okay to those that have read through the book of mormon more than once..how many times have you read the holy bible?

I still haven't really read the whole thing all the way through yet- I know I need to. That was a prick to my conscience when I read that. :)

Maybe he's from Finland and has just finished reading the Finnish translation of the BOM :P

Hehe... I just LOVE that book! No matter language! :D But it is good to have it in a couple of languages, the translations may wary... only in fewplacesand the english one kindof clares it.

Vanhin HALFfinnished i finnish.. siis puoliksi luettu??!! oioi!! Now is time to read it all! In finnish or you will never be finnished!:P

Well I am whole finnish and not finnished yet... I hope

Actually not so much finnishing in that book it has already the land of thousand lakes... even "sisu" is there (Stubborness).. strong, handsome menand beautiful wemen too.. Olipa kerran suo kuokka ja Jussi...siihen se kai olisi jäänytkin, jos ei olisi ollut tuota sisua (onceupon a time there was marshland, hack and Jussi... and there is would have eneded, if there had not been sisu!) Sisu is also a strong licorice candy... this was from the comercial...

Probably more times than I've read the Book of Mormon as I read it often before I'd even heard of the BoM and now read both. At the moment I'm reading the BoM alone and the OT with my daughter. We're in Daniel which is one of my favourite bits.

I can feel the excitement in your post Hoosierguy. That was how I felt when I first read it and wanted to read again to go over bits I'd maybe missed. It never ceases to amaze me how much more I can get out of reading the scriptures. There's always something new to learn.

of those of you that have read the bible more then once. How many of you then have taken it and done just a study on it one book at a time. Taking your time to digest just one book at a time and not reading it to get through it.

asking yourself these kind of questions after each chapter..

Who is the author?

When was it written? Who is the author writing to?

Are there any promises to be made?

Are there any comparison or contrasts to be observed?

How does this chapter apply to me?

Cross reference to other parts of the bible to get an idea if the idea was expressed somewhere else?

Just a couple of questions of suggestions. There may be more even better thoughtful questions.

I think I understand what you are trying to suggest. Let me assure you that the above process is as familiar to us as eating cold cereal every morning. :) It is very much a common basic of our study. You will see an added emphasis to the BofM. There are reasons for that. And, the way our scriptures are printed.... they cross-reference the bible and vise versa. We have prolly said it before, but the two books of scripture work in tandem.

Speaking of the Bible, this past year was the study of the NT. Our gospel doctrine teacher laid it all out it such a way that was so wonderful. I wish I could share all of it with you. His lessons really brought so much of it to life for me. I love it more than I did before. Understanding that culture and what was happening inside that very diverse Jewish/gentile mix is simple fascinating. And then understanding better the life of the Savior....I can't even express........

Excellent question. I think that's valid for all scripture study. Sometimes we can get lost in the 'hey I've read the Bible/Book of Mormon x number of times' stuff without getting into it and really studying it.

That's one of the reasons why I love the cross references and footnotes in the LDS scriptures. They can be a great help and sometimes maybe instead of reading a whole chapter I end up just in a few verses really getting into it and finding out the who where which and what.

It also pays to read things in context though and not just pick out snippets which can be tempting. When you take the story or subject in its proper context and setting there is much more to understand.

I did a Relief Society lesson yesterday based on a conference talk about the manual 'Preach My Gospel' and how that is a great personal study aid as well as missionary tool etc. If anybody hasn't got a copy I encourage you to get one and read it, or to read it online. It's brilliant, really makes you think for yourself.

I have actually read the Bible more than the Book of Mormon. I am looking forward to reading and teaching the New Testament next year in seminary.

wow, are you sure you haven't visited an early morning seminary class or an institute class? Those are questions we talk about every day in my seminary class.

Great Questions. Thanks!

and Hoosier, you are awesome. Your enthusiasm is infectious! Keep up the great work.
