Elphaba Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 Pollster.com has a new chart, titled: National Party Affiliation, that demonstrates how party affiliations are shifting. According to the poll, 36 percent self-identify as Democrat, 26 percent as Republican, and 33 percent as Independent. We discussed this on another thread, but I think it is yet another indication we are all starting to reject rigid political platforms.I tried to post the chart, but it wouldn't let me. It's worth taking a look at.Elphaba Quote
a-train Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 I don't think it is a sign of any rejection of rigid ideology, but of the Republican Party and its lies. -a-train Quote
prisonchaplain Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 What Elpha says makes sense. There is so much verbage about postmodernism, with it's spreading influence. A breaking down of confident ideology would be natural in such a worldview. Liberalism has become the new pragmatism, at least for the next few years. What conservatism in general, and the GOP in particular, will turn into remains to be seen. As for the pot-shot about Republican lies, dishonesty is not a Republican ideological trait, but rather one of people in power trying to retain what they have. Quote
Kawazu Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 Howdy, Political platforms do no matter. Generally, politicians do not vocalize or adhere to any specific philosophy of government. "I promise to do what's best for America," suffices, usually. The letter next to a candidate's name is more aptly described as an indicator of the flavor of rhetoric employed during reelection season. Moreover, party platforms are not legally binding. If, for example, a President violates one of the key planks mid-term, nothing can be done. Any who, I am glad to see a sizable number of people identifying themselves as independents. The best the two-party system has to offer is not good enough for the American people. Best regards, Kawazu Quote
Moksha Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 I don't think it is a sign of any rejection of rigid ideology, but of the Republican Party and its lies.-a-train There have always been less Republicans, but the independent category has really grown. This is the group that requires the most compelling sound bites. Quote
