Daughter_of_Helaman2709 Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Hi, all! Yesterday, I was offered a new calling, which I accepted. I will be teaching a Primary class! Now, the reason that this is such a stretch for me is that when I was younger, it was very difficult to relate to children my age (I've always been very serious!) and as far as relating to kids now... well, it's still really difficult. However, I know some things that comfort me: I know that callings are foreordained and that Heavenly Father has a plan for me. I know that, judging from my past calling, I will eventually feel comfortable in this capacity as well. Also, something's gotta help prepare me for motherhood, right??? hahaha... I'm very honored to have received this calling, and I think a lot of my trepidation comes from the fact that it's a much bigger responsibility than the one I had previously... Time will tell! Blessings, Kate Quote
Hemidakota Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Either the calling needs us or we need the calling...I would love to be back in the Primary teaching. Congrats. Quote

applepansy Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 When my youngest was about 2 years old I was called as Assistant Camp Director for the Young Women. I don't camp. I detest camping. Its a lot of work to just get dirty and creates more work cleaning up after you get home. At the time of the calling I had just had bi-lateral carpal tunnel surgery and I'd was still struggling with a new diagnosis of chronic pain. I accepted. I went to camp with the girls two years. I kept wondering why I was there. I wondered if I was there to touch one of the girls. I was over first aid both years and the first year we had an anorexic girl who we had to keep a close eye on. But other than bumps and scrapes I really didn't contribute much. I did learn a lot though. 3 years later we sold our house and moved. We rented for a year, then the house was sold and we had to move. The small rural valley we moved to had very little available for rent and we were building a house. We moved out of the house that sold into a camp ground not far from our property. We CAMPED for SEVEN weeks! Yes I said SEVEN! With four kids! We were able to get on a waiting list and rent a condo by the ski resort in time for school to start. What I learned at Girls Camp helped me take care of my family while we camped for an entire summer. I'll always be grateful to my Heavenly Father for giving me the opportunity I needed to learn how to take care of my family. applepansy Quote

Every week a student or former student greets me with something new. A few weeks ago a former student (a somewhat difficult personality) came and sat by me. He looked up at me with rather sad eyes and said, “No one likes me today – can I sit by you?” If the truth be known – when I was his age no one liked me very much ether, except for one very unusual primary teacher. The Traveler Quote
Truegrits Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I just love those sweet little spirits. Except for a year in YW, I have been in Primary/Nursery for the past ten years. I especially like the ages of 5>10, but they are all precious. I learn from them, as well as teach them! Good luck, Kate...I'm sure you will do fine. Quote
Churchmouse Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 When I was serving in a Branch Presidency years ago, I heard a woman tell another member "I'm just a Primary teacher". I wondered how anyone could use the words "just" and "Primary teacher" in the same sentence. My first calling as a new convert was teaching Primary. What an experience. I'm sure I learned more than the students. "Teacher, No Greater Call". Quote
Daughter_of_Helaman2709 Posted April 20, 2009 Author Report Posted April 20, 2009 I will be teaching the D&C/Church History class to the 8-11 year-olds! I'm really excited! Thanks for all the helpful replies! Quote

When I was a child, I also had great difficulty relating to other children, and actually got along better with grownups. Even today, though I really love children, I don't know quite what to say to them, how to play with them, etc., until they reach a certain age and can carry on the type of conversation I am used to. Thankfully, however, that seems to be changing a bit--I've been feeling more comfortable with kids recently and better able to talk with them. Had a great time at dinner yesterday after church with some friends and their kids! :)Don't worry--I'm sure you'll do great!HEP Quote

Influencing the children of the church can be fruitful years down the road when they lead the church. Quote
