Naomi3 Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hi there! I'm a mom of three great teens, living in God's country (Coeur d Alene) Idaho area, going to NIC currently in the pre-nursing program and just got called to the Primary Chorister. I haven't been in Primary since my kids were little. I'm a little excited, but nervous as well. I'm worried about the time frame with school, and now this calling. Studying at my age is a trip. I do enjoy it, but it takes a bit longer for me to learn the things that I need to be a nurse. If anyone could give me great ideas to catch these kids' attention that doesn't take too much time I would sure appreciate it. Thanks a bunch! Naomi Quote
pam Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hey everyone...please welcome Naomi. We've known each other for years. Used to be in the same ward.... Hi Naomi and glad you finally made it here. Quote
Truegrits Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hi Naomi...welcome!I have been in Primary, on and off (mostly on) for years. Luckily, for everyone, it was as a teacher, because I am tone deaf and cannot carry a tune. My family tells me to just mouth the words...LOLGood luck with your nursing program. Quote

RainofGold Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hello Naomi and welcome,I love working in primary as a teacher, the younger the better. They are so sweet and so cute. I don't know anything about music, so I can't help you there. I could give you some ideas on how to keep the little children's attention during singing time. They love visuals, the more the better. And they also love to participate, holding pictures for you or choosing the songs. Some sisters only use the hymn books to teach the children to sing. boring..they loose the kids attention very easy. And I seen other sisters come very prepared it makes all the difference. There are a couple of sites on the web that has hundreds of ideas for primary and all you have to do is just print and put together. They do all the thinking for you and come up with the cool ideas so you don't have be very creative, just follow their instructions. I use them all the time, they are great help, I hope they can help you too.Primary The Idea DoorPrimary (LDS) - Main Page SugarDoodleRain:p:p Quote
NateHowe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Welcome. My biggest tip as a K-8 music teacher is CHANGE FOCUS FREQUENTLY. The kids you will be teaching, especially junior primary, have very short attention spans. It's better to work on a song for 5 minutes, go on to something else, then review for 2 minutes than to practice the same song for 15 minutes. Quote

Maya Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Hi Naomi, welcome. I been in Primary for years, not now though. You can have something interesting in your pocket or handbag, a small bell or a glass figure.... anything that interests the kids.... A good thing is KNOW what you are teaching by heart, dont read, tell the stories. It is not dangerous if you forget a lot... they will never know about that, they will never critizise your lessons! Enjoy the lesson time, show ypur aprisitation to them. Quote
