  1. I'm not referring to that one. That's a global handbook. I'm referring to the local mission handbook, the one that introduces missionaries to the area and explains local mission rules, just for that mission. The ones for the local missions here say that caffeinated drinks are banned. I don't know whether what you did is bending the rules or whether napping is an acceptable thing to do on preperation day, however many missionaries just don't get up on time at all. This is considered normal among many of them. A lot of mission presidents turn a blind eye to it as well.
  2. Haha, I hate to break it to you, but the rule is there to protect them more than it is to protect the woman. Yes, it is there to protect the woman as well, but the primary purpose is in case the woman takes legal action against them and falsely accusing them of doing something against the law to her while they were there on church business. The third party priesthood holder is there as a witness that nothing actually happened.
  3. The mission handbooks I've seen specifically state they are not to drink caffeinated drinks. But as I said, those handbooks were designed for those specific missions. Each mission president to his own I guess. However, to say that because a missionary (or even several missionaries) do something does not necessarily mean it is allowed. A very commonly disobeyed rule is getting up at 6:30am on P-Days (like every other day) . This applies in most missions, unless the local mission president has good reason to change it for his area. However a great deal of missionaries have a lie in on P-Day. I used to believe it was allowed due to the amount that did it, but it isn't. There are actually few missionaires who obey every rule down to a T throughout the entire two years they are out in the field.
  4. They can in theory go out with "friends", so long as those friends are potential or new converts and the activity they are doing complies with mission rules e.g. cinema is not allowed. Basically, as long as the outing has a "missionary" purpose to it, they can do it. The same applies for ward activities, they won't normally go unless invited, authorised to by the mission president, or have a potential convert going. However, dating is completely out of the question. They always have to be in sight of their companion and cannot be alone with a member of the opposite sex. There always has to be another priesthood holder there.
  5. Providing the media (whether it be a picture, text or video etc.) has a link to it's original location and/or crediting the author, the material being here is not used to make money for the owners of this website (which it isn't) and doesn't cause substantial financial loss to the copyright holder due to being published here, there is no real legal footing to have the content removed from this website.
  6. Most harmful effects from caffeine are when it's taken to excess, like anything else really. Everything that we need to live has to be taken in moderation, otherwise it's bad for us. I drink a small bottle of coke about two times a week when I sometimes arrive at work feeling tired. It wakes me up and I'm able to work and focus properly then. I've been drinking it like this for years and have never felt withdrawal symptoms when I sometimes go for weeks or even months at a time without it and I've never had sleepless nights/restless days which could even potentially be blamed on caffeine consumption. Missionaries are generally banned from drinking coke / pepsi / dr pepper (at least in the missions around here), buts that is simply to please those members who disagree with drinking it, not because it is church doctrine.
  7. Well another possibilty is for the forum operator to install youtube tags, which embed the video into the forum. Of course, it will probably provide a link to the youtube page with the video on by default as well, but as I've said previously, if you really don't want to see bad language, the internet is not for you and you should restrict yourself to a whitelist of LDS owned websites. If you click a youtube link on this forum somewhere, you should really expect to see some kind of bad language in the comments, particularly an LDS/religion focused video as you know that the person who posted the link has no control over the comments and youtube do not monitor them. If the moderators removed every youtube link which has bad language in the comments, they might as well ban youtube links completely as the comments are constantly being added.
  8. Lol he reminded me a bit of my grandad. He died back in 2005 but in the couple of years before his death and had to use a walking stick (cane as you call it) and he would have sword fights with his younger grandchildren with it. It's funny how some old people get bitter about their disabilities as they get older and others just find the funny side of everything. President Hinckley was one of the latter group.
  9. The REAL name for American football is gridiron Oh dear, this is going to be a UK/most of the world vs USA/Canada thing isn't it?
  10. I don't think anyone could disagree what the REAL football is Which type of FOOTball do you use your feet the most? Football or American football? I rest my case
  11. The answer is yes, they do. In fact the church has an entire security department which deals with all sorts of security related issues regarding the church. The first presidency all have trained bodyguards and the security department also deal with things like printable temple recommends off the internet, looking into a countries security details and risk areas before sending high profile members over there and investigating cases of missionaries who are in danger. A lot of the security department is actually voluntary, however those protecting high risk areas (such as the first presidency directly) will be paid and highly trained. They also indrectly oversee security of high profile church buildings, such as temples. Though each temple has an on site security team, they coordinate with the main security department of the church. Hope this helps. EDIT: Just thought I'd add, they only have the best protecting the first presidency. Yes, they are all church members and they all believe that the people they are protecting are more important than the president of the USA himself and would do anything in order to protect them as they are Gods servants. The secret service have no such feelings to the people they protect. They do it because they have to.
