pam Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I think the important thing is, more than the spelling and the grammatical errors, is that we are mindful and respectful of all posts made. There is much to be learned here if we can get past all of that. Quote
john doe Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I'll admit that when I see thread titles with obvious misspellings, I will sometimes go in and fix them. There's one now that I'm resisting the urge, or maybe I'll go do it later tonight if the thread is still going. Quote

There's one now that I'm resisting the urge, or maybe I'll go do it later tonight if the thread is still going. Yes please; DO give in to the urge! LOL There are a couple of thread titles with misspellings. It is not so obvious when the misspelled word is in the midst of a post, but it is glaringly obvious in a thread title... Quote
ADoyle90815 Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Once, on another board, there was a thread title that should have said "It's official" but "official" was misspelled so badly that I made a snarky comment saying that I thought it was a thread about "The Office." After I did that, the thread title was corrected with "Not The Office" added. I have to admit that growing up with an English teacher for a mother has had made me into a bit of a grammar freak. Quote
Wingnut Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Haha! So how do you spell "cojnfess"?I TOTALLY didn't catch that, but I'm glad someone else did. Too funny.Yes please; DO give in to the urge! LOL There are a couple of thread titles with misspellings. It is not so obvious when the misspelled word is in the midst of a post, but it is glaringly obvious in a thread title...Yeah, I'm with you and JD on this. Spelling errors in thread titles are the worst (unless they're deliberate, but even then...) Quote
Wingnut Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 One that really bugs me (other than homonyms) is the misuse of the word "yeah." "Yeah" is the slang form of "yes." It is not a cheer. If you want to cheer, please use "yay!" (I'm okay now that I got that out of my system.) Quote

Every site I visit has a number of people who misspell the word. That's just so wrong.Elphaba Quote

I have a friend who does that on her blog all the time.Actually, that same friend once was writing a post about blown glass, and her obsession with it (she took some glass blowing classes after high school and fell in love with it). Instead of saying that she was "fascinated" by it, she wrote that she was "vaccinated" by blown glass. Quote

applepansy Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I have spell checker on my office PC.....not my laptop....I am sure my spelling is much worse at home..While working as a secretary (years ago) for a local Engineering firm who was presenting a proposal for the installation of a sewer system in a small community, I typed just about everything to do with it. I proof read, used spell check. The documents were read by two engineers, more than once. Somehow a bad word slipped in (use your imagination) and it was spelled correctly and was gramatically correct too, even if it did change the meaning of the sentence.I still laugh about it years later. Fortunately the city fathers were farming foke and thought it was funny too.applepansy Quote
pam Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Reminds me of some of the things we learned as kids. When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking. I before E except after C. Quote
applepansy Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I used to be an editor too, and I was a barracuda when it came to finding mistakes in the copy.I was so bad I was obnoxious. One time I was visiting a friend who had just written a computer program. When he showed me the printout, all of the errors just popped out at me.So I took out my red pen, which I always kept by my side, and started correcting them.He was not amused.ElphabaI have to stop myself from red lining errors in the books I read. LOL It really upsets me when its a hardback book.applepansy:huh: Quote

pam Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 During a segment this weekend, Fox News ’ Brett Baier said that “the high price of gas may be costing your kids some of their education. We’ll explain here.” At the same time, though, the word education was misspelled on-screen as “eductaion.” Saw that recently on something I was reading. Quote
john doe Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 If you watch KSL-TV news, on the weekends the things typed on the screen as part of the story tags are awful. Misspellings, incorrect usage, etc. Quote

Maureen Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking. That one's great! When my kids were going to elementary school it was: The second vowel makes the first vowel say its name. I like yours better. :) Quote
Truegrits Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 "Yeah" is the slang form of "yes." Hey, Wing...I get so tired of the over use of slang by the younger generations, and as someone stated earlier, there are children growing up that have no idea of the proper use or spelling of many many words. The children in my family know better than to reply "yeah" to me; their affirmative reply had better have the "snake sound" at the end.AND all "my" kids know the difference between "can I" and "may I"...
