My biggest doctrinal concern from the CoC snippit is what it leaves out! Like the true nature of God and the separateness of the Father and the Son and the fight he had with Satan. Not to mention the specific nature of the answers he received from the almighty. It feels like a big watering down effort.

I watch those shows on tv and they are compelling. Sometimes I just looks like a big show and other times it looks convincing. I think there must be something going on that is, let's say, other worldly. But, I know enough about Satan to know that he love to play and puppet with people. Wouldn't he and his hosts know certain details about people's lives. What if it is actually him sending convincing messages? Or what if he knows that children are closer to God than anyone and what if their "abilities" are just being twisted and lured by his labels and mistruths about what is actually happening. I think that if God wants to bring his world to ours, he is in control of when and where such happens. Clearly beings from that world can visit. Surely, the Spirit can comfort us about our loved ones. My very dear friend had a dream/vision concerning her daughter who was tragically killed. It was very specific and personal. I think that Satan will take everything that is good about revelation and twist it for his purpose as he twists and turns and exploits.

I think also for LDS people, it was the in the Garden of Gethsamane that he paid the price for sin -- sweating from every pore. So, the focus of LDS people is not only the cross, but the hours from the moment he entered one garden to the moment Mary met him in another.

Keep us posted, if you feel comfortable doing so. I think a lot of us would love to know how you are doing. :) -
Hello and welcome to the site. Tell us a little of your thought process. Maybe someone here may have been in similar situations. It is ok to feel the way that you do. It is a very big decision.

This is a good testimony that our trials make us stronger!

Church is not a social club - what does that mean to you?

I went to a Christmas Mass once. I was very impressed by the reverence. And I loved it when each person turned and said things to each other. I felt a deep sense of worship there. It was a good experience. -

Hello SL, I can understand a little of what you feel and have recently gone thru similar circumstance. I don't understand everything yet. I still have little pockets where I argue with this concern or that, but one thing that I do know is that the most powerful changes in my heart and my mind come from my scripture study and my personal prayers. I am certainly not the most perfect, especially thru out the last while, and for that I am sorry because I know that when I was more vigilant in those areas, the windows of heaven seemed so open to me and I felt Father opening layers of understanding in my mind -- understanding about the gospel and deep understanding about myself and my current circumstances. There have been key moments in this last year and a half where the scriptures and prayer were my only lifeline. Again, I don't see everything as clearly yet as I would like, but if I know anything at all I know that that little bit of effort, even if it is a battle within to do it, makes the biggest difference in my testimony. I have been a project. I have had people on my porch who didn't know my name but talked to me like I was a puppy. But I will say this. People in this church are not perfect and they don't always know what to say or do. But I know that they act out of love -- even if they do see your name on a list. Perhaps Father will lead the right people to you. Maybe they won't even look like the best fit. Blessings in disguise. I think sometimes Father likes to do that. My best wishes to you and with whatever you decide. This church and its doctrine really is true. I know that now, even though I forgot for a while. I can't always promise the path is clear or without sticky obstacles, but I do have faith that later we will see and understand better. -

Or "the Normans". Used to hear that one a lot on the mish. I use them interchangeably as well. I don't mind if someone calls us "mormons". I just hope that people get accurate information about us. Pretty hard to tell us we are not Christian when the official name is used.

Hello and welcome to the forum. All of your concerns are really common. I am sad to hear the one about blacks. It has not been my experience and I have been a member my whole life. Everyone, no matter their color, is welcome in our church. Just ask Gladys Knight! Not to mention the Asian family and the Samoan family I know. My SIL is from Peru and my LDS neighbors are from the Philipines. My good Lds friend is a Navajo Indian from Page, Az. It is world-wide church of many colors!!! Our focus is for the entire family of Heavenly Father's children to learn about Him and his plan for their happiness on earth and life with Him after death. Don't let such ideas keep you from understanding the church accurately. People say that to discredit us because we are different, much in the same way black people have been discredited. And frankly, I don't know why others don't think we are Christian. Completely blows my mind! Jesus is the absolute center of everything we do and feel and are. We are the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. He is the center of our name, our worship/affection, and our doctrine. We believe Jesus saved us from sin and death thru his sacrifice. We believe that we can be saved in the kingdom of God if we have faith, repent, and are baptized. We read the Bible to learn of Jesus. And we read the Book of Mormon (thus the nickname) because it is another account of Jesus coming and teaching people of the world. Give it a read sometime. Start with 3 Nephi chapter 11. It is where Christ actually visits the people who lived in ancient America. That I think more than anything will help you understand that we do in fact believe in and love Jesus Christ. Take Care. Sounds like you have been thru a lot in your life. Love to hear more about your story and your journey.