  12. Lol, I get the same problem. Some of my views on things can be quite controversial in nature and I get the same blank looks. Though I do still go to church, I have trouble just accepting some church rules - I have to question everything, which isn't the type of person who fits into an ideal LDS setting. This also partly explains why I left my mission 14 months prematurely - I had issues with certain rules I was given and was expected to obey without question. Again, not the ideal personality for a missionary. Oh course people now judge me based on both of those facts, that I left my mission early and that I always have to know why, even when it came from the first presidency. As much as the church deny this (as they don't do it officially), the membership is taught to effectively look down on those who didn't serve "honourable" missions by a lot of church teachers. There is obviously much more than this as well. As people have said, anything which doesn't fit into an ideal lds family setting is shunned by a lot of the membership.
  13. I never do this, simply because I don't see the logic in it. You have all talks word for word on the interweb not long after the talks have taken place. Maybe it's just my aspergers syndrome causing me to have this view, but this is how I see it: If you takes notes as you are watching it, you are missing what is being said as you are writing. Plus you only get to write down little bits. It seems more sensible to me to sit and listen to the talks without trying to multitask. There are church employees who will play the talks back and write it down word for word and put it on the church website, so if you liked bits, you can go back and find it later to make a note of it them. As for me, I'll most likely watch them online. I find the metal chairs in our stake centre are extremely uncomfortable causing me to fidget. We don't have BYU TV at home so instead I'll probably find a way to push the stream to our TV over our network from the internet so I don't have to sit in front of the computer.
  14. Three things: - Did you try clearing your cache? - No, I wouldn't be silly enough to ask you to post personal information on a public forum - the logs are basically system information but nothing that could be considered really personal such as passwords or internet history :) - If it happens on this website and not on others, it could also be something on the route the data takes between your computer and the servers of this website. Obviously everyone on this website lives in different areas of the globe and every website is hosted on a different server elsewhere on the globe. So the route the data takes through all the backbone cables, routers and servers will be different for each person and website. So it could be that the route the data takes for you personally, there is dodgy router or server somewhere. This possibilty, while unlikely, I have known to happen on more than one occasion and it causes nightmares for both the server operator and end user trying to find out whats going on.
  15. If webroot acts as a firewall (which it seems it does), then yes, you'll likely have to reinstall it. But why did it take a day to install? Was that due to having to download it over a dialup connection? In that case, I can understand your frustration - if you kept the installation file, you won't need to have to download it again though. However clearing your cache and cookies won't require you to reinstall. In firefox, click on Tools >> Clear private data and then select all available tick boxes. Alternatively, you can just download cccleaner which should do all that for you - it is a useful piece of software as Mike said. However if doing that doesn't work, something else I can suggest which should show us whether you are really infected with a virus or not is to download and run http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html . When you download that, open it, extract it to your desktop and then run the extracted file. Tell it to create a log then copy and paste that log here. This will tell us all the processes that are running on your PC and also all the potentially suspicous activites such as auto loading registry keys. We can take a look and tell you whether you are infected or not. WARNING: Do NOT tell it to "fix" any processes until we tell you to. Most of them will be legitimate, if not all of them, and deleting the wrong ones could screw up your computer. The other potential problem is noise on your phone line. It's quite common with dialup and causes all sorts of connection problems. If you live in the woods with no close neighbours then it's likely your line has to travel some distance, and you may end up having to contact the phone company to ask them to do a test on it.
  16. Sensible way of looking at it :) I don't like windows - it was designed from the ground up to be user friendly, though to do that they sacrificed security. This was acceptable before the internet became common place in homes, floppy discs were the most likely source of a virus and therefore involved social engineering to get the user to run a program from the disc. However Microsoft have been dragging their feet in changing their methods - hence why a plain old XP installation without extra user added security will get infected in seconds when connected to the internet yet an unprotected linux box went months in a honeypot test I read up on. With vista, they attempted to copy some linux security features, but in the only way I can put it without using language against this forum rules, they screwed up big time - lets hope windows 7 is what vista should have been and the "wow" really is coming :) As a side note, I use a live linux CD (knoppix) for any important data I need to enter into my computer to send over the internet, like bank details - much less risk then doing it on a windows computer.
  17. Good points Mike, I was steering towards it being a more of a network issue, though you are correct in saying most people don't normally know how to share dialup.
