Who still has TV service through cable or satellite?
JojoBag replied to pam's topic in General Discussion
No one said you couldn't watch any show you wanted. That's your agency. It doesn't change the fact that 99% of "family friendly" TV shows contain adult themes. What I simply cannot understand is why people (not saying it's you) think that if something is not appropriate for a child to watch, it's OK for an adult. If it's garbage and will damage a child spiritually, it's garbage for an adult and will damage him spiritually. What you consider "bossy, fussy and self-righteous" is nothing more than the truth. I have no doubt in my mind that the same could have been said of Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, Abinadi, Moroni, and Jesus Christ. All of them told the truth and some of them were killed for it. You are free to watch any movie, TV show, or video you want, but you aren't free to choose the consequences of watching them. By watching anything that has inappropriate content, anything that would subvert morals, decency and God's laws, or anything that would desensitize us to accepting perversion as normal, we are supporting industries that are in direct opposition to our Heavenly Father. I just can't see the Savior going to some place where a photographer is proudly displaying nude photographs or paintings claiming they are "art." Why anyone would bring this garbage into their home or go see it in a theater baffles me; it's playing with fire. -

I stopped watching the boob tube almost two years ago. It all has to do with keeping inappropriate content out of my home. I have to deal with immodesty when out in the world, but I can seriously limit it coming into my home. I find that the TV is a major channel for the influence of evil spirits. The media is also the preferred method for worldly propaganda. TV, videos, movies, and radio are filled with subtle, satanic worldly ideas that can ensnare an unwary Latter-day Saint/Christian if he is not constantly on guard for deception. Even some so-called "LDS" inspired movies are deceptive. One specifically is the Singles Ward. The Parents Television Council did a study of "family friendly" TV shows. Fully 99% of them contained "adult" content. The only thing the overwhelming majority of TV shows and movies do is anesthetize the masses into thinking that all is right with the world. For those who indulge, it forms their thinking through a distorted, perverted view of how the world should be. This is called "progressive thinking," but and all is part of the Gadianton plan to subvert people into believing in concepts like, "Live and let live," and "Go along to get along." -
I home schooled my kids because of a teacher who was far more interested in conformity and getting rid of what she perceived as a problem child than teaching. At the beginning of the second half of first grade, we got called into her office. The teacher said that my son was disruptive, couldn't concentrate, couldn't read at his level, and needed to be put in a special needs class. We couldn't understand what she was talking about; my son read could the scriptures without stuttering. We explained this, but the teacher still insisted that he couldn't read at his level, so we told him to grab any reader off the teacher's shelf and read it out loud. He took down a fifth grade reader and read it aloud without any hesitation. The surprised teacher then expressed doubt that my son comprehended what he just read. We asked him to explain what he read, which he proceeded to do in a concise, comprehensive manner. The teacher stuck to her guns and said that he still was disruptive and needed to be put in a special needs class. My best friend homeschooled all of his kids, so we pulled our son out of school and began teaching him. We concluded that essentially, my son was bored. With very few exceptions, the problem now with both private and public education is the massive socialist influence that has permeated the teaching curriculum and texts. If you are familiar with the book, "The Naked Communist," you will realize that this was one of the 45 goals of the communist party. Here is the one in question: Now you've got the so-called "common core" education system. I call it the "communist core" system. It has been deliberately designed to dumb down kids. I saw a video of a woman who was able to emigrate from China. She said it was exactly what the Chinese education system does to their children. The other problem with the current school system is that it teaches our children to accept the ways of the world. I hear the term, "go along to get along." In other words, don't do or say anything to offend anyone else. It teaches kids that they can do anything they want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. It leaves out traditional morals and eliminates God from education. If you can homeschool your kids, do it now before it's too late to save them.

