  1. My experience with vac sealing my quart jars of anything powdery hasn't been good. When I turn the food vac on it naturally pulls the air out but with it the powder. Even if the jars seal they don't seem to hold it. added..I've had excellent results with everything else and have just decided to use other methods for the powdery things.
  2. I use the vacuum seal for my jars all the time. I put the oxygen absorber in it also. I've read that if you put the jars in a dark, cool place that it will last the same as the cans. The only thing with the jars is that you have to check from time to time to see if the lid is still sealed. My jars have always held the seal except the ones with powdery contents. I bought some seasonings in bulk and some of those jars come unsealed from time to time. Everything else is fine. When I open a #10 can, I always seal what's left over in a jar with an oxygen absorber. I love my food saver jar vacuum sealer. It's great. I've been having fun dehydrating peaches and vegetables and I use jars to store it.
  3. Sometimes when I read posts it seems like we are trying to take away the sovereignty of God. He is God and he is the one who is in control we are not. It's interesting to read what everyone says because there are so many different points of view. God has given free agency but He is still God and is in control of all..period. Nothing is out of his control, imho. Sometimes it sounds like we are putting ourselves in the drivers seat and putting God in the backseat. I was probably raised with a completely different view of God. All of my life I never saw God as Heavenly Father but an all powerful, mighty judge sitting on a throne. When you're raised with that image it affects how you view things I think. One of the most comforting teachings of the LDS Church for me is that God is a loving Heavenly Father. Back to my original thought. I believe that God chooses when we are born and he chooses when we leave this world. I believe that our free agency contributes to how we leave this world but I believe that we still leave when God says we leave. When my mother died in a car accident her best friend was in the car with her and she got a broken leg. Two years later she died of brain cancer. God is in control, He decides. I believe that we can all have our own differing opinions because there are so many things that we will never know for sure until we leave this world. I sure have alot of questions to ask when I get there.
  4. I believe that from the moment we are born we have an appointed time to return to the Father. My parents both died young and left a large family behind. They both died in accidents 2 years apart. I believe that they were here as long as they were intended to be here.
  5. What does a person "twitter" about? I guess I don't understand how it goes. I was thinking it was some kind of step by step journal about what you're doing at the moment. I don't know if I want that kind of visibility into my life. Maybe I've got this thing wrong. What is the purpose of a twitter?
  6. Your profile says you are a man so I assume this blog is your wifes. Am I correct? I think it is hilarious. I really enjoyed it. Such a funny lady.
  7. There are so many places on the internet where you can order for emergency food storage that there are really no excuses for not preparing little by little. I have the Fedx and the big brown truck stopping here often. The internet removes all excuses. Even shipping charges are very low especially when you consider the cost of gas.
  8. It's always about the money. It's alot cheaper to package in cheap plastic than glass or cans. In my opinion everything is made to be replaced within a year. It makes the companies alot more money for you to replace often then to have a quality product that you can have repaired. We've had several in our family buy laptop computers only to have to replace them right after the one year warranty expired. The store had to give me a new laptop just before the one year expired because the screen completely fell off, the keyboard needed to be replaced and I can't remember what else. It's money, money, money and nothing else.
  9. I have a large bedroom that I've converted into a storage room. I have an air conditioner to have the desired temperature and the room is dark. It looks like I have alot because the room is already full but when you consider we have a large family, I doubt it would last very long. Also, I could never turn anyone away if they needed help. So at this point I really don't know how long it will last in an emergency. I have a pretty good 3mo supply of the foods that we normally eat. When it comes to the long term emergency food, I don't know how you can really gauge because you don't really know how many people will be using it. I'm keeping the cases of wheat (I have about 35 cases so far) and the nonfood items in my bedroom to make more room available for more long term food storage in the storage room. When my storage room is filled and I have all that is reasonable in my bedroom, then I have to be finished. I believe that Heavenly Father will bless my efforts and will take care of the rest. I felt very strongly that I was being called to do this and my hubby is very supportive. This has been a spiritual journey for me also. I've learned so much about the teachings of the LDS Church. I must say that I've had alot of criticism and laughing at me regarding this but I felt I needed to be obedient. Our pool table has 7gal water jugs all around it. It doesn't interfere with playing pool and they fit nicely but people do notice and ask questions. I have 14 water jugs so far and when my space runs out for these jugs then I feel that I have enough. My next focus is to continue being obedient to the tithe and start an emergency financial plan. I know there's alot of talk about buying gold but the financial part of it will be my dear husbands department. With all the reading I've done on the teachings by the LDS prophets regarding emergency planning and food storage, I think it odd that every LDS family isn't prepared. I could go on and on about this subject because I find it fascinating but I will not. I'm hoping there will be more post on this subject. There's so much to learn.