  18. I tested this myself once about five years ago. Took less than 10 seconds before I noticed unusual behaviour and found none standard processes running
  19. Agree with first point, though googling those errors is unlikely to come up with direct solution as there are 1000's of things that can cause that error. Are you sharing the internet connect on a home network? Are you on a wireless network? Do you have any local network issues like being disconnected every now and then? Vista is well known for wireless problems - in fact vista has so many problems and my network at home is probably more complicated than most so I needed the connection to be perfect, I got rid of vista completely and went back to XP - been fine ever since. Again, if you have a wireless network, there could be interference with another wireless network in the local area on the same channel. Depending on how your network is set up, there could be IP conflicts, though to be honest, if you have a router/access point, most have DHCP enabled by default nowadays which prevent the user having to mess with IP settings. Does it happen on just your computer, or other computers on the local network as well (if you have a network?) If could also be noise on your phone line. Does your internet connection get disconnected spontaneously? You might want to get the phone company to run a test on the phone line.
  20. Google video has by default a moderate safe search enabled, youtube does not. Instead, logged in users just have to confirm their birth date before they can watch videos flagged as not suitable for minors. That said, as google owns youtube, in theory all youtube videos are displayed in google video as well - you just have to hope the filter holds out with the millions of new videos that are being uploaded each day both on youtube and all other websites that google spiders. Personally I would create my own website to host videos with sensitive topics like this, as you can never be 100% sure what other videos will be automatically suggested on popular video sharing websites.
  21. Had this problem at work on multiple computers using windows XP and internet explorer 6 and 7. Not had chance to look into exactly what causes it yet, however for us, a hard refresh on the video page normally solves it - I suspect it's actually a problem with youtube and certain versions of flash as I've not come across any other websites that have flash that are affected. To do a hard refresh, simply load up the page which tells you that you need the latest version of flash player, then press CTRL and F5 on your keyboard at the same time. You may need to do it a couple of times. Let me know if this works - this solution is particularly likely to solve the problem if some videos on youtube work and others don't.
  22. I'm not a mod, but personally, I'd say go for it. It'd be silly to say no because the owner and moderators of this website have no control over the content of external links, therefore they could be edited to include vulgar content even if it appears to be 100% clean at the time of posting. In my opinion, just use common sense before posting a link. If someone gets offended by seeing some bad language after clicking on an external link, they shouldn't be using the internet. You can reasonably expect to come across bad language if you do much browsing.
  23. There is a way to solve the problem. Just don't feed the trolls. You should put this smilie in the forums main smilies. Feeding the trolls includes replying to an obvious attempt at causing contention or baiting them in any way. Some people find it fun to do this, but to others it's just annoying. It's downhearting to go to the effort to cause something to happen and it doesn't happen, so you don't bother doing it again. The same applies here. Another way is to hijack the thread. In future, lets change any troll thread into a discussion about biscuits :)
  24. Just thuoght I'd post a couple of my own thoughts on here. While job hunting can be depressing and stressful, see it as a full time job. Don't see yourself as unemployed and get into the habit of getting up at lunchtime, taking two hours to get washed and dressed, watch TV for an hour and before you know it the day has gone. A lot of jobs you work from 9 - 5, so between those hours, you should spend the time looking for jobs. It's boring filling out the same details again and again, but it'll pay off eventually. Make sure your CV (resume as I think you Americans call it) looks good. Remember employers often get hundreds of CVs for a job, you really want yours to stand out. Any spelling mistakes / bad layouts / too many pages to read through and it'll get chucked straight in the bin. They don't have time to think about and consider each application in detail in the initial stages, so make sure yours really stands out. If you take Beccas advice, and go into the company / organisation and look for jobs, make sure you look good. I've had people come to me asking me to ask my manager about jobs who have curry stains down their top, shirts untucked, messy shoes etc. It doesn't look good at all. And don't make the mistake I did once and leave your phone on... I wasn't going to an interview, but I was enquiring about a job with a manager and my phone rang twice. We all have our bad days, but make sure it's not on a day you are asking about jobs. The same applies for interviews obviously. You should do some voluntary work. It's difficult enough looking for jobs in current circumstances, let alone when are aren't currently employed already. So if you are volunteering somewhere, at least a perspective employer will realise you are not lazy and are willing to work - plus it gives you experience.
  25. In my experience of people with addictions, you cannot solve the problem by controlling them. They'll become aggressive, search continually to find other ways of feeding their addiction and as soon as she is allowed access to any money she'll just go and spend again. The problem needs to be solved through a psychiatrist, not through brute force. She needs to decide herself to stop, not someone else deciding for her. You try and force her, one way or another it'll end up in separation IMO.