What is the most important verse in Section 89?
JojoBag replied to JojoBag's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I wonder how many times people with this philosophy have shortened their lives, or degraded the quality of their lives by am improper diet. Sure, there are people who smoke without getting cancer, or eat processed foods without having a heart attack. However, what if you are able to extend your life another two or three years by staying away from the garbage? I wished my father had been around for another two or three years. I agree that processed foods are not the major issue, but then my OP wasn't about processed foods. It's about conspiring men in the last days and their deceptive practices to make money. -
Sorry about that. I thought you were former law enforcement. I was a cop for 13 years and did investigations for two years. One thing I was taught is that the vast majority of the time, there's no such thing as a coincidence. Joseph Smith talked about the "French prophets" in his editorial, "Try the Spirits." He said they all listened to false spirits. The last I heard, Joseph Smith was a genuine prophet. As I mentioned before, Joseph Fielding Smith thought that Musser had heard a series of utterances from Joseph Smith and wrote them down as if they were one prophecy. You are right truth being intermixed with the false. Since some parts of that alleged prophecy came true, I'm wondering what else is true. This gives prima facie credibility to Joseph Fielding Smith's statement that what Musser heard were utterances from Joseph.
-
Then why did part of that prophecy come true? Pure coincidence? You shouldn't believe in coincidences as a former cop. I also remember part of the Joseph Fielding Smith's statement, which will take me a bit to dig up. I would consider it a clarification of his father's statement.
-
The key to Joseph F. Smith's statement is "it was never spoken by the prophet in the manner in which they have out it forth." Joseph Fielding Smith speculated in a general conference that the writers of the "prophecy" heard a series of utterances by Joseph Smith and wrote them down 50 years later. However, that does not mean that Joseph did not utter some of the alleged prophecies. I did an analysis of the White Horse Prophecy and there are a number of things that did come true. Take for example the statements regarding Turkey and the Democrat-Republican party. It split in 1858 becoming our present day Democrats and Republicans. The Independent party came into being in 1967. The Ottoman Empire was defeated in 1917. The part where America will spend its strength warring in foreign lands. Just since WWII, the U.S. has been involved in over 150 police actions and minor brush wars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_United_States_military_operations Then the part about the military leaders saying, "Brethren, we are glad you have come. Hence forth send us men who can talk to God." Obama is purging the military of Christians, "men who can talk to God." The statements that America will be invaded by a foreign power and the Constitution hanging by a thread were repeated by other prophets and apostles. I agree that not all of the White Prophecy is true, but there are things that have already been fulfilled. It makes me wonder what else will come true.

What is the most important verse in Section 89?
JojoBag replied to JojoBag's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
It isn't just the food industry. I picked it because everyone eats and heart disease is the number one killer in America. However, there is also the pharmaceutical and tobacco industries. Medical mistakes are the No. 3 leading cause of death and a part of that are drugs. Look at the price of prescription drugs! It's criminal what is allowed. -
What do you think is the most important verse in Section 89? My darling and I talk about this and have concluded it is the following verse: It looks like Heavenly Father is a conspiracy theorist. “In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days....” What is this conspiracy? I don't think it's necessarily all a Gadianton conspiracy, but mostly it's about money. It's about the food/agricultural industry doing whatever it can get away with to accumulate the almighty dollar. Let's look at some of bad things produced by the food/agriculture industry. Raise your hand if you like cold cereal. I feel sorry for you if you eat it. Here's a Reader's Digest version about two rat experiments and extruded cereal. In 1942 and 1960, researchers conducted experiments by giving rats three or four different special diets: water and no food, grain or rat chow and water, sugar and water, boxed extruded cereal and water, and the box the cereal came in and water. Wanna know which group died first? The rats that ate the cereal died within two weeks. You can read about it here: http://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/dirty-secrets-of-the-food-processing-industry/ Then there's the neurotoxins, aspartame, yeast extract, sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, MSG, diacytl, aluminum, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and sucralose to name only a few. All of these can damage the brain and cells throughout the body, and are an ingredient in many foods. Next on the list are all the processed foods. I consider processed foods as anything that has nutrients taken from and/or added during preparation, and anything added (chemicals of any sort, bad oils and fats) that is not originally a part of that food. I am excluding things like good oils and fats used in cooking, or the cooking process itself, and legitimate spices. There probably are other things I've not included, but you get the idea. Basically, if the food is altered from its original form (not cooking), it's processed. Next is the factory farming of animals. There is a major difference between eggs produced in an operation that confines chickens and true, free range-pastured chickens. Here is the visible difference: confined eggs are yellow and pastured eggs are orange because they contain lutein and zeaxanthin (antioxidents). Here is the nutrient difference: twice as much omega-3 fatty acids, three times more vitamin E, seven times more pro-vitamin A beta-carotene, a quarter less saturated fat, and a third less cholesterol. The proper ratio of omega-3 to omega 6 is 1:3. In confined farming where hormones and antibiotics are added, animals that are ruminants are fed pastry waste and grains when they should have only grass. The differences in the nutrients in grass fed meat vs. confined, garbage fed meat is amazing. Grass fed beef, chicken, turkey, pork, etc., have lower fat, less cholesterol, and up to four times more omega-3 fatty acids. Many of us drink caffeinated beverages or take OTC medicine with caffeine in it. Guess what? Researchers from BYU found a link between the spread of cancer and caffeine. Caffeine does not cause cancer but they “found that while caffeine does not damage healthy cells, it may protect cancer cells from death.” “...In preliminary tests, caffeine 'allowed damaged cells to continue to replicate and divide.' If the cell is not allowed to undergo apoptosis, then cancerous cells may be allowed to spread, and pre-cancerous cells may be allowed to progress.” (LDS Church News, 1998) How about shortening? It was invented by Proctor and Gamble in 1910 and marketed as Crisco. Fifteen to twenty years later, doctors noted a massive increase in a disease that was not very common until then: heart disease. Increasingly, animal fats, palm oil and coconut oil, all saturated fats were demonized and other vegetable oils were pushed by big agriculture as being healthy. At the same, heart disease skyrocketed to become the leading cause of death. This past year, several studies have come out that demonstrated that saturated fats are not the cause of heart disease, but processed foods and unhealthy oils. I'm overweight and about two months ago was given a physical. The doctor was all concerned about heart disease, specifically congestive heart failure. After a huge battery of tests, I came back to the doctor for the results. He said my heart was in good shape, but my cholesterol was a bit high. He lectured me a bit on that, then said, “Let's look at your LDL, the good cholesterol.” He scanned down the report and said, “Wow, your LDL is better than mine.” That is because I avoid processed foods. eat grass fed meats, whole grains only, drink grass fed raw milk, and eat lots of vegies. In my house, we make everything from scratch no matter how much time it takes. BTW, I make a mean whole wheat crust pizza. Now, let me tell you another story with a bad ending. My dad had his first heart attack about age 50, followed by open heart surgery. My dad religiously followed the “heart healthy diet” prescribed by the doctor. He ate no beef, only chicken, turkey, and rabbit (yuck). He had only “good” vegetable oils and such, low fat cheese and milk, no butter, etc. The processed foods he ate were of the “healthy” variety. In spite of this, he had two more heart attacks, each followed by open heart surgery. During his forth open heart surgery that was replacing a defective pacemaker/defibrillator, the doctor killed him by tugging on the wrong wire. The closer we get to the end times, the worse all of this will get.

