angela Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Okay, I am looking for a way to filter out all the "bad" sites and pics on the web. I know there are programs out there. Can someone recommend one? Thanks! Quote
LittleWyvern Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 The best I've heard of (that's free) is OpenDNS. It's a little hard to set up, but it offers some very powerful and secure filtering features. Quote
MorningStar Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I would like to know how to get Google to set my search preferences permanently. I keep setting it to strict search and it keeps lowering it to moderate safe search. Quote

Dr T Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 My sister in law uses Bee Safe I think it's called. She really likes it. Quote
Dr T Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Maybe it's B safe or BE safe or something like that. It blocks everything! at least on her computer even innocent stuff imo Quote
ruthiechan Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 The best filter out there is to have your kid use the computer in the living room, or some other high traffic area, so that anyone walking by will know what they're up to. Quote
tubaloth Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I use k-9 filter K9 Web Protection - Free Internet Filtering and Parental Controls SoftwareWorks really well. You password protect it. There a million options on what you want to allow and what you don't. Quote

pam Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 We just bought a new program recommended by the court system. It's called Webroot Parental Controls. Parents input key words. If someone tries to access a site with that key word..the program takes a snapshot of it and a very loud audible sound is heard. I will be installing it tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. Quote
Fiannan Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 None of these work if your kid goes to the library, looks up the Finnish, Russian, or Italian words for sexual terms and does a search for them in that language. My suggestion is to get one of the programs that takes a snapshot of whatever is on the screen every 30 seconds. You can then review the files every several days or so to see what and when popped up. And if someone finds it, and then erases the pics, you will see the flow of pics interrupted by blank pages. Quote
tanuvasamama Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 My kids are still pretty young and don't need the computer for homework just yet, so the only time they are one is to play games. I downloaded kidzui. It's a browser just for kids, much like internet explorer or firefox. But the kids can only play kid games, watch kid friendly you tube (the funny stuff). They can make friends, but I've told my kids if they aren't your friend in real life, they aren't your friends online. Here's a description from the site "Over a million kid-friendly games, websites, pictures, and YouTube videos reviewed by parents like you" They can play and I don't have to worry that they may accidentally come across anything they shouldn't. If your kids enjoy things like clubpenguin they can even play that using kidzui. If kidzui allows in a site that even though it's approved, you don't like it, you can block it. It's worth a look and it's a free download. Quote
gabelpa Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 Here's the problem with filtering the Internet, It is in essence giving someone a sieve, sticking them in front of a tidal wave, and telling them to filter out all the foamy bits. I work in IT, and the best filter by far is parental intervention and attention. Also, time restrictions, personal logins, and a few other measures. Kidzui is cool if that's the route toy want to go.
