Guest tomk Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 I cant seem to pray out loud blessing food or opening prayer its funny how it happens I feel like a blocked feeling like my mind wont release the thoughts, LOL I can say a prayer to myself and it sounds great but if i could only say it out loud, so why is this ? I don't know why you are experiencing this. But I think I can safely say the root of it is love and a desire for you to progress and grow. Everything God gives us, both challenges as well as blessings, are given for a reason - are given to help us grow.Have you gone to the Lord about loosing your tongue so that you can bless the food or give other public prayers? What has He said about the matter? The Lord does not need our prayers to become informed of what is going on in our lives. The purpose of prayer is align our will with God's will. What we are willing to share with Him about our struggles and weaknesses is a manifestation of our faith. As our faith in Him grows, so does both our honesty about our struggles and our willingness to seek and follow His will. Many people want to "appear righteous" to the Lord when they pray. They feel the need to "clean themselves up first" before they pray. But the Lord receiveth none such from our lips. He desires for us to come as we are. To come to Him in our filthy rags and plead for mercy.Prayer is about increasing that feeling of family. We are family. God is our Father. Christ is our Brother.I hope something I've said helps. :)Tom Quote
skippy740 Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Don't worry. Even the Prophet Joseph Smith didn't pray vocally until He prayed in the Sacred Grove for guidance. (Joseph Smith History 1:14) Quote

I think only you have the answer to that.Perhaps it is how you are thinking about it. Challenge some of your thoughts and practice. You really think God cares if your prayers are imperfect? Goodness. He will smile and lead you by the hand. Talk to Him. That is what prayer is all about. Just talk to him like you would your friend or your father. Quote
Iggy Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 jolee I am like you. I hate to say prayers in Church. I know why though. It is because I am afraid of being judged by the members. When I am asked in front of people, with no graceful way of refusing, I bite the bullet, take a real deep breath, and toss up a quick silent prayer for God to humble me and allow Him to speak through my mouth. I then push through the brick wall and shove embarrassment and pride into the corner and start with: "Father, thank you - - -" Quote
jolee65 Posted December 10, 2008 Author Report Posted December 10, 2008 I dont have a problem talking to Him in a personal way privately, and I do see this as a block to my growth im not comfortable reading aloud in a group only at home reading scripture with my family, I would never give a talk but the only thing I see myself doing is teaching Sunday school to the kids I have thought about learning to play the piano so I could play during church. I have other desires that would be considered forms of growth, but have yet to do anything about it. Quote
pam Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Jolee there are many people who are not comfortable with getting up in front of a group and that's okay. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and that's okay too. Quote
Hemidakota Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 If it is a self-esteem issue, then you need to start with small vocal prayers at home until you can build enough confidence in yourself before others. Then perhaps a invocation prayer in a small meeting among friends. You need to research here on this forum on HOW TO PRAY. There are many excellence writeups and reference links to aid you. Jolee, we are here to help and support you in anyway. Quote

LolaBella Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 jolee I am so glad u said that! I have always found it difficult to pray out loud, even when I am on my own!!! I tend to just say prayers to myself, in my head, and I dont kneel or anything. I just talk to God as and when I feel i need to. In the grocery store, walking round the park with my girls. I cant remember the last time i knelt down specifically to say a prayer-because every time I do, I literally cant get the word out, they wont come! I have always been like this lol Quote