I'm trying to a quote alleged by Joseph Smith regarding WWIII. I was told it by another person about, but he could not provide a source. It goes like this: WWIII will be short and will be fought primarily in the air and under the sea. Does anyone have any information on this or can provide a source?

My wife had trouble getting her green card and had to go back to Australia for a few months. I thought I'd be without her for several months, but Santa got me a ticket back to her. Now I'm complete.

I'm not doubting priesthood power or faith or the Atonement. I was healed from nearly five decades of porn addiction through the power of faith, a priesthood blessing, and the Atonement. I was started in porn at age six by my forty-something neighbor and became addicted at age seven. I have completely overcame my addiction and am revolted beyond belief at the thought of porn. In spite of being healed, I still suffer the consequences on a regular basis. Also, my grown children suffer the consequences of my addiction and I'm afraid my grandchildren will also. You are right that Christ is the answer and the Atonement heals. What it doesn't do is stop the consequences. It takes away the pain of the consequences and of the memories, which is a major blessing. This is what I meant.

This is where you are wrong. She will pay the consequences of his actions as will her children for years to come. She will suffer anguish, frustration, doubt, lack of trust, etc. All the arguments they will get into over this will affect her children and shape their lives. He will pass on his attitude to his children if she cannot counter it. She will always think she isn't good enough for her husband and every other woman will be her enemy because he will always be looking at those other women. That is the burden her husband placed on her that she must deal with. I saw what my addiction did to my wife and it is the same for every other woman I've read about.

I think the PDF file I got this from was a student handout created by a teacher. The second paragraph was added after the quote but I don't think it was written by Elder Maxwell.

I found this quote from BYU.

One thing I learned about teenagers is that they don't listen to their parents. I would find someone the teen does trust and get them to help out.

I avoid caffeine because it seriously messes up my sleep, but I do drink a cola occasionally just because. I used the WoW as an example because I began researching it and came up with a number of quotes from GA's that condemn the practice. That got me thinking about the spirit of the law vs. the letter of the law and I began talking it over with my wife. I couldn't think of any other example to use. This discussion has really opened my eyes.
-
First off, let me say that I very much appreciate yours and the other comments. I have learned much. Based on what you've written, is it living the spirit of the law that separates those who attain the Celestial Kingdom from those who get something else?

