The church has strengthened its policy for submitting names of those who are born within 110 years.  This impacts people doing their very close relatives, like grandparents.

It then goes on and suggests how to approach nonLDS relatives.

Anyway, it appears to me that temple work has increasing become a target of the critics of the church.  The media has picked up on that, that we are "baptizing the dead into the Mormon church."  Just one more of those weird Mormon beliefs.

In our county, we get fined for a false fire alarm.  Perhaps somebody should have started a small fire in the kitchen.

The only person who knew how to handle the fire alarm system was the former bishop, and, of course, he was on vacation.

This was a very interesting Sunday.  My wife is out of town, and I had three young grandchildren to care for in Sacrament Meeting.  They were all over the place, jumping on each other, etc

    And then, A MIRACLE!

Someone pulled the fire alarm, and everybody filed out of the building.  The klaxon scared the baby and she was screaming.

It took awhile for them to find the key to the tripped alarm box and shut it down -- had to go to the Bishop in another ward to get the key.  But the system still would not shut down.  The bishop, the fire department, the Stake, and SLC could not figure out what codes were needed to turn it off.

Does "Chinese fire drill" ring a bell?

Anyway, Bishop told us to go home, read the scriptures and pray.

My Catholic friend asks, "Why don't Mormons use the cross?"

"Well, we don't use the cross, but we do have the Angel Moroni.  Not only on temples, but also on tie pins."

The "best person" may actually be someone not actively attending church.  That may be an inactive member that you could activate, or a nonmember.  Go the the Lord and the missionaries and them what you need.

FWIW, during a temple recommend interview, the Stake President said that the biggest reason people are not renewing their recommend is not over tithing, but because they cannot support the leaders of the church as prophets.

During a recent General Conference, someone shouted out "No' during the sustaining vote.

The division has begun.  This division will start from within the church itself.

This new policy allows openly active gays (e.g. same-sex marriage) to participate not only as local leaders, BUT ALSO AS LEADERS ON THE DISTRICT AND NATIONAL LEVEL.  It is just a matter of time that policies will be crafted and approved by these new leaders which are contrary to the teachings and interests of the church.

Regarding litigation, this is another reason to leave.  The BSA is a non-profit, subject to litigation, but when the church creates an internal organization, it will be covered by the same religious exemptions as the church.

BSA, it was nice knowing you but it's time to go.  Surely you knew when you adopted this policy that the LDS church would leave -- "you can choose your own local leaders" is simply a fig leaf for the radical change that is overtaking your organization.

"Withdrawing from BSA will leave a void in the caliber of our YM program which is going to have to be filled somehow. My hope is that as we fill this void, we'll learn that the Church *can* run a decent youth activity program on its own; which will in turn make for a more robust and outdoors-oriented YW activity program as well. "

An interesting question.  How much of the scouting program in the church is dependent on the BSA?  The boys will still go camping, hiking, etc.  The church organization will basically stay the same.  As I see it (a non-scouting adult), the void will include handbooks, merit badges, and official scout camps, scout uniforms, leadership training, and universally recognized ranks such as Eagle Scout.

I suspect there will be a multi-year transition period and we will remain in the BSA until the church is able to fill in that void.  And, of course, we already have many many experienced scout leaders to help make the new program successful.

When I joined the church many years ago, I went to a youth activity at the bowling alley.  I remember how I sat down and ordered a Coke.
"Oh, no, Coke has caffeine and we can't drink that", my friend told me.
So we both ordered a Dr. Pepper.

Years later I found out that Dr. Pepper had more caffeine than a Coca Cola.

Apologetics is my hobby -- been doing it for over 30 years.  I discovered a new opportunity to talk with the antiMomormons, and have opened this thread to give some quickie examples.

Now this first one is not about Mormonism but about evolution.  Some guy gave a "thought experiment" to demonstrate evolution, and here is my response to show that you can prove anything with a thought experiment.
    ++++++++++++

Let's use a thought experiment to prove that humans have a third eye in the back of their head -- it's called adaptive evolution. Humans with that third eye were able to have a better survival rate because they could see danger behind as well as in front of them. The two-eyed humans, believe it or not, eventually went extinct. Can you believe that your 85 million - great- grandfather actually had only TWO eyes!
Remember, this is only a thought experiment.

You have demonstrated that the historic Christian church was no longer lead by prophets, but theologians and philosophers.  They were not chosen by God, but selected based on their impressive credentials and rhetorical skills.

    Claire,

"That's my interpretation of those verses. If there's some other accepted LDS one, feel free to share them with me"
    Happy to oblige.

I use the KJV, and there are significant differences between your text and the KJV.

    1. [20] Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Christ is talking not only to his apostles, but "them also which shall believe on me".

    2. [22], " And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:"

That phrase is missing from your text.  In the context of Romans 8:17, it is clear what what Christ is teaching here -- we are promised to be "JOINT HEIRS" with Christ

    Also see also point #4.

    3.  [21] That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:

I assume that you think that we will be  "one substance" with the Father and Son, if you are consistent with your beliefs.  Again look at verse 22, "that they are one, EVEN AS we are one."

But I'm sure there are many who can come up with an alternative interpretation.

    4. Now, Rev. 3 [21] To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Again, the meaning here is quite clearto my way of thinking.  Especially in the context of the other scriptures.
