  1. I'm wondering if her disapproval is seeping through her support. If she unconsciously recoils or recrimination comes up in her eyes when he tries to kiss her with smoke on his breath, or when she smells smoke on him, that could explain not wanting to kiss her and the other avoidances. People generally hide things when they are worried about how people react when it is found out. It could be his own guilty consciousness at work, but he could be cuing off of smaller things that she's not consciously doing. In short, if she's giving negative feedback when he goes to kiss her, he's gonna stop kissing her even if the feedback isn't in relation to the kiss per se.
  2. Fundamentally those teachings that distinguish it from the rest of Christianity; such as the Apostasy, Restoration, and Priesthood. While a falsity of doctrines critical to Christianity, such as the atonement and resurrection, would also have me leaving I'm inclined to think of that as leaving Christianity rather than leaving the Church specifically.
  3. It's kinda interesting, I've seen some comments from people out west who hint or point out the water as a silver lining (I'm not saying you are doing this). Snow just doesn't work that way out here, even if we did have a drought while the snow might recharge some reservoirs we don't have a snowpack to hold onto it into the summer. It is interesting how your thinking changes with geography. As far as wanting the snow in Utah, you're welcome to every flake, particularly the 18 inch berm blocking the end of my driveway.
  4. I'm approaching this from a game perspective. If the scouts/fighters become non/less-functioning without the extra calories you may run into the situation were you enter a feedback loop where the diminished ability of the scouts to gather resources results in fewer resources which leads to an even greater diminished ability to gather resources. If you don't have the ability to maintain your resource gathering you risk a death spiral resource wise.
  5. Yep, if you can finding a dollar theater that is the way to go. That way it isn't so painful if you have to abort half-way through.
  6. Home Teaching/Visting teaching doesn't go through the missionaries (which is why they don't know). Visiting Teaching assignments are given by the Relief Society President, Home Teaching assignments are give by the Elder's Quorum President in a Young Single Adult Ward. You can also talk to the counselor's of the relevant presidency, they'll also be able to figure out who is assigned to you and if nobody is assigned, make sure that someone gets assigned. If you don't know who is who you can sign into LDS.org, go to the directory (click on Your Name/Tools and look at the pop-down list) and you can have the directory display the leadership in your ward. If you don't have an LDS.org account and want one I'd be more than happy to tell you how to go about doing it (it's fairly straight forward, you just need your membership number which you'd ask the Ward Clerk to give you). Usually new members do a year of Gospel Principles and then switch over to Gospel Doctrine which does a four year rotation of: Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Church History, Old Testament (which is what is scheduled for 2014), and New Testament. The manuals are all online so you can do self-study (they also pass out the relevant student manual at the start of the year). The beefier Institute of Religion manuals are also online if you want to go more in depth. 7. I disagree with a rendering of those verses as, "It is pleasing to the Lord to abstain from meat totally." Verse 13 states it's pleasing to the Lord that they not be used except during times of winter, cold, or famine. If you think on a practical level that means total abstinence I think that's perfectly fine way to go about it applying it in your every day life, but that's different than what the verse is stating as it's giving an exception to "It is pleasing unto me that they should not be used". Stating that it says it is pleasing to the Lord to abstain from meat totally is basically discarding the second half of the sentence.
  8. I think every time I've 'bust out the circles' I've drawn it at that moment rather than using a prepared chart. Though I suppose in certain circumstances a prepared graphic is handy. One nice thing about drawing it by hand is that people can discuss it if they feel that something is being left out. For instance, if you'd been in a class and were sketching out the above one by hand we the class members could chime in with the objections and suggestions we did and it could have been resketched. It would have been a prime opportunity for us to discuss why we objected to specific aspects of the chart. Obviously if you're teaching children or new investigators you want to be wary of using the technique of, "What's wrong with what I've drawn?" But it can be a great way to spark a discussion among those who tend to just think, "Plan of Salvation? I've got this, shutting brain down..."
  9. Well you see, if you understand the distinction then you'd understand that, "X does not have the gift of the Holy Ghost" does not imply, "X is never guided by the Holy Ghost." You were responding to someone who is LDS, in an LDS Gospel Discussion Forum, who is clearly using it in the LDS sense, for Traveler's statement, the Catholic sense is irrelevant, he's not stating that according to Catholic understanding and definition of the idea of the gift of the Holy Ghost that you have it and Nuns don't. It's understandable if one is unaware of the, intended given the context, LDS sense and thus uses a different sense they know, but otherwise it comes across as intentional misconstruction.
  10. Nope, but rather that they do not have the gift of the Holy Ghost. Are you unaware of the distinction?
  11. I find myself agreeing with MoE and JAG. While D&C 76:31-37 certainly qualifies as apostasy not all apostasy qualifies. It's a case of all oranges are citrus but not all citrus are oranges. What we know concerning the celestial glory is that the new and everlasting covenant is required for exaltation and that baptism is required for the Celestial Kingdom. Unless I'm missing something the image is reaching beyond our (speaking collectively of the Church's) knowledge of the matter. Not only is the Judgement and Resurrection missing, where is Spirit Prison/Paradise? While the chart is probably trying to handle the aspect of faith in the path to the Celestial Kingdom with the pillars it is a little disconcerting to see faith in this little small text and then see something like the WoW writ large. I think: "Faith in Christ and Enduring to the End" would be a better text to put up there.
