hordak Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 When i was a kid we used to sell a product (food, candy etc) or a service (car wash, yard work etc) to raise funds for (school, sports, scouts etc). Now kids come to my door "selling discounts" to other places that want my money. Anyone else notice this growing trend? Is it really working? At Girl Scout cookie time i empty my wallet but a coupon offering 10% off a pizza just lacks the appeal. Quote
dazed-and-confused Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 Whoa...ok...haven't had to deal with yet, but i have to agree with your assessment.....that would be a hard sell. Then again, the pitch was REALLY, "hey, i'm a kid tryingto raise money for____________, will you buy this candy, or whatever"? We did just that, even though we didn't really want it. Guees no matter the item for sale, it's still the same old pitch. Coupons.....yeah....HARD sell.......lol Quote
pam Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 I love those coupons that the kids are selling. Many of them are 50% off to places like Pizza Hut etc. For awhile I had one from Pizza Hut for every large pizza I got another large for free. If they are places I frequent often and the coupon is good for a year (which all have been so far) the money is well worth spent. So far I haven't spent more than $10 for one. When I got the buy one get one free pizza one..I got my money back the first time I used it. Quote
BenRaines Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 I agree Pam. I have always saved lots of money using those coupons. I like the Entertainment book too. Ben Raines Quote

pam Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Wait..are you trying to butter me up so I'll buy you one of those coupons? Quote
Generally_Me Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 I prefer buying coupons to buying raffle tickets. I get some sort of a return for the coupons, usually. If I remember I have them I went to a bakesale recently, and they were charging $10 for a loaf of banana bread Quote
pam Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 I went to a bakesale recently, and they were charging $10 for a loaf of banana bread I just can't make myself spend that much on a loaf of bread even if for a fundraiser. Quote
Generally_Me Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Neither could I...I bought some overpriced rice krispies and escaped :/ Too bad...I like banana bread... Quote
Jbs2763 Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 boy scout popcorn is liek $15 a box now.... Quote
john doe Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 (edited) What I can't stand is the local grade school is almost constantly doing fundraisers. It seems that they come out every month or so with another one. If my tax dollars don't pay enough to support the school, then either cut something out or raise my taxes. Don't make me pay double for cookie dough just send me a bill. Edited August 7, 2009 by john doe spell check is broken today Quote
pam Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 The one thing that I do find annoying about all the school fundraisers is that they all seem to be done at the same time. At the beginning of the school year. Not only do you have PTA fundraisers, you've got football teams, cheerleading squads, band drill team, every little club that needs funds. You just get bombarded with fundraisers. Quote
Wingnut Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 My mom never let me do school fundraisers as a kid. I was in Girl Scouts (for 13 years), so I sold cookies and calendars (later it was cookies and nuts) at scattered times of the year, and she didn't want me bombarding friends, family, and neighbors with still more fundraisers.I think I'd rather have the coupons to places I already go, rather than buy candy bars I don't need or wrapping paper I don't like. The girls' softball team at the high school here sells (for $10) a card (sized like a credit card) with coupon deals all over the front and back for discounts at local businesses. There are probably 30 businesses that participate. The cards are sold in August/September and expire at the end of March. I thought that was a great idea. Quote
hordak Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 I stand corrected. Apparently some people like the coupons (must have something to do with surviving the great depression:p:D). Quote
miztrniceguy Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 i just checked my wallet. one i paid $10 for last year is expired. i only used 2 things an oil change, and $10 off at a deli....the rest went unused. Quote
Jbs2763 Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 the local schools here have those cards, dunno what they charge for them but the "coupon" on it, (unlimited) that i see regular is 2 bucks off a pizza.. Quote
Wingnut Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 I think we only ended up using it for pizza (once), Baskin-Robbins, and dry cleaning. We used it for dry cleaning several times. Quote
beefche Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 If they have something I don't want, I will give money to them and not take the product. I did that once to some kids that came to my door selling candy. I didn't want to pay $5.00 for a candy bar, so I gave them $2.00. Poor kids looked at me and asked "But, this won't get you anything. Don't you want candy?" Quote
