pam Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Ellen DeGeneres joins judges' table on 'American Idol' - CNN.comI love Ellen and am excited to see her as a judge on AI. Quote
Captain_Curmudgeon Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 I love Ellen and have been a fan since back in the days that stand-up was all she did. But I don't want to see her as a judge on "American Idol." On the other hand, it's not a big deal to me since I never watch it. Quote
john doe Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 I'm still trying to figure out how Ellen is qualified to judge singing talent, but then again neither is that Kara chick. Maybe she can integrate some of her dancing choreography 'skills' into the show. Quote
FlyingPurpleMonkey Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 She is qualified as a "commoner" who will bring a "What would I buy? Would I buy this?" persepctive to the judges panel. And she is dang funny. I say... Great Call!! You go girl (even though you need to repent of the whole lesbian thing.)!! Quote
miztrniceguy Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 she was a guest judge on "so you think you can dance" for 1 week last season. i heard "sytycd" is courting paula abdul to join them Quote

I read that the gay lobby is searching for a gay idol...they thought Adam was it last season. lol Quote
Maxel Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 American Idol has never been so much about talent as it has been about popularity and political correctness (all while one of its biggest attractions is the cruelly judgmental Simon... anyone else see a paradox?).Case in point: (I believe it was) the second season, where Ruben Studdard (fat black dude) won over Clay Aiken (skinny white dude). It was heralded as a triumph of the underdog.Studdard's career flopped afterwards (because he just wasn't that good) but Aiken's soared (because he was that good).I also read a friend's story about how the American Idol auditions worked. It's more about how crazy/controversial you look (some people pass the initial auditions without singing just because they're dressed in crazy getups) and how well your 'aura' fits the American Idol look. This recent move seems to confirm that. What background does Elen DeGeneres have in vocal preformance? None, other than a fondness for music. It's a popularity contest; not a talent contest. Quote
john doe Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Kara is a singer/songwriter, And not a very good one on either count if you ask me. Simon is usually the one who has the best feel for what a performer's strengths and weaknesses are, nuch as people hated to hear it from him. Randy is a pretty good judge of what works as well. Kara is pure fluff, as I'm afraid Ellen will be as well. Quote
Bini Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Simon is a bit rough around the edges but I agree that he has a better feel for performer's strengths and weaknesses. DioGuardi can sing. I'll give her that. I'm not sure if she knows what she's talking about half of the time though. My husband about threw our TV out the window when she bowed before Adam Lambert and proclaimed him a "Rock God". As for Ellen, I've always liked her, she genuinely comes across as a caring person. You can't say that about a lot of celebrities. Quote
Elphaba Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 the cruelly judgmental Simon... anyone else see a paradox?).I have read that, after the Susan Boyle disaster, Cowel is more considerate of the contestants than he was before. (I've actually become a huge fan of Danyl Johnson, one of the contestants on the X-Factor. I am extremely embarrassed to admit that, but there you have it.)It was heralded as a triumph of the underdog.I never heard it called that. To the best of my recollection, it was pretty much a tie as to who would win. Perhaps that's what my friends said, so I'm not aware of anyone else saying it.A group called "The Underdogs" did produce Studdard's first single. Could you be confusing that with his "underdoggedness"? Studdard's career flopped afterwards (because he just wasn't that good) but Aiken's soared (because he was that good).I looked Studdard up on Wiki to reply to your post, and was shocked to see he actually had a very good career in the R&B and gospel catagories. I didn't know about that.Elphaba Quote
Moksha Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Ellen will add both a more sympathetic touch as well as wit and humor. Good to add counterbalance to Simon Cowell's contributions. Quote
bytor2112 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 she was funnier before she was gay:rolleyes: Quote
bytebear Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 well, her sitcom was, anyway. I thought some of her award hosting stints were genius. Quote
mightynancy Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Ruben Studdard's career has been awesome! Maybe we differ on the definition of "flop." I adore Ellen! She's going to be a great addition to the show. She has a softer persona than Simon, but she'll certainly zing him into his place from time to time. American Idol is a fun show...fairness isn't part of the package. Do y'all expect it to be more real than any other reality show? Get real, dawg. Quote
Maxel Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Wow- I was unaware Ruben Studdard had a successful career. The last thing I heard about it (which was about 6 months after he had won American Idol) was that he'd gotten much fewer record deals than Aiken- despite the automatic record deal that comes with winning Idol. Thanks for correcting me, guys.My main problem with Idol is that it's always been about personas first and talent second. It has to be- there are far too many talented people in America for the judges to possibly watch. Ultimately, it's about what will simultaneously get ratings and keep fans interested- which is one reason I think Simon has been so cruel in many of the judgings. He's a main attraction (or was in the beginning). Quote
Carl62 Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Wow- I was unaware Ruben Studdard had a successful career. With the exception of Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry, I wasn't aware that ANY of them really had successful careers. I'm into music as a living and I still couldn't name you one Clay Aiken song to save my life. Quote

She took the backseat for awhile but she's probably just as popular, if not more so, than Kelly Clarkson now. Quote
mightynancy Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I'm so out of the loop. What's Fantasia up to? I loved her! Quote