  12. Same here. I always love tests when in the middle of taking them you can note the patterns and what each questions is suppose to yield for a particular result. Online personality tests in particular can be a little obvious for that sort of thing.
  13. 66% Left brained.
  14. Moroni marches down to basically conscript them (with draft dodging being a capital offense) with the support of the duly recognized government. They (or at least some) take up arms against Moroni's forces and four thousand are slain in battle, surviving leaders are thrown into prison as there isn't time for trials. If Moroni was marching down there to simply put them all to the sword it's rather curious that leaders where placed in prison because there is no time for trials. In other terms the MPs showed up to make sure people reported for duty, it turned into a shoot out and when the smoke cleared the surviving leaders are put jail, he didn't just run down there and start chopping off the heads of everyone who happened to be a King-man. Also, before feeling all oogy over them being singled out for conscription, what would have happened to any group of several thousand (at minimum four thousand by the account) Nephites that decided they didn't feel like defending the country? Was Moroni's warrant a special case where everyone else was free to sit out the war? Or was he asking to be given authority to apply the standing law and/or obligation? I'm inclined to give the benefit of a doubt because a universal expectation and obligation in such a society doesn't seem out there, particularly given their past wars with the Lamanites. If you see it as akin to the Tea Party loosing an election and being rounded up to serve in Afghanistan because they rub some officer the wrong way I can understand a double take, but I don't see it that way.
  15. If you're thinking about the Kingmen, you're mistaken. They were tried and executed by the duly recognized government in accordance to the laws of the land during a time of war (Alma 51:5-7; 62:8-10).
  16. Back when CFLs were new and they were trying to encourage people it wasn't unheard of for the local power company to subsidize them to get them into people's homes. And you still see it, I picked up some CFLs a few months back that were heavily discounted due to the local power company subsidizing them (a dozen 60 watt equivalents for $3). Anyone seen similar subsidies for LEDs?
  17. I'm not saying it is a good idea, I saying if she wants to know what he thinks she's going to have to ask him. How the topic can be broached, or even if it can, without giving offense is going to depend on the exact circumstances of their relationship.
  18. Unless there is something seriously odd in your marriage the agony of divorce, for both of you, will be significantly worse. It's kinda like proposing to deal with the pain of a blistered finger by chopping off your arm with a rusty spoon.
  19. Whether it be because of biology, society, or some other factor the conclusion of the impact seems to be the same. Edit: I completely and utterly reconstructed my post because I realize it was based on some misunderstandings. My apologies to Pam if I edited the post out from under her after she thanked it.
  20. If you really want to know his thought process, ask him (not publicly). A simple joke, "Airline lose your luggage?" could get the whole thing started, as unless you ask him specifically the best understanding you are gonna be able to get is, "He either views it as being in harmony with his covenants or views it as a minor transgression* that can be justified by the special occasion." I suppose people can hypothesize why such is the case, but unless it is from the horse's mouth you'll be limited to possibilities rather than actuality. *Rarely are people villains in their own mind. If they don't fully rationalize something as acceptable they generally manage to categorize it as minor.
  21. Particularly above and beyond the existing Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi security isn't infallible but as long as the TV is using the same security protocols as the network I'm not seeing why it would be a weak point.
  22. If anything it's a condescending view of people because the process isn't unique to converts, it's a people phenomenon. Of course I don't consider myself superior as I do it too, I'm just not in a position to observe it from the outside when it involves me. I suppose one can argue it's still a view of converts because it's a view that includes converts, but without the superiority aspect it fails being condescending. You see it is interesting watching not because I'm above it all, but because I go through it too. We're in agreement there, at least to the degree that she isn't anymore than any other average person. Of course she does, on an intellectual level, so we're in agreement there. Of course having it hit home viscerally is something different. Did I say it wasn't? Nope. Well, glad we're in agreement. Considering I didn't say it was because it looks like we're in agreement on that point. You see what I'm saying it is about is people realizing that their mental image/expectation of people has put someone on a pedestal, one they've subsequently fallen from. That out of the way: Who justified it? I can think of one person as of your posting, arguably, but they didn't justify a honeymoon/vacation exemption. I'm used to "y'all" as a plural, but it isn't a native colloquialism for me so maybe I'm misunderstanding its use but I'd expect there to be at least one more person.
  23. It is always kinda interesting watching recent converts come to the realization (or further realization) that LDS in general, and those most closely involved with their conversion in particular, are imperfect. The exact imperfection that brings the realization varies, and sometimes is something perceived rather than real, but it is sorta like watching a kid realize that Dad isn't Superman.
  24. He probably doesn't view it as violating his covenants, so it's unlikely he's thinking, "Other people might wonder why I'm violating my covenants." Even within the 3 S guidelines people draw the lines differently and by and large they stand on the side of the line they classify as being in harmony with their covenants.
  25. Putting aside possible software issues, chances are it is a case of the attribution being lost in editing and/or the attribution being neglected when manual quote tags are used.
