Israelites operated similar to casting lots. We also have such an indication from Joseph Smith concerning those he used.A lot of good intending LDS people have speculated many things, but we must appreciate that for what it is: speculation. Princess3dward Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 Of course. I just refuse to join a religious organization because of it though. I can believe what I want. I don't need help from other people to tell me what I believe. They can present their ideas, and I can agree or disagree. Quote
