I have never read the book but have thoroughly reviewed the movie numerous times. I have come up with the following conclusions. The movie probably has about 70-100, or so, different points to it. The 7 minute cartoon is probably the most controversial. Many of the controversial points are called lies but I don't think I have ever seen a mormon actively show how they are lies. In fact the vast majority of what the video accuses the mormon church of, is more than somewhat accurate. I have not thoroughly reviewed every aspect of the film with mormons, but all the points that I have reviewed i have found to have a large degree of truth to it. The portions I have found to be inaccurate are where the narrorator says "mormons believe......". Often it actually is in a situation where a mormon prophet has stated something that they want others to believe as the word of God. Such examples are the Adam-God theory, and Joseph Smith being more important than Jesus. Many mormons act like because a certain theory or practice isn't held today, then that means it wasn't true at some point in time. I think the real reason that "The Godmakers" is hated so much by mormons is because the light that is paints the LDS church in. It destroys the public image of mormonism that many have worked so hard to try and attain. Though I must say that I have seen what many mormons are really like when they discuss the Godmakers. I have seen the bitterness, anger, and resentfulness that some are walking with that they seem to be able to hide most of the time. The Godmakers is more accurate than most mormons will ever want to admit.

Because the LDS church is more of a business than a church.
-
Do you have any children now?
-
My opinion is that many of your prophets/presidents have tried to control you. This is one of the petty things that lead me to believe that. Whether you use birth control is not the business, nor the decision, of your church leaders. Anybody who would demand such a thing from you has violated your boundaries because this is not their business. Personally, my wife and I use birth control because we are just not ready to handle another child yet. I work shifts and she is with our son much of the time. My church leaders do not have the sleepless nights like we have, nor have to do the worrying. I could not give another child the attention that they would need. I think your church leaders are more concerned with gaining more members than they are with your well-being. And I bet they'd condemn you if you did have more children and you weren't giving 10% of your money to them.

Reason For Priesthod Ban Being Lifted

Do you only come here to pick fights? Go away. -
Well what exactly are you trying to accomplish with this thread?

Galatians was indeed written about 10 years before the first gospel. However that was only the writing date. The stories of the gospels had been present long before the gospels were penned. Paul learned the gospel from the people who had been preaching it (directly and indirectly) since Christ was crucified. And take a look at what Paul writes, the vast majority of it is an enhancement of the gospels and not new material. It makes the gospels clearer and easier to understand. The scriptures in Galatians are also very specific about what to be weary of. Galatians states what specific things to watch out for, not just a vague statement to be weary of new doctrines. Galatians did refer to a specific problem for a specific people group. However if I were to tell Outshined about a 6'2 218 lb man wearing a black bandana who liked to fight people who look at his girlfriend, would you not be a little weary of a 6'2 218 lb man with a black bandana? Paul was preaching to specific people, but that doesn't mean it's not applicable elsewhere. the scripture in Galatians isn't specific direction, but rather a warning. Warnings are different than specific instruction in practicing faith.

Reason For Priesthod Ban Being Lifted

True, but this wasn't a revelation. It was a smart and logical move by good businessmen. -
Always looking for a fight huh? Grow up.

No matter how clear any piece of scripture is, there will be people who will try and make that scripture say what they want it to say. They call it "interpretation". Though some of the bible does require an interpretation, the parts that do require interpretation are usually relatively minor issues (unless you consider women wearing head coverings in church to be major).

If your church really doesn't take a stance of the WoW, then why do many mormons treat it as though it came from the mouth of God which must be obeyed without exception?
-
You have got to be kidding me?! Why is it ok when you do it but not ok for others to do it? Of all the people to complain about something like this, you have the least amount of credibility.
-
snow, your opinion is not required.

You consider a cup of coffee, a mars bar and a coke to be on the same level as adultery and cocaine? According to whom? Ok, their personal opinions are one thing but why would one human being live their life according to the will of another human being that has nothing invested in them personally. Yes, I can go a day without aritificial chemicals like caffeine. I enjoy many things in moderation. I like beer, wings, steak, bar-b-q, and many other things. One of my first medic trainers once told me that if people eat too well then their immune systems will not know how to fight off disease, and we will pass that down to our kids. That is a big reason why my wife and I do not drink bottled water.

This discussion reminds me of the movie SWAT. Those of you who saw it will likely remember the guy in the "cage" who converted to mormonism. The guy was always sneaking Dr Peppers and was accused of cheating on his wife with fast foods. Why deny yourself something pleasurable if it's harmless? Read meats, white bread, and many other wonderful tasting foods are bad for you too. If you're going to try and eat healthy, at least go all the way. And do if because you want to, not because your church has a policy.
-
And why would that be?
-
I thought the same thing when i first read what Brigham Young was like.
-
How is that relevant? Does that mean that because mormons were once attacked then they have the right to attack whoever they choose? And Smith was the way he was because he was raised in a culture that people believed they were better than others (that could be why he created such an elitist religion). That is quite a claim, you will need to provide a valid source. You are right, racism and bigotry is the issue. No, he'd likely be in jail like the criminal he is.
-
Oh come on!!! How does one see another person as inferior and say they treat them as equals? You are just kidding yourself. Brigham Young didn't burn crosses or wear a white hood but he was still a racist bigot.
-
Cal, I believe they both chose the cross. Jesus made the decision that He was going to stick to His guns and go through with what (I think) He knew was going to happen to Him. And obviously the Romans would use the cross, their preferred method of execution to enemies of the gov't, on Jesus. I don't know if this answers your question or not.
-
"No" would have done just fine.

You are correct. I need to make myself much clearer. Depression is not natural, but it has become normal in many people. When my wife had our son she was the reason I kept my sanity. I could not have imagined her being any better. Her attitude and joy was natural and authentic. But then again that is the biggest reason I made her my wife. I never said my church healed her, because it didn't. My point was that since mormonism is the true church of God, incidents like this should be more abundant in your church if it is God's true church and mine isn't. And I believe there is enough biblical proof for me to state that a person doesn't need to have faith to be healed. If a counterfeit church like mine could do such things, what must the true church be capable of? I know I am not the only one who has experienced something good in life. What better evangelistic tool can there be than genuine healing? I can't think of something that would enhance a mormon testimony, can you? If you were healed of something, would you not share it with me? Well I have noticed that most mormons don't speak any negative words towards the LDS church. Most refuse to admit that fault exists. I like independent sources because they are unbiased, I prefer that when I hear things that happen in my church too. The one time I heard a story about a woman's leg being healed I personally examined the radiology exams, and had a friend do the same, to verify it. What are the things you speak of? The missionary program that people are basically manipulated into by thinking that God favors those who do them over those who don't. And yes I have talked to missionaries that actually believe that nonsense-but most missionaries (all religions) are just running away from home anyways.

Has it ever occured to you to ask Him?
-
A reasonable argument? If we are going by what is reasonable to you then I'd choose not to. I have said it before, I don't want to learn to think like you do.
