candyprpl Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 I used to work at the parking services at Salt Lake Community College. I saw a lot of funny things but learned to keep myself under control. People tripping up stairs, running into the glass doors, all sorts of things. Anyway, one day I had a kid hand me his paper work to purchase his parking permit. As I looked down at the paper it read Last Name: Head First Name: RichardI tried my hardest, but couldnt hold it in. My face was turning red. He noticed I was struggling and said as calm and understanding as could be, "Its my name isnt it?" I appologized and he said, "Its ok. It happens all the time. My parents are from England and they dont use that term over there."I worked at the college for 6 years and came across a lot of crazy names. Most of them were foriegn so it wasnt that shocking, but when I saw this clean cut post-missionary boy standing in front of me named Richard Head I could control myself.(I'm in my fifties so it can't be the same person) I went to school with a guy with the same name and he went by Dick and not Richard. I never could understand how he felt okay about this. Quote

He said people would yell, "hey Dick (insert last name here)" and he'd just wave back and say Hi. Quote
Guest HEthePrimate Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 I'd say yes, in extreme cases it's ok. In this case, for example, it appears the girl was embarrassed by her name--why force her to keep it just because her parents were being dingbats when they named her as a baby? As a general rule, naming children should be up to the parents (I don't like Iceland's list of state-approved baby names), but there are times when they cross the line... Quote

Tough Grits Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 Hmmm, some of those names were REALLY cool. I think I need to have at least five more kids so that I can use some of those names!!!!! Seriously, I liked "Starlyn". Very cool. Quote
hordak Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 A someone who almost got a rare name i'm upset my dad backed down. He wanted to name me Balthazar but my mom didn't like it so i got to just another plain old Daniel. Like 15 other kids in my school.(small school) And i would have worried about getting picked on for my first name. I got lots of that from my last name, and the fact my mother was a playground monitor. Quote
