  1. You can also try reading through the "Revelation in Context" manual from start to end
  2. I have heard some variation of this in every ward I have ever attended.
  3. @Vort @kapikui i agree with Vort. In today's society, we expect instant entertainment and when boredom to Amy extent rolls along, we assume something is wrong. My aunt told me something the other day. She said "People now-a-days don't know how to be bored." I think you are bored, but when you "get distracted", you are really getting entertained by something else so you can bare what your mind says is boring.
  4. We don't prepare lessons to given them, we prepare lessons to inspire students to repent and come into Christ. If a student isn't paying sttention, maybe there is something we can do to help the student. Also, Im sure their are people more righteous than we are that could say "just stay home" to us when we fall short of their current spiritual standards.
  5. Shoot me now!! (Jk ) I remember in seminary they would always demand the students to bring physical copies and would talk about how they were so much better. It created a complex in a lot of students that students who used their iPhones for scriptures were somehow less than those who didn't anyway... the teachers don't ask students to bring physical copies anymore if they have electronic copies, missionaries in state side missions use tablets, we are seeing an increase in videos and digital pictures used in General Conference, the church is CONSTANTLY updating the gospel library and their other apps. I feel like we will be moving more towards incorporation of electronics than the deincorporation of them. I don't see the brethren making a broad statement as cut and dry as "do not use electronics in sacrament meeting". We do however, see them teaching the doctrine of the sacrament and showing us a few ways we are known for removing the sacredness of it and teaching correct principles in hopes that we can govern ourselves. Any statement made in stakes or wards by those in authority and under correct stewardship should also be obeyed with strictness.
  6. I know I have spoken out against this... I still do... but instruction from priesthood leaders trumps any opinion of mine. better adhere lest you get caught in rebellion.
  7. Putting my love for the convenience and speed of technology aside... I agree. For whatever reason, when we see a screen in our periferal vision we have to stare at it. However, books are not all innocent in the matter I can't tell you how often I'm writing personal notes down in sacrament, seminary/institute, or GC I see someone sitting next to me watching every word I write but screens are much worst. But not nearly as bad when you are in a silent, child barren wasteland called the YSA. But do I need to abandon the organized note taking system I have used and developed for the past 3 years and make a new one because others find it distracting? Am I responsible for distracting others who lack self control to not look at a screen from obtaining knowledge? Am I my brother's keeper???
  8. @jerrop It does happen a lot huh! But it is the order of things in the church to "move up the ranks" of leadership and administration. As amissiomary, you go from junior companion to senior companion, to district leader, to zone leader, to assistant to the president. There are variations to this. I was made a district leader the same time I was a madsenior companion and I knew multiple people who went from district leader to assistant or senior companion to zone leader. But it is common to increase in stewardship in order to grow personally. Aside from revelation, that may be why it happens that way.
  9. I specifically had this talk in mind while making the post. This is how my sacraments go. 1. Sacrament prayer ends. 2. Open note section of gospel library and go to my sacrament section of my notebook book. 3. List off every covenant I have made in my life (the 5 or 6 covenants involved with baptism and the 5 from the endowment) and do a self evaluation on how well I kept each covenant this week. 4. Type on any spiritual promptings I feel and things I can do to improve for the coming week. Like all technology, it can be used for good or evil. I don't see apostle getting mad st people writing in journals or reading scriptures/hymns. Again... just cause someone has their tablet put during church does not mean they are ignoring what is going on... after all, the LDS church did put the note section in the app... If I stray from my righteous actions on the tablet, then that is when it becomes a problem. I find that if im not occupied with deliberate note taking and conscious pondering with a place to put my thoughts, I think about Skyrim, Starwars, Drumline or how badly I want to kiss my fiancé.
  10. @BeccaKirstyn I use the notes on my gospel library to take notes during sacrament meeting. It is also where I go to take notes on feelings I feel during the actual sacrament. I could switch to paper, but I have a year of Sunday sacrament notes on my iPhone/iPad. It's nice having it all in one place.I would be pretty frustrated if they said no more of that. just cause someone has their phone out during the sacrament doesn't mean they are desecrating the ordinance.
  11. Evil is a natural thing. The purpose of life is to learn to choose good over evil. The natural man is an enemy of god and is naturally evil (Mosiah 3:19) Without evil, we can't choose good and progress to exaltation. Without Satan or someone like him to rebel, how can we progress to exaltation? Yes maybe this EXACT situation hasn't and never will happen again, but satanlike children of God will come again. Without evil, Gods plan is frustrated. and you can't possibly say it was a rare occurance... there is nothing that supports that.
  12. So do you believe that future and past creations were for the most part peaceful and without dissent or rebellion?
  13. Growing up, parents have stewardship over you and receive revelation specifically for your life. When you are an adult, do they still?? If not, does it end when you leave the house? Turn 18?
  14. Yes! But I don't know that I have more sources than d+c 132 google "LDS eternal increase" and im sure talks, manuals and other sources will come up in the subject.
  15. Even if it does, the atonement doesn't prevent people from perdition @Rob Osborn It will happen again. 1/3 of the host of heaven is not "rare". Discussion in the endowment ordinance also explain that this is not the first time something like this happened.
  16. I think that is one thing that we need to learn. I won't pretend to understand, but we can't base our happiness on the choices of others, even close family. And will the evils of 1 child ruin the joys of the other 2? God himself weeps! But sadness and joy are two drastically different emotions that do not have an effect on one another.
  17. Oh I see that! Definetly done this before x)
  18. I mean like praying "bless my less active friend that someone will invite them to church" and you not doing anything about it yourself. this is also advice given to my mission by Elder Christofferson also found in James 2:14-26