  10. I believe that God takes you from where you are and gets you where he wants you to be. It may take baby steps and even going from one denomination to another with gradual spiritual growth. Some people live their whole life in one church but I believe that most don't. We have different needs at different points in our life. I believe that my spiritual journey has been a windy road and as long as the essentials of salvation remain the basis of my faith, I am okay.
  11. I feel very good about the food storage that I have for emergencies. If I waited until I have 6mo living expenses in the bank I would never have this emergency food storage. We all need to do what works for us. Money won't do you any good if there isn't any food in the stores. I know in the past when we had really bad weather the prices of things related to the cold went sky high. I doubt that food would be any different if it was limited. I feel very good about our storage.
  12. I bake two different breads in our bread machine. My son-in-law has diabetes and loves the bread with the Hard Red Wheat and 10 grain cereal added. I also use the Vital Wheat Gluten and Powdered Buttermilk and also the yeast from storage. My household loves a bread with the Hard White Wheat and the 10 grain cereal added.
  13. The recommended quantity for our family is soooooooooo much more than I will ever have. I'm probably sicking to 20 cases of Hard White Wheat and 20 cases of Hard Red Wheat. Short of building a cement store house, we have to consider what we can reasonably store. Actually the weight is one thing I've never really thought about. We live in an old, very solid house though but we will never have enough that we have to worry about that (I don't think). Thanks for bringing that up, I've never even considered the weight.
  14. This size is so nice for bulk. I buy 25lb bags of certain grains for my breadmaker. I fill my large canister in the kitchen with it and the remaining grain is vacuum sealed with an oxygen absorber in these 1/2 gal canning jars. Just make sure to cover the filled jars with a hand towel or something because the stored products are light sensitive. My hand towels cover a case of jars perfectly. I keep the boxes that my jars come in and put the filled ones back in the box and cover it with the hand towel.
  15. Since you are currently living with someone you might want to start with the canned wheat. You don't have to worry about breakage and you can keep the cans in the case and put them under your bed or stack them in a corner of your bedroom. Costco has a case of wheat (6cans) on their website for $39.99 (shipping included). That's a very good price and it's from Shelf Reliance. Here is the link. If it doesn't come up for some reason, just type in Shelf Reliance in the search. Costco - Shelf Reliance THRIVE? Premium Wheat Pack
  16. I believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As far as weather they are the Trinity or 3 separate Gods is a mystery, imho. Anyone who believes in the Trinity doesn't understand what that really means anyway in my opinion. I believe that they all God. I don't think we will ever truly understand these things while we are here earth. It just seems that I'm always correcting friends who think they know what the LDS Church teaches and this afternoon my friend told me that Mormons don't believe that Jesus is divine and I wanted to get my facts straight. I can't believe how misunderstood the LDS Church is. Almost everything that someone tells me is incorrect. I'm always amazed at how ignorant people are about the beliefs of the LDS Church.
  17. I know that the LDS Church doesn't believe in the Trinity. My question is.. Do you believe that they are all three God? God the Father God the Son God the Holy Spirit Does this question make sense? I guess I don't know how to phrase it.
  18. Now this explanation makes sense to me. I believe this and always have. Thanks
  19. I have a Foodsaver that will also vacuum seal canning jars. When I open a #10 can, I put the unused portion in a jar(s) with an oxygen absorber on the top and vacuum seal it. I put the jars in a dark place or cover them with a hand towel. They are still being preserved but are convenient for my use. I love my Foodsaver with the feature for vacuum sealing my canning jars. I use it all the time. Would never be without one.
  20. I can't imagine discussing what goes on in a confessional. A priest or a bishop, they both hear confessions. You make it sound less than spiritual.
  21. Now this is confusing. Are there two different salvations?
  22. In different posts that I've read, there was reference to saving ordinances. Someone said that sealing is a saving ordinance. Could you explain that to me.
  23. This issue doesn't make sense to me. Why would anyone know what surgical procedures you have done. Unless you draw attention to yourself and dress to accentuate it. I don't see why anyone has to know. How do you know what cup size someone else is. Why are you interested anyway. If the woman has some problems for many years with her self confidence and this makes her feel better about herself than who's business is it. Unless she gets implants like Dolly Pardon, I don't see why anyone should be pointing fingers or gossiping about it. Sometimes just buying a good bra can make a big difference. Why would this be something discussed. If I decide to have my teeth whitened, do I have to consider all of the other women in the church that may think this procedure is frivolous? What is I have bunions but they don't bother me physically but I'm self conscious about them and I have them surgically removed. Do I never wear pretty shoes for fear someone might see my beautiful feet and be jealous. In my opinion, this isn't an issue with implants at all but a spiritual issue in the ward that needs to be addressed.
