  1. Thanks found a video about AI and genealogy will watch after work. You provided way more helpful information than an hour long meeting.
  2. So for the past 2 months I have received 3-4 emails and 3-4 verbal reminders from the ward leaders that I need to attend the following meeting as a representative of the Elders Quorum. "Hi all, just a reminder that the Temple And Family History training is today at 2:00 in the Red Bluff building. The training is for all temple and family history specialists and the councilors in both Elders Quorum and Relief Society that are responsible for temple and family history work." Turns out that the meeting is being taught by a married couple from the big city (Sacramento 1.5 hours south of me). And that they have given the presentation multiple times before coming to our ward. Anyway, the husband of the couple sat down the entire lesson and gave occasional support while the wife gave the presentation which had nothing to do with Family History training. It was more of family history awareness mostly with statistics and occasional general authority quotes. During the entire 45 min presentation, I'm thinking when are we getting to the content of this meeting. When she asked for questions I asked if there was any training in this training meeting. Handout? Could she direct me to a website? Are there any YouTube tutorial channels that can teach family history for dummies? At about my 3rd question she started to get irritated with me (I later recognized as I can sometimes interpret social queues incorrectly). Her recommendations were to have one of the youth in the ward teach me as the youth are good with computers. Or that I should create a youtube channel. My wife tells me that the husband appeared furious with my badgering but I totally missed that as well. Three of the attendants of the meeting (including our Stake President) tried to mollify both parties while also requesting some sort of practical direction. I eventually found the website https://www.familysearch.org/en/fieldops/article/family-tree-basics and I plan to go over it sometime this week. I texted the website to multiple attendees at the meeting, at their request, and received text messages after the meeting thanking me for my input. Looking for recommendations. In the future when I am requested to go to a training meeting I will request an agenda with goals and material that I can review prior to the meeting to make the sessions more productive.
  3. A long time ago I put together two concepts that helped me reason why to act and do the right thing 1) Concept that our motivation for why we act is more important sometimes than the act itself. From a BYU speech of Dallin Oaks 1998 - Why do we serve at BYU? He listed the follow reason “in ascending order from the lesser to the greater.” a) For riches or honor b) To obtain good companionship c) Fear of punishment d) Duty or loyalty e) Hope of an eternal reward f) Love of God and fellowman 2) D&C 19:7 Again, it is written eternal damnation; wherefore it is more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men, altogether for my name’s glory. The above scripture, to me, means that God called punishment eternal so that men might be motivated by what Dallin Oaks listed as (c. Fear of punishment). But if we learn to love and trust God, we will not need to act out of fear of punishment or hope for a reward. So I don’t. I don’t worry about Hell. I don’t hope for the Celestial Kingdom. I try to do the right thing for the right reasons. And I trust God. It has always worked out for me. When I heard Mossimo De Feo’s conference talk - Rise! He Calleth Thee. I reflected that we have had very similar point’s of view. Especially the prelude to his talk - Some time ago I asked my wife, “Can you tell me why, as far as I remember, we have never had any major problems in our lives?” She looked at me and said, “Sure. I’ll tell you why we have never had any major problems; it’s because you have a very short memory!”
  4. computers just collate records. They don't have feelings or spirituality. Obviously, you can have feelings and spiritual reactions from data but that doesn't have anything to do with the compiling of the data.
  5. AI is just better computing power and programming. It is very good at putting together puzzles and finding solutions. Genealogy seems a perfect fit. We are not trying to get into any personal information and it doesn't really have anything to do with spirituality. Just record keeping and clarification of family trees. In the USA - Birth, death, and marriage records become public records after a certain period of time, which varies by state. Typically, birth records become public after 100 years, death records after 50-75 years, and marriage records after 50 years.
  6. I think the hardest part will be digitizing the records in our country first then getting into foreign countries. By the time we have a good database quantum computers might be online.
  7. Still waiting for someone with a good background in genealogy and computers to help me out.
  8. I know there are legal issues, HIPPA, companies making money off genealogy, etc. Every once in a while I check the family tree / ancestry app and there will be a message from an unhinged person complaining that my mom’s info is wrong and to stop making changes. We have the documentation and pictures.
  9. Yeah, Im kinda reluctant to spend a whole lot of time and energy linking a chain that a computer and lab can knock out in seconds. I figure the sooner we get a jump on it the better. Apparently we still have microfilm in our libraries. Digitize everything. Take the $$ we would spend on a temple or 2 and get a records department set up.
