NSBooklady Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 Hi to everyone from beautiful downtown ....make that the outskirts ...of Halifax, capital city of Nova Scotia. I am a 60 year old retiree (last fall) after 27 years as a librarian for the regional school for deaf and blind students. I live with my son who is 34. I have been reading many of the introductions and I feel comfortable introducing myself because everyone here seems to friendly and non-judgmental. I was a convert back in '96 but I left not for reasons of beliefs but because I never felt like I fit in. I was always the square peg in the round hole. I ended up going back around the time that my son, who is mentally and physically challenged. moved home from 5 years living in a group home. When the RS President said "Why in heaven's name are you doing that?", I knew I had a problem again so I walked away again and haven't been a member for around 6 years now. Through it all, my faith in Heavenly Father has waivered but He had never given up on me and some of my church friends have been very compassionate and understanding to the point of bringing us meals when Kevin (my son) was going through chemo 5 years ago and sending the elders over for a blessing again just 5 weeks ago because it looks like the cancer may be back. I felt a sense of peace about my son's health that I have not felt since this all started to happen. A few days later, I heard from the oncologist that some further tests would be scheduled and that he had his doubts as to whether the tumor was malignant since the tumor markers were not elevated in the two blood tests that were done. We are not out of hot water yet but we're making progress and I feel Heavenly Father's presence in my life It's difficult for me to take additional steps because it's not easy to get to church with my son's health issues and, when we do, he tends to get stared at like he has two heads which really upsets him but my heart is with the church and I really feel the need to do SOMETHING so I thought I would join here and talk to people and perhaps learn from their experiences. God bless.... Donna Quote

NSBooklady Posted July 1, 2009 Author Report Posted July 1, 2009 Welcome. Perhaps you can be the starter of a a support group for other parents on the site that take care of and have handicapped or disabled children.Wow ........that would be cool. It certainly has it's particular challenges beyond that that any parent faces and it's something that SOME wards need help with. How would I go about doing that?Donna Quote

TRomans Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Were you military? Greenwood was the big military base for years.DonnaMy dad is, there is still a base there and it is still big-the town is growing so I hear. It was a great place when I was young, but now a lot of my friends there have gotten into the bad stuff. So I am very thankful I moved on to bigger and better places :). Then again St Mary's was my 2nd choice for uni. Tyler Quote

Then just start a thread under general discussion announcing you have set up this group and invite people to join you. Let me know if you need any further assistance. I'd be glad to help you. Quote
Moksha Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 It is really good to have folks with the wisdom of years on this board. Pam does not have to feel so alone. Quote
