which time, the time he was killed or the several times before? The 1800's were a harsh time for justice, rarely was it seen to... much like today I guess but without recourse to due procedure, and less constitutional amendments protecting the general citizenry.

Yes...he was in jail....several times.....and the gov't turned its back on people of my faith and possible relatives....they were burned out of their homes.....women were raped and children were killed and there were cold blooded murders and people were tarred and feathered and there was a group of people in a part of missouri that did nothing but mind their own buisness and they were attacked by 200 or so men....all the males including male children were killed. I forgot the gov't did help....they signed an extermination order.....

curious as to why you asked if he was in jail????

I knew he was murdered at Carthage, jail, but didn't know why he was put in jail. I just wanted to get it "straight from the horses mouth" so to speak.

Actually, I don't know yet. I didn't look at the link Pam gave me, like I said, from the horses mouth, I could read on the internet for the rest of my life about the Mormon Church and probably never cover it all. I came here so I could ask people and get an answer from a real person.

If you had gone to the link I gave you it gave the reason Joseph Smith was arrested.

Here is the first paragraph to the link I gave you.

In 1844, William Law, a disaffected Mormon, published a paper full of slander aimed at the Prophet Joseph Smith, even calling for Smith to be arrested and hung. The Nauvoo city council authorized the destruction of the printing press. Non-Mormon neighbors were incensed and a riot followed. Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith and others were arrested for inciting the riot. The governor promised the men that if they submitted to the arrest and went to jail in carthage, he would protect them. The men agreed to go to jail and undergo a trial. While in Carthage, Joseph was threatened numerous times.

The charges were for riot (for the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor) and treason (for declaring martial law in Nauvoo during the uproar that ensued in the surrounding countryside following the Expositor incident). Believe it or not, Wikipedia's coverage on the topic is pretty decent.

and a mob killed them in the jail....once again....the gov't did nothing....

There's pretty decent evidence that Governor Ford explicitly green-lit the murder beforehand. We have at least one person claiming Ford promised not to intervene until the deed was done, and Ford's action in disbanding the Warsaw militia there in Carthage (as opposed to marching them back to Warsaw and then having them disband) was incredibly naive.

That'd be interesting to see what the decent evidence was. I've read about the mob and also a lack of investigation, but not that.

Sharp of the Warsaw signal was Anti Mormon.....he became that way because of several things....he wrote and printed in his paper half truths and lies about the Saints. After the death of Joseph and Hyrum everyone thought his writings would stop. They did for a short time, which eventually played a role in the Saints leaving Nauvoo sooner than planned.

So many factors led to the murder of the Prophet at Carthage ... Joseph knew going into the work that it wasn't going to be easy and he asked the Lord over and over how long he would live. His work was done, he was very calm on his final trip and he was called home, in the process he sealed his testimony with his blood ... a very powerful statement for anyone. His blood also sealed the fate of those who fought against him. A book called "The Fate of the Persecutors of the Prophet" details what happened to these people. Pretty gruesome stuff. The Lord used the actions of these men to bring His prophet home but he didn't allow them to escape. Brother Joseph is #1 on my list to meet after the savior.

He had the choice that day prior to going to Liberty Jail. He choosed the latter. Reminds me of the Lord in the Garden, seeking another path but brought back to reality.

Why wait for the next life...ask to talk to him now. :)

Indeed! Faith. Purpose.

I will be visiting the Carthage Jail again this summer, and will see the Liberty Jail for the first time ever in the same trip. Also will see Winter Quarters for the first time. :D :D

Can I come with? Pale is supposed to take me Carthage, but he keeps avoiding the issue! :P

Seriously, I want to go there sometime in my lifetime, but have to admit, that would be a very difficult place to see, and not feel, I don't know, distraught, I think.

Winter Quarters would be fascinating.

Let me know what time I can expect you to pick me up! :P