  10. I had an hour meeting yesterday on family search that was a complete waste of time. I might rant about it later… Anyways, my mother did 5-6 generations of my tree. But I haven't done much personally. I plan to make it a hobby upon retirement. And might be able to retire early. The question is, why doesn’t the church invest in AI, do some fancy programming and let it go HAM on the world family tree?
  11. I linked it for the results of the 2nd day of the T&F olympic trials. The format is crazy. 10 days for a track meet? The stands are empty. I understand that they want to mimic the pace of the olympics but it is pretty boring compared to a 2-3 day meet. And the field of athletes is too big. Who wants to run 4 qualifying rounds of the 400 meters? The Eugene stadium is beautiful though. Heath Baldwin a 23 y/o from Michigan State won the decathlon. Nice marks across the board. 100m 10.85 long jump 7.46 or 24-5¾ Shot put 16.52 or 55-2 1/2 High jump 2.13 or 6-11¾ 400m 48.58 110H 13.77 Discus 43.67 or 143-3 Pole Vault 4.85 or 15-11 Javelin 66.69 or 218-9 1500m 4:41.87. Total points 8,625

  13. The loan and banking system is way more confusing and shifty than one would think. 1) Compound vs. simple interest 2) Annual percentage rate is a big freakin lie - it is usually calculated monthly (or even daily). This makes a big difference. 3) Points 4) Mortgage Insurance Premium It goes on and on.
  14. All the original numbers were correct. So, downpayment has nothing to do with the loan calculation. It’s there so the bank can make some money if the home is repossessed and encourages the consumer to not default on the loan. My father was a gov employee and likely qualified for a 5-10% down loan. The calculator that you linked is a lie. It is a marketing tool. It requires a zip code to use, and inserts property tax and insurance. I may have to go re-czech my genealogy. Maybe I do have some asian in me after all. The loan that my father obtained required him to pay $205,779 in interest. As the interest goes up, it does seem criminal. I agree. A 13% loan seems outrageous to you, but the average interest rate of new credit cards today is 24%. @Traveler has a point.
  15. Dude, Americans are good at maths.
  16. Dad passed 5 years ago still miss him badly. (Daddy taking care of me as I was quite sea-sick) Yeah, I omitted the down payment to simplify. The HP48 don’t lie though. The real sin is setting up a 30 year loan, preparing the payment slips and not going over the complicated math with a simple honest man. If you cant afford a 10-15 year loan you probably shouldn’t buy that house. And the benefits of early extra payments cannot be overstated. See also - OPEC, Jimmy Carter
  17. Likely because Lucifer and his host hadn’t had the time and devotion to sink to this level of pure evil. When I learned about interest and sat down with my father and discussed our home's 13% 30 year loan I was horrified. 69K home Payment $ 763 First year you pay off $200 of the principal?! Back then I associated $20 with mowing a single yard.
  18. Deut 23:20 Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
  19. Yup Jan Železný GOAT. This is my great-great grandfather. You would think that I had javelin throwing in my blood. Nope, one of my worst events.
  20. In 1986 they moved the center of gravity 4” forward to shorten the javelin flight because it was starting to become an audience participation sport. 😯
  21. Well too bad he wasn’t a long jumper. If so he would have known. It is the most important part of the jump. If done right, it allows you to feel like you are jumping off a ramp. Rookie. Don’t feel bad. I would have lit him up. Carl Lewis makes it look easy. He did it naturally. I had to learn.
  22. BoM - going to be stranded on a deserted island and I get to take one book. This is the one. PoGP - So much info in a tiny package. Well named. If I had to choose the OT vs PoGP I take the pearl. Plus Moses 1. No wonder Lucifer had it removed. NT - My love affair with this book has rekindled over the years. Jesus Christ is just the best. OT - Makes me wish I had learned Hebrew. Good reference material. usually my last resort.
  23. I think its some of both - but heavily weighted toward spiritual intelligence Sometimes when I look at the world around me, I surmise that I will be way, WAY ahead of many of the knuckleheads. Then I compare myself to people like Boyd Packer, Clayton Christensen, or Neal Maxwell and then I recognize that I gots a lot of work to do. I may be 3+ standard deviations above the mean. But when you see someone that is 6+ SD you are truly amazed.
  24. Strength, agility, and beauty are fleeting. Wit and intellect just keep getting better (almost until the bitter end). D&C 130:18 Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. 19 And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.
