bmy- Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 The goal of science is to better understand the world around us and use that knowledge to our advantage. I don't know of any scientists that seek to prove or disprove God (Dawkins included). Dawkins himself would probably tell you that there is no way to disprove the existence of God, but there are also millions of myths that there are no way to disprove. You're right. I probably should have said to discover God is the inevitable goal. You can't disprove the invisible green dragon that lives in my garage. [On a side note.. I hate the 'disprove' game. It drives me up the wall. I'm glad people here understand it's not a valid argument] Quote
fiona84 Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 (edited) If the slogan is trying to make people feel better, it should REALLY say: "There IS a God who loves you. Now stop worrying and enjoy His blessings." I get what those humanists were saying and think there's a lesson there. In that article it talks about people trying to scare you into salvation (think those sandwhich board people walking around with the sign "Repent now, the end is nigh", etc). So maybe a nice message just affirming that you are not alone and God IS there would help. Having been in London it can feel so worldy and its probably easy for an apethetic to get on the bus every morning and not take much thought for the Creator. Edited November 2, 2008 by fiona84 Quote
Elgama Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 (edited) And isn't giving money to underprivileged people also more important than those LDS commercials I've seen on TV?I'm not trying to start an argument, but it gets on my nerves when everyone gets outraged and up in arms about anyone promoting atheism, but no one cares about other religious viewpoints being promoted or advertised or actively seeking new members. The church does give money underprivileged people/ In the UK underprivileged people get money, from the government, and we don't get that many commercials one every few months. And actually I agree it was much better when we had no religious advertising in the UK it was not allowed for a good portion of my life.We live in a free society and atheists have as much right to advertise as anyone else. We have lost enough people fighting to that right not to hold it as important. If atheists have that right so do I which is why Joseph Smith we should fight for everyman to be able to worship according to the dictates of their own religion - because if they can so can we.-Charley Edited November 2, 2008 by Elgama Quote
Moksha Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 If atheists could purchase side of the bus advertising in London, I assume the LDS Church could also buy such advertising. Perhaps with two fresh faced Elders with white short sleeve shirts, ties and bicycle helmets, together with some catchy slogan. Quote

Guest HEthePrimate Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 It's the ultimate and inevitable goal of science.. to prove that God does or does not exist. He's a scientist.. so of course that's his holy grail.Dude, my dad's a scientist--and a temple worker. Many scientists I've known believe in God (indeed, many are LDS), but I haven't met one yet who claims to be able to either prove or disprove the existence of God. We simply don't have enough evidence to be able to do so. Fortunately that's ok, because we can learn by revelation that God exists. It's not quantifiable, so we can't prove it to others, but we can encourage them to seek their own revelation.HEP Quote