You've got a real problem on your hands. In reading through your posts, it's obvious that you've been taken in by the world. While you have not necessarily caused the problem, you've definitely contributed to it by what you “think” is normal when it comes to modesty. You've also contributed to the problem by not doing the things recommended by Church leaders to strengthen both your marriage and testimony. Things like attending church regularly, attending the temple, studying the scriptures, and praying. I say you've been taken in by the world because you think there's nothing wrong with him looking at bikini shots and things like lingerie models. You couldn't be more wrong. It is pornography of a milder sort, but pornography nonetheless. The idea that “boys will be boys” and “men just look” are also satanic worldly concepts. It makes absolutely no difference if men's brains are different from women's, or any other psychological, pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo. This does nothing more than give men a worldly justification for lusting, but is always wrong in the eyes of our Heavenly Father. Do you really think that the Savior would be sitting down with the guys and spending the weekend lusting over the latest Victoria's Secret catalog? Another way you've been taken in is thinking that there's nothing wrong with R-rated movies. Here is the Church's take on those movies. This is pretty strong counsel. I know there are those who say that immodesty is all around us, so what can you do? This is nothing more than a pathetic cop out and justification for not using self-control. We are required to bridle our appetites and passions, and bring our spirit into subjection to God's will. No amount of immodesty, however small is OK, including how you dress. The one thing you can do is make your home a sanctuary from the world by not bringing that filth into your home. You've definitely contributed to this problem by giving him permission to look at inappropriate material. I had a problem with porn for nearly five decades and my ex contributed to my problem by watching inappropriate movies right along with me. She would even point out characters to me. This created confusion and anger in me when it was pointed out to me that it was wrong and not normal. This is what your husband is going through. What he thought was OK is now not OK. Additionally he likes what he is doing and doesn't want to stop, which is probably the real reason he's angry. You've got a long road ahead of you. You've made your bed and now you've got to sleep in it. Accept that right now. You may change, but the consequences of your choices will continue on for a long, long time, and will affect your children, and, more than likely, your grandchildren. Accept this also. If you want your marriage to succeed, you are going to have to develop a tremendous amount of patience and be very long suffering. He's going to fight you on this tooth and nail, because to him, his actions are “normal,” and you reinforced them. You will have to teach him that it isn't normal to lust after other women. You need to learn what are true Gospel teachings and filter out all the worldly garbage you've picked up along the way. The scriptures talk about “inherited lies” (D&C 123:7, Jer 16:19) and Joseph Smith taught about false traditions accepted by the Latter-day Saints (HC 6:184-185). This is what has happened to you by allowing yourself to be deceived into thinking that immodesty is normal and acceptable. If you don't learn the genuine truth and discard your worldly traditions, you will pass them on to your children and condemn another generation to being deceived. Your children will also pay the price for your choices.

I was talking with my darling about the spirit of the law vs. the letter of the law. My question was: Is it just as serious to break the spirit of the law as it is the letter of the law? For example, while the Church has no official position regarding the consumption of caffeinated soft drinks as violating the WoW, several church leaders have stated either directly or by implication that it violates the spirit of the WoW. Additionally, there are many articles on the Church web site that condemn drinking them, yet members persist in justifying their drinking by saying “there's no official position.” I think breaking the spirit of the law goes back to being commanded in all things. For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward. (Doctrine and Covenants 58:26)

JojoBag replied to MormonMama's topic in Advice Board
I see your confusion. I meant one thing and was not clear. Let me go back to the all important qualifier: If he does not change. I do not advocate anyone leaving a spouse if they make the necessary changes in their lives. I also do not advocate leaving because a person can be difficult when first confronted with these problems. A person who looks at porn experiences shame, embarrassment, frustration at being caught, anger because they want to continue their addiction/problem, etc. It is a rare person who outright admits their problem, confesses, and turns their life around at the drop of a hat. Almost without exception, they balk at the changes demanded of them. I do advocate patience and long suffering, but not at the expense of a person's mental health if the spouse is abusive. I do consider looking at porn a form of emotional abuse. It is devastating to the victim spouse and can damage the relationship beyond repair. -

You are correct that Pres. Young did not say for a wife to leave an unrepentant spouse. Here is his exact quote. What would you consider an "unrepentant spouse?" How long does one spouse endure infidelity, breach of trust, and emotional abuse? This is precisely what looking at pornography (no matter how extreme or tame) is: infidelity, breach of trust and emotional abuse. I only had to tell my wife just one time about my use of pornography before I stopped and overcame it. How long does a wife endure this? I think it is up to each individual person and their ability to cope with this type of abuse. Some people have a greater capacity to understand and forgive. I don't think that a woman should have to cope with years of abuse.
