Titles of Church Leaders
john doe replied to Jason_J's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
If in doubt, you can't go wrong by calling males Brother and females Sister. It even works for children. -
In a word, no. Yes, some leaders at the time taught it and held it up as truth, and I don't doubt that some portions of the idea may be true, but the concept was never really given a definitive structure or form. It was and is difficult for most lay people in and out of the Church to understand or even quantify. Ultimately, it has never been brought before the body of the church and presented to it for consideration or a vote to be considered doctrine and binding on the Church. It is not contained in our scriptures, although some portions may seem to be supported by certain passages of scripture. There is much we don't know about the theory, and much that was not understood fully. It was never really fleshed out to make a coherent understanding of the idea.

Let's remember that the Adam-God Theory is just that, a theory, and is not doctrine of the LDS Church.

Hello. I've been to Orem before.
-
Yeah, you remember the guy. His sig was 'you want fries with that?'.

The only time I use the term atm is when I'm on the way to get money from the bank.

I usually put off the 'please fill out this survey' emails because they really don't mean anything unless you put your contact info down. I think they all go into a very large bucket and are generally meaningless when they do that. However, I have gone to restaurants' websites and filled out forms when they have failed to meet my expectations. I have to say I was very pleased that when In-n-Out Burger put onions on a burger that I had requested not to have onions, they bent over backwards to contact me multiple times, fell over themselves apologizing, and sent me coupons for free meals to convince me to come back and try them again. I was shocked that they responded the very next business day. The store manager even called me twice to make sure I knew that he was going to address the problem. I had a total of 5 calls from them plus emails, all wanting to make sure I was happy with them. McDonald's on the other hand, gravely disappointed me when I got home to find that the bottom half of my burger was not in the box. Someone had to have known that something was amiss when they laid the top half of the burger in the box and the patty was sitting directly on the cardboard. It's not rocket science, it's a burger. I went to McDonald's website and filled out a form, and heard nothing from anybody. No call, no email, nothing. A couple weeks later I got an email survey asking me to rate their response to my complaint. I told them I was very unhappy that no one had contacted me. I never heard from them again. Apparently McDonald's doesn't feel the need to make their customers happy.

I suggest you counsel with your local leaders (bishop and/or Stake President) while in the process of making this important decision. We can all encourage or discourage you in this matter, but ultimately we are not close enough to the situation to give you anything more than generalized advice.

It's thought by many bible scholars that Job was not a real person, but rather the story is more likely to be allegorical.

Can't we all just get along? Let's try to be more tolerant of those who believe differently than we do. Granted, this is an LDS-centric site, but there are many visitors from other faiths here and they are welcome here as long as they follow the same rules and standards that LDS are held to. If you hold a personal opinion that is outside of normal LDS belief and doctrine, please state that it is your personally held belief or the belief of your particular religion. It would behoove all of us to read the site rules linked at the top of almost every page on a regular basis as well.

I guess that depends on your definition of 'petitioning'. If you mean that you are directing a prayer towards them to intercede for you in some way, then no we don't. If you mean that we ask The Saints (Saints being another term for members of the LDS Church) for assistance, then yes we do. LDS do not recognize people who have been given the status of 'saint' by other religions as having any special powers. With the exceptions of St. Nicholas, Valentine and Patrick, we have very little knowledge of the 'saints' as they have very little relevance to our religion and how we practice it. We do not petition those dead people to assist us in our lives. Jesus Christ is our mediator with God, and our prayers are directed to God through Jesus. We do not pray to other people, places, or things.
-
For the uninitiated, LDS do not pray to or ask the help of dead saints, Catholic or otherwise. We pray only to God, in the name of Jesus Christ his son.

And now it's over. Or now it's over? Hmmmmm, can't decide which one to use here. Either way, it's over.

Well, you misread a fellow poster's words and passed judgement on him as being judgemental. Doesn't that strike you as even a little strange?
-
Opprobrium. Great, now I have to find an online dictionary that recognizes that word to find out what it means.

They likely feel that you would be more comfortable meeting with men who are closer to you in age than the younger elders probably are.

Except, and this is where you got into trouble, is that he did not use the word 'and'. He used the word 'or'. If he had said that anyone who breaks the Law of Chastity is automatically excommunicated, I would be right there with you, brother. But he didn't say that, and you have spent the last 3 pages of this thread misrepresenting what he actually did say. And I for one don't appreciate your efforts to use a broad brush to paint those who actually read what he said as having an 'unchristian' view. In fact, I'm slightly offended by your misplaced sense of superiority over those here who have displayed better reading comprehension skills than you have.

Just as when Reagan was shot and the WTC towers were hit, I remember where I was when the news broke about this.
-
Why do you insist on skipping the word 'disfellowshipped'? Is your monitor broken? Disfellowship does not equal excommunication.
-
I suggest you remove the duck and goose calls from your grill.
-
What you allege was said was not said. Here is what mnn said: He did not say that having a child out of wedlock means you are going to be excommunicated automatically. What he did say is that members who were not living the Law of Chastity and made a baby out of wedlock likely have been disfellowshipped or excommunicated, and inferred that one or either of those consequences of sin would seriously impede the ability of a young man or woman to serve a mission. He was not rushing to judgement of you or anyone else.
-
Depending on the situation, young people have been and could in the future be excommunicated for for having a child out of wedlock. Granted, excommunication in these types of cases are generally reserved for people who have been through the temple, but it can happen. I saw no rudeness in his response, but rather a directness that may have rubbed you the wrong way. As for judging people, I suggest that you may be mistaken on what that means. Sin is sin, and the church has disciplinary courts for those who commit serious sins. Bishops are Judges in Israel, and as such are charged with exercising righteous judgement on those they have jurisdiction over.
