Traveler Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I agree, these "silly" comments are not funny. No wonder many people still have horrible ideas about Mormons when we keep adding to it in this way. Some people will take these comments seriously even if they arn't meant that way. Christ would not respond to a legitimate question such as this in a sarcastic way, let's just keep that in mind. What ever happened to the LDS people and the question, "What would Jesus do/say?" I know what you are saying and I agree - however I also believe Jesus was sarcastic with many of his answers to the Jews that intended to find falt in his teachings. For example - I see a note of sarcasism when the Jews said that Abraham was their father and Jesus responded that if Abraham was their father they would love G-d and the servants of G-d. Once in a discussion I tried that method and told someone that if they were a Christian they would be more interested in teaching about Christ than what they think Mormon believe. The response of kindness was on par with what some Jews had for Jesus. Not a great way to make friends. Over the years I have wondered the best method to respond to someone that dislikes us based on made up reason. I am not sure that it matters - I think the best way to respond is with compassion in a manner that does not leave us disliking them. The Traveler Quote
Connie Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Sarcasm is stating the opposite of an intended meaning especially in order to sneeringly, slyly, jest or mock a person. This definition comes from Widipedia. Using this definition, I see nothing sarcastic in Jesus' answer. I don't know of anything he said where he meant the exact opposite, especially to mock anyone.I won't go into this further here. If you want to know my very strongly feelings on sarcasm you can read this thread:http://www.lds.net/forums/advice-board/13527-sarcasm.html Quote
Elphaba Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 This is ''NOT'' funny at all and some people would beleive this to be true What in the world are you talking about? If someone reads this post and believes Rico has posted something offensive, then that is the poster's fault, not Rico's. There was nothing offensive at all in his post.In fact, if people here, read this thread and see no humor in his post, then they are not going to do well in the Church anyway, as no one can constantly keep being scrutinized to see if his "sense of humor" red needle is on "not funny," "hilarious," or "just right in the middle." their is so much lies told about what we beleive I thought I had heard them all but this one is sick. You thought you'd heard them all, but in Rico's post you've found that ONE post, full of lies, that made you sick? There is nothing wrong with Rico's post, and he said nothing that should bother anyone with his attempt at humor. You need a sense of humor, mate.Elphaba Quote

What ever happened to the LDS people and the question, "What would Jesus do/say?"Ok, well I guess I need to apologize. I wasnt even going to say it because I knew that this would happen. The only reason I did end up posting it was because I knew a lot of our friends on this website were Steel Magnolias fans. To the OP I am sorry. I wasnt trying to be sarcastic in anyway I was just quoting a movie because I knew some would recognize it. I meant no harm and figured since I put in the post that it was a quote you would know it wasnt true. I really am sorry. I didnt mean to offend anyone, and I definately wouldnt intentionally mis direct a true investigator. Again I am really sorry to you all. Quote
Rico Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 I don't Fannyfran meant my post, Elphabam but if she did, then I think she may have missed my transition to seriousness where I took the "funny" comment and then related it to an experience of my wife's and how some people still do believe those kind of things. Wait a second, I think I got it. I gave a testimony of how my wife overcame those kind of lies and joined the church. Let me guess, that is the sick comment, right? Fannyfran, you had me fooled all along. You're not one of those anti-Mormon protesters, are you? FF, in case you can't tell, I am just using a little light hearted humor, I love ya and I know ya mean well and I thank you for making the posts you have. Quote
pam Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) Actually I found Breeb's remarks hilarious and not offensive at all. I am a HUGE fan of the movie Steel Magnolia's and that was a classic line. True there are many untruths thrown out about the LDS religion. But this remark wasn't meant as a derogatory remark about the Church. I think those that might find it offensive are reading way too much into it and missing the humor that was intended. Some of the remarks here directed at specific individuals could have been much kinder though. Edited August 24, 2008 by pam Quote
fannyfran Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 Well I guess I missed the humor in it ,I hear people cut our faith down so much that it surprised me to read a comment such as that on the LDS.NET ,you being a member of the faith wouldn't you think that if some one that's checking this sight out that might read the comment and take it as something that LDS faiths believe? I read a while back that an X---LDS member telling the biggest lie and the lie was that at our Temples we sacrificed babies under the Temple so when I read the comment on here it touched me in the wrong way. Thank you for your reply Fannyfran Quote

I simply think sarcasm is best reserved for situations other than this, and i do think breeb and rico were very clear that it was a joke. But others were perhaps not so clear, and we do still need to be careful.I'm all for a group hug! Quote
