Traveler Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 What is the Gospel, if you had to explain it in a brief paragraph? G-d's plan of salvation - also known as the plan of happiness or the path to freedom and enlightenment. The Traveler Quote
NeuroTypical Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 The word "Gospel" comes from "Good News". The good news, is that there is a God, and not only is He all powerful/knowing/etc, but He is also a good guy who loves us and wants what is best for us. (Much better news than some of the harsher belief systems about angry and punishing deities, for example). The Gospel is basically - God is good, He dwells in heaven, which is a good place, and we can rid ourselves of all the sin and nonsense we accumulate that keeps us from Him and return to Him, by following the path that God's only begotten son, Jesus Christ, opened up for us. Those are the highest of the high points of the Gospel. How it all works is also the gospel. It is indeed Good News. LM Quote
Justice Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Gotta love the Book of Mormon for clarity. The resurrected Lord appeared to the Nephites and told them:3 Nephi 11: 32 And this is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me; and I bear record of the Father, and the Father beareth record of me, and the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me. 33 And whoso believeth in me, and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God. 34 And whoso believeth not in me, and is not baptized, shall be damned. 35 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and I bear record of it from the Father; and whoso believeth in me believeth in the Father also; and unto him will the Father bear record of me, for he will visit him with fire and with the Holy Ghost.Gospel means "good news" and is specifically speaking of the good news of a Redeemer or Savior. If we believe Jesus Christ is that Redeemer or Savior, we will obey Him. john doe Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 I like the testimony of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon in D&C 76: 19 And while we meditated upon these things, the Lord touched the eyes of our understandings and they were opened, and the glory of the Lord shone round about. 20 And we beheld the glory of the Son, on the right hand of the Father, and received of his fulness; 21 And saw the holy angels, and them who are sanctified before his throne, worshiping God, and the Lamb, who worship him forever and ever. 22 And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives! 23 For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father— 24 That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God. Avrham Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 The "good news"or the "great news" is God reign is supreme and I have to pay more attention to the "news" reader ] Quote
RipplecutBuddha Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 The Gospel is the good news that Jesus suffered for our sins, was crucified, died, and was resurrected. In doing this, He has overcome the two obstacles that would have otherwise forever prevented us from returning to God's presence. Death did not befall us by our choice, so immortality is a gift free to all of God's children. However, our sins do befall us by our choice, so it must by by our choice that we turn away from them and seek to follow Jesus and the principles, doctrines, and ordinances that He has given us in order to recieve forgiveness of our sins and become worthy to return to God's presence at the last day. The good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is that all of this is possible in the first place. Without the Gospel of Jesus Christ we are lost to God the Father forever. Quote
Misshalfway Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I agree with the explanations of the "Good news". This directs us to who we worship and why. I would also add that the gospel and the plan of salvation helps us have joy in this life too. It helps us learn and become and overcome the flesh. In this life, as we apply the gospel of repentance, Christ changes us as we learn and choose and then he opens the mysteries of the universe to us thru the Holy Spirit. It is a beautiful and amazing thing that we can be saved from our sins and inevitable death, but even better to know our potential because of Christ. It really does shape the way one lives when one knows where they are going. Quote
