I have had callings extended to me that I wasn't initially comfortable accepting. I always take time to pray about it to get my own confirmation. I have gotten that confirmation every time and things have worked out well. I don't think it's a put down to the Bishopric that I want personal confirmation. I don't think God wants us to blindly follow anyone; that's why He provides us with that confirmation.

To pepsidriver, you do know the Bishop gets the receipts and therefore knows how much food you have gotten. If your RS President goes to the Bishop's Storehouse the Bishop has to sign off on the amounts before she even goes. Maybe he isn't looking as closely at the receipts as he should be but he is supposed to know how much you've gotten.

I made the mistake of not paying attention to that only one time....when I got the receipt....wow......after that I paid attention. I always told the RS Pres not to get confrontational when filling out an order. I would get the order before it went to the Storehouse and make the adjustments I felt needed to be made.

If I recall correctly even after order is filled the bishop's storehouse sends the Bishop a copy of what was filled. That way Bishop can confirm order was filled as he signed off on it and was not amended.

When I was serving as Elders Quorum President, I had a member of the quorum with a serious alcohol addiction. Spent many hours working this brother without success. One Sunday (we were expecting a change in the bishopric counselors) when to my surprise, his name was put forth as 2nd counselor in the Bishopric. For a very brief moment I thought some huge mistake was made. But then I remembered several things. My Bishop knew the circumstances, my stake president knew the circumstances, but most importantly I remembered that I had already sustained them both in their callings. My mind was made clear and I had no trouble raising my hand to sustain the Lord's decision.

I do remember my Mother in Law saying if we didn't call people with Word of Wisdom and other problems sometimes the church could not run.

One thing I will never forget is when my Fibromylagia was very bad, I was as far away from church and doing anything with my relationship with the Lord as I had ever been, I felt I was committing great sins etc then I got a blessing that said the Lord was proud of me I was doing the very best I could with the trials he had given me, and that He and I could expect no more of me.

We don't know who of the people we think are unrighteous, are actually as righteous as they are capable of being, which is more than some people with a recommend, or doing FHE or reading their scriptures everyday are, I guess its like the Widows Mite or the Parable of the Talents, unto much is given much is expected.

When we moved to the area we now live in there was a man serving in the Bishopric as the second councilor and he had a word of wisdom problem. We both left for work about the same time each morning. I would often run into him at 7-11. I was always walking in and he was usually on his way out with his morning cup of coffee. He would try to hide it from me, but I could smell it and knew what it was. I never told anyone about this and always sustained him in his calling. A few laters when they were released over a short amount of time this man stopped coming and moved away and never did go back to church.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always work the way it's supposed to. Sometimes the bishop isn't available to sign off on an order, but it needs to be sent in due to time sensitivity. I personally know of cases where the bishop's signature on food orders has been signed by the ward clerk or the RS President. Both of the people I know who have done this have told the bishop at the first available opportunity. The ward clerk I know never did it with checks.

I am one that has had to have food orders a few times. In each case the Bishop has signed the food order, the RS President sat down with me to determine how much of each item and I've taken the order myself to the food bank to pick up everything. The Bishop was never aware before I picked up the order how much I was getting. Each time the RS President would try and talk me into getting more than what I was asking for. Just never felt a need to ask for more than what I thought my family needed.
